Diy Island Kitchen Cabinet

Recommended Posts

Hello home owners and future home owners,

We are currently looking into reno for our HDB 5 room.

The kitchen area is 9 sq m only!

We always wanted an island in the kitchen however due to the space constraints, we are thinking whether it is possible to do a "portable" cabinet with drawers and a table top to look like an island.

This "portable" island would be on rollers and can be pushed in and locked in place below the kitchen sink (for example) and can be moved about to double up as an island when cooking or as a spare table with drawers when having dinner at the dining area.

1. Anybody has done this before?

would appreciate ur comments and recommendations :)

2. Anybody to recommend that could do this job or can purchase from?

thanks in advance!

i think ikea has something like this, but of course cannot be customized to make it tucks into your bottom cabinet la~ :) i guess your contractor should be able to make this~

since u put DIY, here are some examples with the actual plan:

http://ana-white.com/2010/02/farmhouse-kitchen-island

http://ana-white.com/2010/10/sewing-table-small-spaces

Otherwise:

IKEA also has some island, but i doubt can be stuffed into cabinets. Most probably just push to one corner of the kitchen when not in use.

Another alternative is a "pull out island" from the under the kitchen worktop.

This is so cool! ...that link to making your own furniture is so cool!!

thanks a lot marshmallow & gimz for your quick replies!

I'll check it out IKEA this weekend too.

Btw, do u have other interesting websites for home reno?

especially on ideas and reviews of appliances?

Not sure what are good and trusted brands in the market...(i.e; fridge, tv, gas hobs, etc.)

:) this forum have many useful info for renovations. check out the tblog sections, u might find people with the same floor plan as well. Can see how they do up the house and get ideas....

but for electrical appliances, frankly not much reviews. A lot of my choices based on looks...fridge look nice then buy....haha....

i do recall that i read last time was to avoid LG air-con.

And also not to trust sales people at shops totally as they may have reasons for recommending certain brand like to hit their target, boss ask them to push due to too many stocks etc.
