  2. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1141106/1/.html SINGAPORE: Police arrested two men who are alleged to have provided false contact information to obtain loans from loan sharks. The suspects, aged 36 and 59, were caught separately on July 14. Police said the two cases were reported in June and July. The suspects are believed to be debtors who obtained loans from loan sharks by using their previous residential addresses. This caused the new residents to face the brunt of the loan shark harassment which were supposedly directed at them. The suspects are also being investigated for failing to report the change in their residential addresses under the National Registration Act. The offence carries a maximum fine of S$5,000 and a jail term of up to five years. - CNA/ck

  6. http://sg.news.yahoo.com/blogs/singaporescene/epidemic-corpses-singapore-074246013.html An epidemic of corpses in Singapore By Seah Chiang Nee In recent days, parts of this law-and-order city, whose murder rate ranks as low as Japan's, resembled scenes from the American TV series Crime Scene Investigation. Against its staid nature, seven gruesome bodies have been found in various parts of the island since July 1, unrelated to each other — at a rate of one a day. In fact, the grisly spate had begun earlier, from around mid-April when a decomposed body was found in a luggage bag at the casino resort of Sentosa. A month later, an Indonesian maid's body was discovered submerged in a rooftop tank that supplies drinking water to nearly 200 residents at Woodlands. Her Bangladeshi boyfriend had been arrested. Since then a total of 13 bodies have turned up, prompting shocked citizens to ask: "What has become of Singapore?" Police investigators and pathologists — as well as sociologists — are working overtime to probe this epidemic of corpses. Most were believed to be murder or suicide victims. Concern over two possible factors Until a clear picture emerges, people are blaming it on the rapid intake of foreigners, as well as the presence of two casinos, or possibly both. As a result, the second most densely-populated city in the world (next to Monaco) is now also poised to overtake Las *** as the second largest gaming destination as well. These two factors have pushed economic growth sky-high but few ordinary citizens are celebrating. Families are extremely concerned about the social impact they may bring — including crime, family stress and suicides. "In fact, they may already have started to take a toll on society," said a housewife. Several of the bodies had been found in surrounding waters or forested areas, a few having died or been killed some time ago. Among the grotesque finds was the lower half of a decomposed female body which was discovered floating in the Bedok Reservoir, a source of drinking water for many Singaporeans. So far, the phenomenon has not really dented Singapore's reputation as one of the world's safest cities, with an average of two murders a month. This works out to 0.5 homicide per 100,000 people, a proportion close to Japan's and slightly ahead of Hong Kong's. Relatively high suicide rate But suicides here are another matter. Despite its prosperity, the republic ranked 43rd in the world in 2009 with 401 cases; that was before the casinos opened their doors. At least half were non-Singaporeans, a few of them China mainlanders. In the latest case, a decomposed body was found near the National University of Singapore (NUS) on Wednesday. Two days earlier, a couple taking a stroll along the Singapore River were shocked to see the corpse of a Chinese woman floating below the Helix Bridge. Many Singaporeans are wondering if the 38,600-strong police force is adequate to cope with the population expansion — by 65 percent to five million since 1990. Long overcrowded, the city state has undergone a tremendous transformation in almost every field. Financially, people are generally richer, live better; most youths are better educated. But among the lower income earners, social problems and tales of poverty abound. Number of homeless people increasing As bodies were turning up, the state television reported that the Government was picking up the highest number of homeless individuals in the city in four years. A total of 339 homeless individuals and 15 homeless families (totalling 50 people) were found last year — compared with 217 individuals and 17 families (comprising 82 people) in 2009. Nearly one in every six households has more than US$1 million (RM3mil) in assets, making it the densest population of wealthy households in the world, according to the Boston Consulting Group. But despite the high GDP growth, the lot of the other half is gloomier. Widely-travelled business consultant Imran Ahmad likened it to "Singapore's long trip from Third World to First World and back to Third" in which serious crimes are getting more common. The city before 2004 was less crime-prone, Imran noted. He named some recent social ills: floating corpses in drinking water tanks, a flabby (family) man dressed in wet underwear at Singapore Zoo, a woman threatening a train official after refusing to pay her son's fare — and so on. Can changes still be made? "It is impossible to turn the clock back. Nor does one wish to return to the past. However, Singaporeans must be conscious of society's direction," he warned. Meanwhile, a Chinese-language tabloid reported that a man was arrested for attempting suicide at a flat — half an hour after another man had fallen to his death in the same block. The public is showing a mixture of bafflement, anger and worry about these social ills. "Floating bodies are found everywhere every other day," said a man who wished to be known as Swift Disaster. "Our crime rate used to be among the lowest, with incidents like these (ones) very rare. "Foreign workers (are now) robbing and killing each other and domestic maids, illegal prostitution is on the rise, our void decks are being terrorised, rubbish bins being scattered. "Our children no longer feel safe in the streets of our home. Our aspiration of becoming a First World standard in everything is taking a toll on our lives. "I hope it's still not too late for us to make changes where needed and bring back the beautiful Singaporean lifestyle. It (might not have been) perfect but it was beautiful." 7. Seem like SA still the same. Many yr back, I book a Tibet tour with them. In the end, their China tour counter part didn't show up at Tibet airport. We waited for 2 hrs. Luckily, one uncle from the tour has the Cheng Du day tour - tour guide HP #. Who help us to contact the Tibet tour company boss. The tibet tour boss told us, to go to the hotel ourselves. Then he will ask his local tour guide to pay us the taxi money. When the uncle ask for the taxi refund from the local tour guide, she kind of reluctant to pay back the money to the uncle and say boss never say. Uncle insist her to call her boss and ask. The boss never say sorry. U know what reason he give, car break down. U believe? When we do booking at SA Singapore office. The SA staff told us. If anything happen, DON't CALL SA. Call the local tour guide. As SA only sell the package. He say U call me, I also cannot do anything. SO.. call tour company from China. After which, 1st and last booking with SA.
  8. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1140266/1/.html 10 tourists file complaint against SA Tours with CASE SINGAPORE: A group of ten tourists have filed a complaint against SA Tours with consumer watchdog, CASE. They were bound for Shanghai on Sunday, but failed to board their flight after a representative from the tour agency did not show up at the airport to provide information on hotel and trip arrangements. The affected customers turned up at the CASE office on Monday morning at 10am, hoping to get a refund of S$800. Responding to Channel NewsAsia, SA Tours said the representative who was to meet the group is a third-party contractor who provides check-in services for tour agencies. SA Tours said he was not feeling well and had dozed off after taking some medicine. His handphone was also switched off, which caused the mix-up. According to CASE, SA Tours received eight complaints two years ago, and one last year - and the complaint from the Shanghai group would be its first this year. This is also the first complaint received by CASE over a cancelled holiday, due to an agency's representative failing to show up at the airport. Seah Seng Choon, Executive Director of CASE, said: "From what we've gathered so far, we believe there's a lack of service. The staff who is supposed to brief the consumers before the tour starts was absent on that morning. And the consumers were uncertain as to whether to proceed with the tour or not." -CNA/ac
  9. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1140066/1/.html SINGAPORE: A group of tourists were bound for Shanghai but found themselves at the travel agency. The group of ten tourists said they were expecting an agency staff to meet them at the airport, and provide information about their hotel and trip arrangements. However, no one showed up. One of the tourists, Charlotte Lee, said: "The whole team waited for him for about two hours. And then he miraculously picked up our call at around 10:10. His first response was, 'Why aren't you on the plane?' How can we get on the plane when we don't have any details at all? Like, are we going to be stranded in China? I think that was the biggest concern we had." They said they were told to board the plane at 11am and that trip details would be sent to them via SMS. But they decided not to, and came to the travel agency for answers. Police arrived at the scene shortly after noon and asked the group to move their bags away from the agency's front door. The agency then proposed an afternoon flight to Shanghai, which the group did not take up. Jonathan Tan, Manager of SA Tours, said: "We arranged for a staff to be at the airport to assist. He would not affect the trip at all, actually. Because our staff was not there to help, the group totally lost confidence in the company, and abandoned the tour by their own choice." After a five-hour wait outside the agency, the group left. The group said it is planning further action. -CNA/ac

  14. alot of ppl don't know had such thing and though so happy. got 30 yrs loan, 35 yrs loan. Wait until it reach 25-26th yrs then they will know. U go and ask around your friend, does anyone know what is their VL? Do they know if they take 30 yrs loan, by 26th yr , VL will be running out and need to pay cash.
  15. all goes towards principle. B'coz this is not mthly installment. Eg.. Outstanding loan is $200k Then Ur 4D open 1st, tio $50k. Then u use all $50k to pay your loan. Hence your outstanding loan will be $200k - $50 k = $150k Hence you either stay put on 30 yrs loan term, pay the lesses mthly installment OR U can choose pay the same mthly installment $ but shorter loan term.
  16. not stay. 30 mth is for those who OWN private property.
  17. Valuation Limit depend when you brought the HDB. I think the latest is 120%. Mean.. eg.. you bought the HDB @$400k. So VL is $480k. U only can use max $480k in ur CPF on that HDB. It include all expense.. like stamp fee, lawyer fee. Any $ that u use CPF to service that house. I think I read somewhere before, someone did a est calculation. By est 25-26 yrs.. VL run out liao.
  18. est by 25-26 yrs, your VL reach. U only can use hard cash to pay the HDB monthly installment. By 55 yrs old, if you still working. Good. If not, 1 hand.. u will be worry abt HDB installment, PUB bill, simi tong tong bill another hand,.. u will be worry abt kid education fund.

  20. ‘Fun Pack Song’ pulled from lineup for now. The organisers of this year's National Day Parade (NDP) are pulling the now-infamous "Fun Pack Song" from their performance lineup, while they seek modification rights for "Bad Romance". The controversial song, created to introduce the items inside the annual NDP Fun Pack, carried lyrics written by Haresh Sharma to the tune of the hit Lady Gaga single. While the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) was able to secure public performance rights for the original song, they did not seek rights to modify its lyrics, and were hence still found to be in violation of the original copyright held. In a statement, MINDEF said it did not realise that public performance rights did not constitute or include rights to modify the song lyrics. "We're in the process of working with the recording and publishing company to try to secure the rights to modify the lyrics, and, until then, we will not perform the song," said the NDP 2011 show committee chairman Colonel Ong Tze-Ch'in. He added that they will first revert to the usual format of having the show hosts announce the items in the NDP goodie bag. "What we want to do this year is to try to do it in a fresh and light-hearted way with a musical concept," he said. Since it was first performed at rehearsals last Saturday, a recording of the song that surfaced on YouTube has since gone viral, generating harsh criticism from netizens.
  21. For those wondering what is the fun pack song. This is the modify Lyrics. Wondering will Lady Gaga vomit blood? "It's the fun pack pack Let's have the fun pack...
