How Much To Pay For Chinese Contemp Art Oil Painting?

Recommended Posts

hi all,

Just wondering as we are at the getting "pieces" for house stage. Was shopping around chinatown today at some the nice galleries and saw this quite nice oil painting of a Mao Baby ... the price quoted was $400 (down from 480). Its definitely not by any of the famous chinese contemp artist. Is this price reasonable? Coz we got an intricate shanxi chinese window frame about 1m by 1m (planning to hang as an art piece) for oni $380 at another shop in the area ... any advice appreciated. :)

thx

Haha, mace I got another longer version of that:

Beauty lies in the total abandonment of the observer and the observed and there can be self-abandonment only when there is total austerity.

Art has no price; you pay what feel is worth paying for.

hi leen,

Chinese contemporary art also known as Chinese pop art, its abit caricature, abit mocking style ... it is quite the rage round the world, fetching ridiculous prices. For me personally, as a student of History specialising in East Asia, some of the artwork quite fascinating. In Sg, there is a Raffles City gallery which stocks them, u can check out the following links:

hope it helps :)

zirkh, mace : lol wat about this response to the beauty beholder paradox

"for the first time in world history, mechanical reproduction emancipates the work of art from its parasitical dependence on ritual. To an ever greater degree the work of art reproduced becomes the work of art designed for reproducibility."

dats why we suffer indecision ...

thank you for enlightening me. that is the 'in' type of painting nowadays.

it really depend on whether you like it or not. juz like when you set your eyes on your hse or car, the 1st instinct that cum to you (either love or hate), that is the piece.

imagine if you go hm without it, do you still dream abt, think abt it and want to own it vy much? and will your heart feel pain, feel 'ai say, shld hv that piece...' if you didn't own it?

really, like wat zirkh and mace says, beauty lies in the eyes of beholder. every piece of art is different and hv different worth.

juz my 2cents...

What does "reasonable" mean? You can't compare one painting with another and say x is more expensive, so it's not reasonable. If you are buying the same car from two different dealers, then you can say that the dealer who charges you 50% more is unreasonable. But a painting is unique, you can't compare like that.

But a painting is unique

the work of art reproduced becomes the work of art designed for reproducibility

Yes agree with you absolutely, the issue of uniqueness is what i am grappling with. :paint:

wah, you all like chinese chinese stuffs ya? well, during my stay at china (for work), i go many places. if you visit there, you will find vy intricate art pieces, even carpentry work art piece type, all done by hand.

eg. wood carving of phoenix, bat, birds, etc. which is used as door or window are all fully done by hand.

and those that are regarded as low quality or standard, is already in vy gd standard here. i hv seen some of those teak furniture stores that sell teak furniture with carvings here, i can't say they are of standard. some of these furnitures that are selling for high price here, is consider low standard in china. those are done by practicising art students.

but wat to do, if we import in these pieces or fly them in from china, it will be **** ex. but in china, these things are cheap. even for paintings, coz too many artists and also they really do vy gd paintings. that is why consumers in asia here are taken advantage of, meaning if you want gd quality art/furniture from china, retailers will import in but at a high price when in fact the actual cost in china is **** cheap. eg. if you pay for 1 chair from retailer here, the price can get you 3 at china. (this is an eg.)

hi leen -- yar, totally agree that the pricing of some stuff in Sg is truly ridiculous. Would love to take a month and pack across China just to scour for some good buys but unfortunately can only contemplate this kind of activity as a post retirement ideal job  to be honest its not only China, there are some fabulous wood-carving stuff, furniture and paintings in Indonesia and Thailand which are reallie very cheap compared to Sg. Like this sofa stool which we lug all the way back from Chattuchak, grand total of $40

DSCN0022.jpg

hi MaCe -- got this from Chinatown at this shop called Dragon Export, opp the Indian temple. Prefer the unvarnished and slightly rustier look .. some of the varnished rosewood a bit too gleaming or shiny for our liking
