I think the trick is to really straighten the wires and then trim the ends to make them uniform before trying to insert through the RJ45 connectors. Speaking as if I am a 老手 after only 2 crimps. Lol

*chokes* I did consider getting those simple continuity testers when I was placing the order but decided I will just use my systems to test the connections. The Fluke network tester can only justify the cost if I am making a living doing this on a daily basis.

Hi harocarlos, all the best for your renovation although its a little pity you weren't able to work with Andy.

With the plethora of instructional videos available on YouTube these days, it isn't hard to pick up little DIY skills that will save us plenty of money. I do have to add that as I have always felt I am pretty good with my hands and this has gave me the confidence from the start that I will be performing self termination of the network cables on my own. Incidentally, the first shipment of my Amazon order arrived and they were the networking tools which will be followed by the 4 units of patch panels which are split into 3 other shipments. As I have mentioned, I actually chose the more costly, proprietary RJ45 connectors and crimping tool for ease of use. If you have the intention to go the same route as me and terminate the cables on your own, there are more affordable generic, standard tools that will get the job done as well. Here is my very first self crimped foot long patch cord for the connection between the patch panel and the switch.

From the quotations I received while shopping for my renovation firms, they range anywhere between $60 to $90 per standard, non-concealed point.

Yes, $150 to lay so many runs of cables is certainly more than reasonable but just to be clear, I supplied that cables and will be terminating the points on my own.

More updates on the work we managed to schedule forward ahead of next week's HDB cement screed. We agreed to AL's suggestion that we add a narrow wall to the study's low wall to provide better support to the fixed glass panels considering that the cost of it will be borne by him and it was up the next day after the electrician's team did their part. The false ceiling sub-contractor also came in and installed all the false ceilings, L-boxes and cove lighting boxes within the day. At this point, I have to commend AL on his project management so far. Even at short notice, he is able to arrange for his sub-contractor to come in when necessary and they have been able to keep to his schedule. We can only hope this will continue all the way through to the end of the renovation. Living Room L-box and Cove Lighting Box Passageway False Ceiling and Air-Con Trunking Box-Up

Probably just well networked, it's not like I am going to integrate home automation systems. Now, that will really be hi-tech.

I think this will largely depend on what devices you be using the data points with and whether there will be any furniture or built-in carpentry around it. In my case, as the points in my living room and study will be terminated with patch panels and integrated into the TV console and study respectively, they are laid at the height of the built-in carpentry. For the points in my bedrooms where they are terminated with faceplates, I have them dropped to the same height as the rest of the power points.

Here is a tip about the main door's swing arm that my father-in-law advised and insisted that we adopt it. To prevent unnecessary wear or damage due to over extension during the renovation period, you can consider removing the swing arm and only refitting it back after the works are completed.

The electrician had 4 workers with him and managed to complete the running of electrical wiring and network cables within the day. I headed over to check on the works and was pleasantly surprised that the false ceiling materials have already been loaded into the unit. They will be starting work the next day and be done by end of the week so that the place can be cleared for HDB cement screeding next week. No typo, $150 to lay all the network cables with trunking, plus a fibre optic cable I added in. And because I decided to go for the maximum number of connections possible, I basically consumed the entire 305m reel of cat6 cable taking into account the buffer length they left on each ends. We have not had serious discussions about the arrangements with regards to occasional help with childcare but our parents are definitely a possibility.

I remember you mentioning this on your blog but in retrospective, perhaps you could have negotiated for a better prices or sub-contract the structured cabling works to another electrician with more competitive prices? Yes, my intention was to have the electrician lay and trunk my fibre optic cable and network cables while I terminate the ends to patch panels or keystone faceplates on my own. I only brought this up to AL and his electrician offered to do it for a flat fee of $150, one of the best deals in my entire quotation. As for the IP camera, I think the only need I have for it will be for security against burglary. Both our set of parents are living just across the TPE in Sengkang, so it is highly unlikely we will ever hire a domestic helper.

The electrician and his guys came in this morning to gather and discuss our requirements before starting work. While finalizing my own network plan yesterday, I was having a hard time settling on the number of connections to run to each room. In the end, I decided that since I am paying a flat fee for the electrician to lay the cables for me and that since I have already 8-port patch panels for the TV console, I just went for the maximum of points possible, eventually leaving only 1 port on the switch unused. More to follow after I check on the finished works tonight or tomorrow...

Thanks for answering the question. As kstoh mentioned, if you can live with just loose cables coming from the trunking, then just leave them as is. Else, you can get single, dual or even quad port faceplates with keystone jacks to tidy up the area. In my case, I am using a 8-port patch panel each for the study desk and TV console as there will be plenty of runs per location. For the Main Bedroom and Bedroom 1, I will only be using dual port faceplates as the runs will be 2 and 4 points respectively. On a sidenote, I have finally gotten a date for the HDB cement screeding on 8 April and since we still have a week before they start work, AL has arranged for the electrician to come in next week to run his electrical wiring as well as my network cables. Its time to finalise and draw my network plan for the electrician as reference even though I will be on site to explain in details what I have in mind.

The main reason we did not route the trunking on the other side of the passageway was because of height of the hacked study wall, or rather the beam that remains. We did not want to run the trunking below the beam towards Bedroom 1 as that will severely affect the aesthetics of the framed glass panel, which happens to be one of our few feature. It doesn't make sense as well if we were to run the trunking around the study as there will mean longer piping and loss of cooling efficiency. Besides, it will clash with the L-boxes we plan to have in the study. After consultation with AL's sub-contractor, he concluded that it is not possible to lower the beam using just hollow blocks and we are now looking at a L-shaped box-up together the L-box we originally intended to have in the passageway. It will be pretty much similar to vicx1234's solution as depicted below. vicx1234's Air-con Trunking Box-up

Just updated the information under post 8 of this blog. I got it from Aron of Star Cool Air-Condition Engineering and liaised with their head of installation, Ah Boon for scheduling and all the nitty gritty details during installation. Their work can be found in the following thread. http://www.renotalk.com/forum/topic/9682-aircon-latest-quotes-anyone/
