  1. I like this. Will it give rise to water marks though, OceanEleven, seeing as it's rather close to the ceiling? Or is there no cause for concern? Thank you.
  2. The electrical guys protected/shielded the tiles with a cardboard when they were working on the wiring. It might not be a big deal, but we really appreciated the care they took of the tiles.
  3. Ceiling colour sounds like a good idea. If one is in the mood for some colour, it's right there. If not, just don't look up. And it goes with the green version of Mama Lemon! Could I trouble you for the price that your contractor quoted you for the custom study table (white, L-shaped), please? That does look like a generous amount of carpentry works for $25k. Well done, Jez2014.
  4. I really like your feature wall. The colour scheme too – the colours of the feature wall, tv console laminate, ceiling, skirting, plus the whites all seem to produce a pleasing visual combination.
  5. Kitchen Sink We bought the Blanco Dalago sink: It seemed to meet all of our requirements 1) Design: Simple, single bowl, and with a ledge on which the mixer tap can be mounted.2) Quality: One of the Blanco favourites.3) Size: Small enough to share one side of the kitchen with the hob and the refrigerator. 4) Price: $408. Colour-wise, our first choice was white. However, the person at Hoe Kee, a helpful guy, cautioned my husband against it. He said white would stain. My husband messaged me and I did a quick search: Source I did find a couple of positive experiences though:Source To err on the side of caution, we decided to go with the black. With ID's blessing! #phew Installation-wise, flush mount.
  6. Everything looks good! Looks pretty to me too. Lovely.
  7. I think your wish list looks good! Looking forward to your reno. Congrats on your new home. I am sorry to hear about your dog.
  8. Progress Photos From ID Keith’s photos normally come in the afternoon and early evening. We look forward to them. We appreciate him sending the pics for we are not able to pop into the flat every day to witness and enjoy the day-to-day progress in person! Day 8 Plastering the entrance to the kitchen: And the kitchen walls: The walls will be painted white after plastering. When I saw Keith's photos, I was reminded of the following pic – that beautiful raw look, where the joint lines of the blocks (tiles in our case) behind were faintly visible: Source I shared Keith's photos and the above IG pic side by side in a collage. My friend's sister liked the walls and wanted the same effect for her living room Her new house is big, one of those cluster and landed homes with a sizeable, high-ceilinged living room. I think she is in the second round of negotiations, or in the process of wrapping up the purchase/sale or something. We are all excited for her!
  9. Beam Above Windows We also measured the depth of the horizontal beam above the windows in the living room and bedrooms. I am not sure if all flats share the same depth, but here it is should you require it (perhaps for space planning, carpentry planning, window-covering planning, etc). Hope this helps:
  10. After Day 2, we had a couple of quiet days. On Day 5, my husband, ID and the electrician had a discussion. The next day, my husband dropped by the house to have a look at the wiring works. The light switch at the wall adjacent to the main entrance: We would like to have our switches shifted downwards, similar to those in the following pic: Source This is in the service yard, for the dryer. We would prefer the upper part of the walls to be free/empty and are thinking of placing the dryer on the other side of the service yard (instead of mounting it above the washing machine). I think this power point is located directly across from that of the washing machine, of the same height and distance from the walls. Keith recently mentioned that our electrical conduit (an industrial element of the design) would be about as thick as those in the photo above! We could not help but feel a bit nervous after hearing that – having lengths of something of that thickness running across the ceiling could overwhelm our small house. Not to mention detract somewhat from the minimalist style that we are going for. He assured us that the outcome would be within acceptable limits and our tolerance threshold. We hope that is true! Keith also told us that he was planning to use a special kind of paint for the conduit that, when applied, would give the conduit the same pristine white colour as the ceiling/walls, as well as possibly prevent them from yellowing in the future or something like that. Good ID. #thumbsup Hopefully that would make the conduit blend into the ceiling/walls and thus less conspicuous? We are keeping our fingers crossed! My husband said the electrician was a nice guy too, who displayed a positive approach to challenges ("yes, achievable", "can be done", etc.) during their discussion.
  11. Happy New Year, Renotalkers. I hope all of you will have a wonderful 2015. We are at the midway point of the renovation, I think. Wet works and window installation are complete. The first coat of paint (base coat?) is up too. I hope to get this t-Blog written and updated soon. Though perhaps not ‘write’, at least not per se. After all, I am not actually writing the posts but simply extracting from my FB, IG, etc. those that pertain to the renovation and posting them here. Anyway, Day 2: Day 2On the morning of Day 2, Keith sent us the following photo: The cracks might have stemmed from the master bedroom door frame, which used to be on the other side of the wall. It was removed the day before and Keith deduced that, given its proximity to the bathroom wall, the force of removing it could have caused the tiles to crack. He was honest with us about the matter – we really appreciated that. Thankfully, it seemed only a few peripheral tiles were affected; the rest came through unscathed. He assured us that the waterproofing was fine. And that the tiles would be replaced, and that they would be as good as new after replacement. Here are some pics for your reference, if you happen to have a door frame in a similar position. The door frame: Removed: “If I am going down, I am taking the tiles with me…” Heav’n has no rage, like love to hatred turn’d,/Nor H-e-l-l a fury, like a door frame scorn’d. The 'offending' door frame (in pink):The walls in blue – A, B, C and D – are the ones removed. If you happen to have a similar floor plan and are planning to combine the two bedrooms into one, it may help to know that that vertical beam-like thing at the end of wall A can be removed, and without having to engage a PE.
  12. Hi Jacelyn. I used Keynote, the Mac equivalent of PowerPoint. Happy New Year
  13. Thanks! A large storage closet in the common bathroom sounds like a good idea – go for it. I would love to have one too, but I'm afraid I can't fit it into my budget nor my bathroom, both of which are small. Happy 2015, by the way. Another year closer to your key-collection date – you must be thrilled!
  14. Hi Beltoh and Deneos. My apologies, I have been a little bit busy of late. I have just sent Kelvin's number to you both. Hope that helps and good luck. Happy New Year, Takaishi! I tried sending you his number just now, but your mailbox seemed to be full? I shall try again later.
  15. Hi everyone. Just a quick post to wish all of you a merry Christmas! May love, joy and peace fill all your days ahead. And your homes! Source Actually, all I want for Christmas is a good renovation. #pleasesanta Ok, we're off now to the midnight mass. I hope I'll be able to find some time in between the festivities these few days to catch up on my RenoTalk renovation journal.
  16. Thank you! Exciting indeed Not having to squeeze with the crowds sounds good! Can't wait for our turn next year. Thanks, MintyVintage, and the same to you! Have a beautiful first Christmas at your new home!
  17. Day 1: Floor Tiles "On the first day of Christmas, my true love sent to me . . . " Something else happened on the first day – Hafary delivered the tiles! Day 1 was a wonderful day. Our tiles are the Concept White tiles by Cifre ( Hafary link | Cifre link ). They are made in Spain, and are priced at $4.50 psf. Isn't she a beauty?
  18. Thanks, Charm! I am excited about your place too! I prefer Table 3, because I like the legs. But I think every piece you have posted looks nice.
  19. Day 1: Walls "On the first day of Christmas, my true love sent to me . . . " The walls were removed on the first day! Yippity yip! We were simply thrilled when we saw Keith's pics. Actually, 'thrilled' did not quite cover it! And then there were none...whoop! #whoopwhoop Materials were delivered, too.
