Sorry to say this but frankly, if you think that your hubby's elder brother can 'escape' or 'get away scot-free', you are actually considering your PIL as a burden already. If you had sincerely wanted to help them blend in, you would feel that its a joy to have them with you and not even think that your BIL has 'escaped'. So in order to really solve this problem, you got to face yourself and really find the happiness to live with your PILs. Otherwise, you will be very upset and this is not good for your marriage.

Wah the lion open the big mouth leh!! Yes, somemore our blocks are like 40-storeys, so the time spent awkwardly in a lift with an 'unknown friend' is really quite draggy. I do not like to use the word 'strangers', because I believe in life there are no strangers. There are only friends who you had not made. -

Thanks so much for the enthusiasm! Payment-wise, does everyone have DBS/POSB internet banking? If so kindly T/T the money WITH YOUR NICKNAME AS INITIALS. Do avoid T/T from ATM because I won't see whose money is that. You can check out our "Online Consultation" with the panel of ID/contractors for their quotes, then go visit a few more others of your own for comparison. Just do abit of legwork and you should have a good picture of who is suitable for you. From your post like that very hard to recommend anything, because dun know your requirements. Also, renovation being a very personal thing, the utmost importance is you must be able to communicate with the person who will be your project coordinator for the whole process. -
Put on a smile, prepare some drinks and so on...should be ok lah! The contractor also human mah...

Hmmz, u dun get it. If you fight it the 'proper' way, you are at the losing end because they have every right not to activate for you, due to tampering of the TV points by your electrician. What i was suggesting is for you to call again to get someone down to activate the TV point, pretend that its your first time. From what I know they are abit messy and sometimes will just activate their contractors to come down without checking past records. Just cross your fingers that they won't check lor...

Huh dun hab ah?? Sorry I duno, cuz he said modified I thought got cheong one... -
Try calling again for another person to come and activate? For me it was lucky; after a few packets of drinks and some sweet words, the guy pasted the starhub sticker on the TV point in my feature wall, which is in the middle of the room and the cable ran under the parquet by my electrician. You do realised that the gist of this lies heavily on that guy who come and inspect your house; so do your best to tackle him lor. For the guy who came to my flat, his rationale was that as long as signal is strong then he will activate and paste the sticker, dun care if original or not.

Safest way is to bring a 'cheong' Wii game to go and test lor. -
What the HDB and SCV people said are true, unfortunately. This is what I understood: HDB build the flats and appointed a contractor to lay the cables, whom is at the same time approved by SCV. Thus, SCV trust this contractor for their job. However, everytime HDB build a block of flats, SCV cannot follow them to go around activating every unit; not economical. So all TV points are connected to HDB's antenna by default until someone buys an unit and call SCV to come and connect the TV points to SCV's cable. Further complications come in when we do renovation; as we all will experience, the TV points are always shifted according to our designs, but of course we will get our own electrician to do it. This is the issue; SCV only trust that HDB's contractor, but not your electrician. So they will only activate those points laid by the HDB's contractor, ie the original points. The reason for doing this is that in any case where the signal becomes bad, SCV will cover all costs to repair it. So its only fair to them that from the SCV's cables underground right to the TV point, no one else touches anything except for their own contractors. Realised on the original points, there is a sticker from HDB that says no tampering. Also, when they 'activate' the points, they will put another sticker on it with starhub's logo. This is the so-called 'warranty' for them to be responsible for that TV point. Well you could activate the points straight after getting the keys and shift them thereafter, but the key don't get caught lor. If anything happens and they realised that it had been tampered with, they have the right not to be responsible to repair it.

Are Deposit Able To Be Refunded When The Shop Closed?
zirhk3355 replied to raincole's topic in Men Women Kopitiam Corner!
I put it this way: No one would go bankrupt overnight. There are always tell-tales signs, but whether you can spot it depends on how in-depth you had done your homework. But then again, I agree with you, sometimes we do not check on the seller / service-provider, because we are not the banks/police and thus do not have access to some checks. Or the cost (and/or time-taken) of such is simply not worth it. Then what to do? The answer is to take calculated risks, not blind risks. Do all the possible checks within your reasonable means, then leave the rest to the guy "up there", whichever religion you are...hehe. Simply put, at the end of the day you do not want to kana some problems and go, "aiya, why didn't I check first...??" -
You can find good IR repeater systems like Niles, Xantech, or Russound at sim lim or adelphi, those audio shops. If you are keen to get those flush-mount (ie can put behind a piece of tinted glass on your cabinets/feature-wall) type of targets, then go to pay more lor. Otherwise usually its a small table-top design, akin those you see for wireless keyboards and mouse. I think because the local shops are quite well-stock, getting directly from overseas won't save you alot of money, not forgetting warranty and technical support issues.

zirhk3355 replied to raincole's topic in Men Women Kopitiam Corner!
Definitely, its always a risk that we are taking. But if looking at it from a bigger picture, its only fair because the ID/contractors need a certain amount of commitment from our side to start work mah. Putting yourself in their shoes, imagine you start work and order materials already, then the client backs out, what recourse would you have? The answer is the deposit lor. Just like in every deal, its always 'caveat emptor', let the buyer beware. Because we as client gives our commitment, its our responsibility to do our homework on the seller or service provider. -

Erm sorry that one I cannot; the only skills I have in terms of 'cookery' is eating it...haha... So fast change hands liao?? Anyway, I also vote for catering of mini buffet, cuz they would come with easy-to-use plastic utensils and also disposable crockery, instead of plastic bags and wrappers from the 'zhi-cha'. Price-wise don't worry, because if everyone is ok with $15/pax budget, we could get quite decent catering liao. 'Zhi-cha' won't be much cheaper, anyway... Also for those who are confident of your cookery like oda, please do come with your homecooked food instead of joining in to cater, so that our spread can be more interesting. -

Is your husband the elder brother? If so then its natural, cannot say his younger brother get away 'scot-free' lah. But if your hubby is the younger son, then it must be because his parents like him more lor. Also, its not fair to say they make you feel awkward; I felt the issue is because they are not close to you. Eg if my parents come over my flat and we have our friends here, they will also feel paiseh and leave quickly. Of course I do not know what they are thinking exactly, but if I were to guess, I think they actually care for you and your hubby, so they want to give you both some space with your guest mah. Really, just try hard to get close to them; buy what they like to eat, let them watch their fav tv programmes, fill up the hot flask for them, etc. At the end of the day, you are their beloved son's wife, they won't be too hard on you lah.
