Laminates For Bay Window - Ok?

I have heard people say that laminates for bay windows can look really nice, especially since there are so many types, even leather lookalikes! Yet some people say laminates cannot withstand the sun, so should not be placed on bay windows... any truth to this? Anyone have laminates on their bay window?

Dear Topline,

From what I have experienced, Lamination on the top or covering bay windows will be one of the solution to make the whole entire room looks nicer (of course depends on the style and colours that you've chosen).

Some of the benefits that you can achieve by having lamination over bay windows are;

1. Easier to maintain, if you sit a lot on the bay window, you don't need to worry to spill the water on the top of it, or dirty it... because laminate is pretty easy to clean.

2. Price wise, is good compared to other finishing for bay windows.

Negative things by using laminates over bay windows are;

1. If its exposed toward direct sunlight or direct rain, it will have some contraction.

(not to mention, usually bay window side will have curtains...so this will reduce the impact of direct sunlight)

2. If your bay window pretty long, you'll see some joint lines.

Those explanations are based on a standard knowledge of laminates over bay windows for your considerations. Hope it helps. ^^

Ah.. I forgot to let you know that Laminats is not waterproof, But I believe its water and heat resistant.

Lamination for the bay window can be expensive, about $700+ each, depending on the length. Anyone can advise if there is a cheaper alternative to 'cover up' the bay window? Will it be 'ugly' if we simply paint the area and put cushion on top?

I'm using solid wood at my bay windows.. Nice feel and not as expensive as granite which I was considering at first.. I had laminated carpentary at my old place and they didn't last, started to peel off in a while, probably becos of the sun..
