Dear All, I am going to move into my new home next weekend. Was hoping if you guys can share with me the best equipment, tools and products to buy for cleaning, maintenance and repairs needed in the new home. e.g. best detergent for washing clothes, best dish washing liquid. Basically to share on best practices to guide new home owners on home maintenance. We can spend the most $ designing our dream home but if we dont upkeep it, our efforts will be in vain. Tks for the replies! I have demanded my contractor to apply oil-based sealant onto the ceiling and walls of the wet area (kitchen and toilets). Was told by another contractor that if we dont do so, the moisture will slowly breakdown the plastered wall/ceiling and dusty flakes will start to peel off. Pretty soon, my ceiling and wall will disintegrate! Furthermore, if u ingest these flaks, you will develop kidney stones. Any truth? Still pissed that my contractor used inferior plaster to plaster my home.

Dear All, Another question, I was advised by many frens that when u plaster the whole house, u need to apply paint sealant before the actual paint. My contractor insists that it is not necessary. Pls help! He said need to top up $ if we really insist. We have also asked him to quote. What would be an acceptable price for a 4 rm flat? Appreciate your comments! Tks

Dear All, Need some advice on my situation. I am in the midst of renovating a 30 yr old 4 rm flat. My ceiling in the kitchen was recently plastered about a wk ago. When I went over to have a look, a portion bulged out and started to fall when I went probed it. It seems like my contractor used inferior "cornice" plaster that was powdery and not suitable for wet areas like kitchen and toilets. He should have used chemical cement and put a layer of oil-based sealant. Is it true? When I approach my contractor, he insists that it was done correctly, to use the"cornice" plaster. And apparently, my ceiling will disintegrate with time due to the moisture content and if I inhale such powdery residues, I will get kidney stones. Pls advise. Tks!
