    Plastic Lumber

plastic is only environmental unfriendly if you throw them away as rubbish..... because they do not decompose..... as a building material, they last forever and do not require replacement, save trees, that's the logic at least as presented by them. I read that they are done by taking old wood (e.g. furniture etc), reduce them to wood chip, and the plastic is used as a binding material..... works like planks and beams, but no additional trees are cut down. alternatively, I did see bamboo being used in material like surf board and skateboard... however, wondering if they are able to be molded to standard planks and beams that we use in woodwork. I'm thinking..... DIY shops like Selfix, sells the tools, but do not sell the material.... why ? I think DIY fan, are more likely to buy in to 'go green' than professional cabinet contractor..... it's the perfect compliment product.... I think they only want to push products fast... and dun wanna waste time selling material, too much customer service involved.

    Plastic Lumber

hi, anyone heard of this before ? can't find anyone selling it in Singapore.... maybe's a good 'go green' alternative ...... use this instead of normal wood... although I'm not sure costing wise, what's the impact... might be expensive..
  3. hi, noisy when raising and lowering izzit ? that I don't mind.... unless you mean once it goes up and stay there..... when the wind blows, it's noisy... btw, where do you see that thing ? I wanna take a look....
  4. hiya, wow,$700.... okie, that is incentive enough..... let me check out the rest of the options out there first....
  5. hi, yeah, depends on which option makes sense. any good ready made ones to recommend ?
  6. Hi, I basically have a high ceiling balcony and that's where we hang our clothes. So far, what we do is to buy those cloth hanging stand and place it in the middle of the balcony and we do the drying there.... it's a big waste of space..... with 3 kids, the balcony becomes a useless area about 60-70% of the time since we are drying something almost everyday.... now... I can mount some kind of cloth hanging rack that can be lowered and raised.... and that should free up alot of space... any recommend suggestions ? products ? this might be the wrong forum to post..... but at 1 point, I was thinking of doing some DIY of some sort......
  7. hiya, thanks for the tip...... it's a first time project for me so I guessed there's still alot of 'best practises' for me to find out....... Luckily, the runners were not out by much.... I have a new respect for our friendly carpenters..... they must have years of experiences to make perfect alignment all the time... I need the trimmer to trim those irritating laminate and would be good to carve out the grooves for the drawer bottom..... yup, the jig saw was the first thing I bought (well, not exactly, everyone starts with a drill). you sound like a professional at this...... what's your vocation ? oh yah... 1 more question to add..... do people normally laminate to the board, then fix to them together ? or fix them up (like what I do) and then do the lamination ? right now I'm using 2" screws to secure board to board. If I do the laminate first, then I would need to use glue and those short wooden pegs ? I think what my cabinet maker did was to pre assembly and laminate them, bring to my house, and do final round of lamination for the edges where these pre-fab pieces are joined together....
  8. hi, I bought it in the East, at simpang Bedok.... welcome to share experiences and ideas....
  9. thanks thanks for everyone who gave comments... I'm trying to improve the next cloth drawer unit that I will build. Went crazy and bought myself a trimmer....... now I can cut grooves at the sides of the drawer for the bottom piece to slot in..... also can trim laminate perfectly...... nice nice....
  10. Hi, refer to post #11 of this thread for address. Yes, Formica needs some skil to cut and apply. Wallpaper I'm not sure of any shop recommendation.
  11. hi hi, just still learning..... so fumbling along the way.... share share experiences lah... dun say teach....
  12. Hi, I uploaded some of my DIY stuff onto my facebook.... anyone in the Singapore region will be able to see if they have facebook account... hoped you guys have no problem accessing... http://www.facebook.com/photos/?ref=sb#/al...mp;id=758294681
  13. hi, formica are hard sheet (you need a formica cutter to cut them) that you need to buy glue to stick it on.... if you walk past some shops doing renovation and smells the 'glue sniffer' high, that's the stuff they use. For a good bond, you always remove any existing laminate. by comparison, stickers are much cheaper and personally, I'm tempted to use that to lower the cost of some of the stuff that I'm doing.
  14. hi, Let me write down the info from my most recent receipt. the place is Li Fong Hardware Enterprise, 373, Bedok Road, Changi Complex, Singapore 469550, phone 64446220, 64446231, Fax 64431449 The fella whom I talk to is Ah Hong, quite a friendly person, you can get the whole catalogue from him, there are alot of different type of formica, some expensive, some cheap. You can buy the cutting tools from him as well... cheers and good luck...

    Leaking Walls

hi, last time I had leaking ceiling.... that was becos the house upstairs had something leaking down... what the contractor did was drill hole, pump some special compound in... which expands and fill up all the gaps in the ceiling... I suggest you look for professional help on this..... very hard to DIY.....
  16. Hi, I went to a tmber merchant and ask about pine wood... apparently, they say that IKEA sells them the cheapest... although IKEA would sell them as part of the shelving etc and not for DIY purposes.... any comments ? basically, where to buy big piece of pine wood for DIY cabinet....
  17. hi, I bought my fomica around $38 for a 8 feet by 4 feet piece... cutting is challenging......
  18. hi, as in get them to see if they would have any extra spaces to house the DIY club ? Might be view as contraction to their own business isn't it ?
  19. they might, but there's no reason for them to let us use it. plus we might damage their tools and that's gonna be a complicating mess to untangle. even if we know some ITE lecturer, eventually, he might be 'faulted' for holding personal woodwork party..... the school will do something mean to him.
  20. hi, basically, it's practise practise practise.... *agreed*..... applying glue without too much mess is an art.... table saw is kinda slow in cutting laminate..... I think I've got some way to go as far as formica is concerned.......
  21. hi, was sticking up my shoe cabinet... wow, not easy, each time I cut and snap it, the edge is jagged..... have to use a small file and sand them off slowly, but is this the common approach ? because it takes too long.... I tried cutting formica with a pair of scissors, amazing, it worked. But I got into trouble when I tried to cut too long a piece, it starts to crack. I was told that carpenter have a special device just for trimming the edges of formica..... what do us DIY people use ?
  22. most timber mechart will sell... I just bought mine from the sempang bedok place. Am building a shoe cabinet.... as for price, I don't have it right now..... the standard size is 8 feet by 4 feet although you don't need so much...... smaller pieces will depend. What size are you looking for ? I got some, but not very big pieces.... you can have it... it usually comes 1 side laminated white....
  23. hi, the problem is that even for a run down warehouse etc, the rental per month is gonna be quite high.... suppose we get lucky and manage to get a place for $500 a month, even if we have 20 members..... we will be paying $25 a month, which is $300 a year. The best is to find a simple location to start off.. or which brother have a big yard, can sit there and drink coffee.. share some experiences...

    Fancy Tiles

hi, where do you think I can get a piece of fancy titles.... you know, with nice pictures etc..... some of them are used as a strip across the bathroom..... they even have a story sequence etc.. I'm living in the East..
  25. hi, yeah, I've been thinking about this for quite some time myself... started my little DIY projects for my shoe cabinet and thought it would be a great idea to do something like this. Right now, the place is the biggest headache because I don't think we can afford paying high monthly rental for the place. Tools are actually not that bad, since each of us who are into DIY would already own the basic drill, jigsaw etc... we can even do some side rental business like renting drill for people (non diy) who needs to do that occasional 1 or 2 holes. well, if I can a disused corner of some factory that some people are nice enough to allow us to use, that would be the first step... meanwhile, if there's way to subsidies the rental by some other ways, that's also something we can think of... "holding classes" ? not bad...
