Queries On Syn Leather Sofa

Recommended Posts

Hi Friends,

I have a few questions on syn leather sofa which hope u guys can help to enlighten :)

I went one place looking for sofa and the salesperson told me that PU leather is not a good grade of syn leather, it will peel off faster than the normal syn leather....but the salesman at another shop say PU is actually very good grade and wun peel off easily and require minimal maintenance.

Anyone has bought PU leather sofa before can share their experience?

Also, the other type of syn leather refers to PVC?

Thanks.

Hi Jason,

From my understanding, PU leather, while not the best or top grade syn leather, usually possess an acceptable to good quality. Many manufacturers (based on my knowledge) uses PU leathers for sofa with syn leather.

From what i gathered, PU leather are usually superior to PVC, and they are commonly regarded as a "step-up" from PVC, as PVC is commonly regarded as the lowest quality.

Most likely when the salesperson refers to other type of syn leather, he or she is referring to PVC.

Lastly, do take note of what the sales personnel tells you, as it is pretty common to receive sales talk that are "partially" true, if you know what i mean. It is best to feel the quality and judge for yourself or seek advice from family, relative or friends with relevant experience.

I encourage personal trial and judgement! :)

PVC is the traditional material used for synthetic leather it tends to feel more plastic than PU, PU generally feels more like real leather. However, PVC is more stable, PU has a greater tendency to peel.

However, generally speaking synthetic leather has a tendency to crack or tear over time. You are definitely better off getting cowhide unless you have a serious budget constraint.

I work in the furniture industry, I am currently using a fabric sofa, but I bought a protected leather sofa for my mother 3 years ago, the leather is still in good condition.

I would just say that synthetic leather is not a good option when it comes to sofas, on headboards or even dining chairs it would be OK.

something to share to all,

i was hunting for a set of leather sofa with my wife for the past few weeks.

went to many showroom and kana brainwashed by alot of salesman.

but did not commit on anything because i dont feel comfortable by their "sales" talk.

i got a friend working in the industry telling me that many stores sell you full leather but deliver PU, half leather or split leather at the price of full leather to maximise their profit.

very unethical way of doing business.

last sunday while shopping for sofa, my friend introduce me this company @ Kallang.

he mentioned to me that they are a sofa manufacturer and mainly do export but sometime sells locally on referral basis.

upon reaching there, i was kinda surprise that there is a showroom in a factory building.

inside got many sofa models to view and if not enough they have a catalog in IPAD! that features over 100 models...kinda savvy company.

i was greeted by 1 of their clerk...notice i wasn't talking about salesman now.

the clerk introduce himself as an export executive and start to present me the range of leather that they are selling.

they are very professional in the presentation telling me the different process and treatments on leather and the pros and cons of different processes.

for their sofa range they only use top grain corrected leather and for the softer touch full grain aniline leather, solid tropical timber wood structure and pocketed spring with high density foam.

they explain that consumer shouldn't buy sofa with material like PU or split leather as they will not last long and tear easily.

i was amaze that their design and quality are as good as those i seen in park mall and harvey norman.

after seeing their product, i was telling myself to prepare a big cheque for the quality and preparing to bargain.

but to my surprise i was quoted a price that is not only irresistable but kept me from bargaining further as the price is very fair for such quality.

in the end i bought a 3+2 full leather sofa from them and return home a happy man.

overall i give them a 4/5 for their service and product.

-1 to their factory condition showroom instead of a proper showroom.

as they are not a retail shop, it is better to make an appointment with them to view. 63966381/98328828

1 sofa down...mattress next!

Good for you Mortred.

My fiancé stubbornly placed a 50% deposit at a shop along Balestier Road for a (overpriced) "super leather" sofa and a dining table that he picked from some China catalogue in the shop plus 4 chairs that the salesman had no picture to show us, just based solely on verbal description, despite me telling him that super leather is not real leather cos the colour samples shown to us had fabric backing!

He chose to believe the salesman instead and committed to a super leather(which I strongly believe is synthetic, and it felt even more cheapo and stiff than PU) L-shape sofa for more than $2K!

Nightmare started when we researched the shop in Renotalk after committing and to our horror, it had a bad reputation! I couldn't sleep after we saw very cheapo looking China chairs that fitted our description to the salesman in a food court. I also got increasingly concerned about the safety of the huge glass table top balancing only on 2 small points diagonally from the base! I did raise this engineering concern in the shop but the salesman assured my fiancé "no problem". To close the deal, I'm sure most salesmen, if not all, will say no problem to whatever concerns raised.

I half persuaded half forced my fiancé to cancel the dining set. He couldn't stand the sight of the cheapo looking filmsy China dining chairs too and I told him we had no grounds to argue at point of delivery if the chairs do not meet our expectations because we made the mistake of not knowing how our dining chairs will look like at point of sales! I also do not want to live in fear not knowing when the glass table top will shatter under poor balancing.

As expected, the shop would only issue cash vouchers for the value of the dining set cancelled. No choice we were made to upgrade and pay more than $3K for a half leather half PU sofa!! Imagine they actually want us to pay in full before delivery!?! This time, we held our ground and refused to make full payment until we're satisfied with the delivered sofa.

Keeping my fingers crossed now... Haiz...

sad to hear that moissanite2...

i once bought a sofa from a certain "sea creature" in which they claim the leather to be Italy genuine cowhide.

didnt know and care about furniture at that time..bought it as it was cheap.

in the end the sofa lasted me 3 months and i had to throw it away as the "cowhide" is peeling heavily like dead skin.

Sorry to hear this. That's about what I paid for a 3+2 leather sofa set from Casa Italy.
