Hi, thinking of DIY-ing wall decals myself. Anyone done this before? What are the materials required?

Haven't done it cos duno how...duno what materials to buy also....decals like that of winkplay or blik but figured if i design myself and DIY the decal will be alot cheaper....

Air, wall Decals are actually very similar to car decals. All you need is to comeout with the artwork in illustrator or if u do not have this software, any image editing software to render the image in at least 200 dpi. Take the softcopy and pass it to any car sticker shop to do. i believe its much cheaper this way.

But those kinda car decals are unable to stick on walls right? Cos different surfaces leh....

Ask the printer about vinyl material - they should know.

I've done decals on my drawer before coz my blur hubby always open

the wrong drawer to look for his stuff.

This is an Ikea drawer, in plain Hi-Gloss White laminate

This is what it looks like...

What you need to know :

1 ) X- Acto Knife

If you wanna D.I.Y. your own decals, you'll need an X-acto knife.

It's an excellent tool for crafting and cutting intricate designs

2 ) Vinyl

This is the material they use to make decals. I got mine from a hardware shop.They sell by the meter.

Sometimes they come in matte , semi-gloss or hi-gloss.

3 ) Design & Patterns

Get a design or pattern that you like and then you cut , cut , cut.

But remember , the more intricate or smaller the design , it's gonna get tricky.

Start with simple designs 1st, and get the hang of using the x-acto knife.( Very sharp )

The bigger the design , the harder it's gonna be for you to put up on the wall.

There's a special technique on how to apply wall decals.

Which hardware shop did u buy from? I can't seem to find any shops that sell vinyl stickers...

I've seen the vinyll and the xacto knife selling from artfren before. or u can use a pen knife..

i did my decal below with a pen knife but its hard to cut lor. maybe xacto knife will be easier.

T.Mandy, yes possible to diy but downside is you need alot of time to put up the decals slowly and make sure no air is trapped under the decals, got to smooth it down. Plus if wall is uneven & rough, need to clean wall and smoothen it flat a few times compared to even and smooth walls. You do not need to have ful pict, maybe a partial pic which might be cheaper? I did a partial pic on my walls also. Its still cheaper than doing wallpaper that is.
