HOW TO CHOOSE LIGHTING FIXTURE FOR HOUSE Lost in the dark? Need to choose the right light fixtures for your home? Any person who has embarked on a house renovation or construction project knows about the wide array of aspects one needs to look into. Each aspect affects the entire project in some way, and so careful planning is required from anyone thinking of undergoing such a project, regardless of scale. Some aspects of renovation or construction are easy to decide on, while others cannot be undertaken as easily. Choosing lighting fixtures, for instance, is a rather complicated process and if you’re not too confident about handling this matter yourself, you should consult an interior designer or interior decorator who will give you a few tips in installing the right lighting fixtures. This is extremely challenging because lighting fixtures, unlike lampshades, are permanently wired and mounted, and as such can not be easily transferred. Often, too, screws or nails have to be drilled into walls or ceilings during the installation process, so their setup cannot be done whimsically. The positioning of every lighting fixture has to be carefully planned on paper. The fixtures you choose will generally fall under one or more of these four categories: decorative lighting, task lighting, protective and safety lighting, and general lighting. Fixtures also come in different types, such as chandeliers, pendants, spotlights, track lights, wall- or ceiling-mounted fluorescents, and cabinet or undercabinet lighting fixtures. Decorative lighting fixtures We often use decorative lighting for living spaces and corners to which we want to draw the visitor’s attention. You can use them to highlight special areas such as the fireplace mantel, a mural, or a pedestal with a valuable sculpture. Even drapes can be highlighted with decorative lighting to give the room a dramatic effect at night. Task lighting fixtures The purpose of these lights has more to do with utility rather than aesthetics. A popular fixture choice for task lighting are track lights. They’re great for the kitchen where you only need to turn on a few lights that focus on the particular area of the kitchen you’re working in. For instance, if all you need lit is the center island, then track lighting on this area would work well. Protective and safety lighting fixtures These are used to illuminate areas which may be hazardous to the residents when dark, such as stairwells. Since these fixtures are usually hidden from view, they are quite inexpensive and don’t need to have high wattage. General lighting fixtures These can be ceiling-mounted lights or chandeliers and are best used for bedrooms and bathrooms. In the bedroom, you can use general lighting and also have one or two lamps which can alternatively be used if you need less illumination. If you’re using incandescent or halogen bulbs for the bedroom, you can also purchase a dimmer switch to adjust the intensity of the light and alter the mood of the room. Ask the salespeople at VIP LIGHTING about which lighting fixtures are most economical, and whether they can be used for the lighting design you have in mind. Don’t be tempted to buy lighting fixtures that limit their illumination, such as wall fixtures with heavily tinted bowls or shades. In addition, go for the timeless styles as you’d want to avoid changing the fixtures from time to time. VIP LIGHTING SDN BHD +6 07 333 7339 Lighting consultant~ADDY
