I think it's just the look. I think the glass types seem more troublesome to clean though.

-looks nice

-easy to clean

Minus

-glass breaking issues (heat or impact)

I think if you can get laminated glass (2 pieces of glass, 1 float 1 tempered stick together by a PVC inbetween) for the hob, it would be a lot safer to use. At least you will not find pieces of glass anywhere around the area if it breaks. You can have designs on the laminated glass itself too.
