Just starting my reno @ Simei too :)

hey hey! that's fast! start ur reno blog too ya! get it on ur sig so we can all go see :D

the number of colours isn't the issue, it's how much we understand the colours. colours need to talk to one another in a meaningful manner.

my suggestions if you are insistent on a red kitchen island would be to go for:

1. a white table top

2. a stainless steel or glass (not black) backsplash

3. white or silver/stainless steel lampshades

Kitchen_bnw_edit.jpg

hey floppy thanks for the colourful insights (no pun intended :P)

the hanging lamps are definitely not those in the design haha it's just we can't find other light models so we just used whatever the program has.. the backsplash u mentioned glass but what kinda colour? we were thinking black colour wud look sleek and easier to maintain as well~~

Another update on the damages:

Bed Mattress and Frame

This I did another bout of research so as not to be a "carrot head" for all the sales persons out there. There has been many threads in Renotalk, and there are even articles calling the entire industry a scam. So after much hours of reading and checking around, I summarized a few points:

1) Don't believe in salespeople who tell you "You spend one-third of your life on your bed so you should be ready to fork out ten bazillion bucks for this super duper mattress". Advice: It's a sales gimmick just like stupid DeBeer's campaign that caused all us guys having to buy overpriced pieces of charcoals for our beloved wives. Ignore them.

2) Try, try and try more. Don't ever let the sales people limit your choices, and don't feel compelled to stay in their section. Move around and try.

3) The big brand names of SSS (Serta, Simmons, Slumberland) and others like King Coil etc, all will result in marked up prices. This is the same with everything everywhere. Personally, I feel that there's no need to stick with the big names (again as with everything) if the small names can give you the same comfort level with cheaper rates.

4) Don't bother googling for your mattress model unless it's like some 15k mattress. All dept stores have diff names for their models (although the mattress is the same!!!!) to create the exclusive effect, and hence mark up prices.

5) Don't buy from big stores like Courts, Robinsons, unless you got a huge budget because they will mark up the prices like mad.

6) Look around at mattress centres around Singapore, besides dept stores, to have a better feel. I found two (Cheap Mattress Centre: 565 Macpherson Road, The Mattress Centre: 8 Jalan Ismail) which I went to check out.

If you've been following my blog you would know that I have a $888 credit at Courts due to the LG washing machine. So we thought "Ok let's exchange for a mattress". So went there, tried the mattresses, the only decent ones (I won't even say it's good) were at least $1,500! And their headboards with 4 little crystals already $500. So in total, we were looking at a mattress+headboard of about $2,100, which I simply don't agree with!! that's ridiculous!!

So, we went to Cheap Mattress Centre yesterday (565 Macpherson Road), and spoke to sales uncle KC Lim. When we reached, first impression was 'lok kok" haha.. building old, stairs old, showroom nothing to cheer about but they do have lots of brands to try on. We tried everything from crappy spring only (few hundred), to the ultra luxurious (3-4k). In the end wifey and I fell in love with a Princebed mattress lolz.. 2 inch latex and all that but it had the nicest feel, which was comparable to the 3k King Koil mattress next to it!

It was kinda out of our budget.. with a price of $1,530, so I gave a sad puppy look to KC, who said lowest he can go is $1,500. Then wifey and I then ding dong ding dong a long while, then combine give sad puppy look number two :( ! He finally relented and asked our price range, so we said $1.2-$1.3k... so he went over took his calculator and type type type.. and guess what he gave it to us at $1.2k! Of course we very happy so went on to look at some headboards.. Argued with wifey over a white or black headboard, and wifey came up with a "I want a luxury item" and insisted in adding crystals into the white leather headboard (yeah she won the arguement  ).. Headboard was $350 and the crystals (I calculated that they needed about 12 crystals) were $100 more so total damage of headboard and matteress is $1,650

So that ends the mattress/headboard hunt :D

it may be difficult to achieve a balance with black (glass) backsplash with black (lower) cabinets, red island kitchenette, and white (top) cabinets (your id could/should advise you). if you really want black glass, you'll have to use very lightly tinted black glass.

if you keep the the majority of the warmer (and 'heavier') colours to the bottom half (black, red) and the majority of the cooler (and 'lighter') colours (white, clear frosted glass, stainless steel) to the top, the overall effect should be ok. i would try to use stainless steel backsplash in your kitchen, doesn't feel as heavy as black glass.

So after the mattress hunt, we went to Courts (AGAIN!!! OMG I HATE THAT PLACE) to check out what we can do with the $888 credit.

First off, I wish to inform everyone who reads my blog, NEVER EVER SHOP FROM COURTS, well, if you're a bargain hunter like me. Courts does not sell their things cheaply, even with their so-called Mega Raya Sale. It's crap I tell you! All their stuff is expensive compared to other stores like Best Denki or Gain City. Even Harvey Norman sometimes get cheaper than them. So I deeply regret having bought the **** LG washer from them in the first place. Ok end of rant.

In short, we looked around, scratched head, discussed and argued about what is priority and we lan lan have to buy from Courts one.. so agreed it was the hob and hood. So went there, they didn't have Rinnai, only Turbo and Tecno and Uno.. urghZ! Suck thumb went with Turbo package $651..

Turbo Hob 703VTSC

Turbo Hood T601-90SS

Personally, I don't think it was a fantastic deal though but because we had to spend it so we just lived with it!

In addition, we went ahead to get a sexy Panasonic Microwave and also a mini electric oven from Mistral. Sigh I think we ganna chop by Courts! Nonetheless, it will be the last time!

Ha.. Yah.. scratches.. but huh.. my percious solid top wic i try protect as much as possible from the beginning, also had scratches oledi.. coz cleaning bah.. stil looking for the food cloth to clean the solid top so as to minimize scratches.

anyway.. i stil like the shiny laminates.. coz u wld clean more of solid top then the doors of the cabinets..

btw, black for tiles, backsplash or laminates is not THAT easy to maintain huh..

Actually if u got time after visit to your hse, can drop by my pl (since sooooo near.. :P ) Ha.. Let u see what is shiny laminate and black tiles. Easier if u see live samples.. :P

black is actually harder to maintain as the dust that stick on the surface make it more clearly to be seen.

zis is a disaster... but i think we will still got for glossy darcoloured/black for bottom cabinets to have a warmer feeling to the kitchen~~ will have to pic colours soon! jason, you have seen aga aga how we want the kitchen/living room, so would appreciate if you can come up with a few colour schemes using your program so we can discuss as well! you can suggest other colours for us as well.. this one u can show us later when we need to choose laminates/paint/tiles!

Haiz...

new development liaoz! Wifey went down to house and saw a letter of demand for some BUGGER (REUEL SAMSON GELLIDO, NRIC: S7068217F) to pay up to some crappy company called Eurohub Credit. At least not some loanshark, but the person Mike (HP: 90262699) sure sounds like one. Called him up, told me to look for ICA to HELP him find where the guy went, but I asked agent and she advised us to go NPC make report. So wifey went down made a report liao and then I called that Mike to tell him the NPC said he should stop looking for us or it will constitute harassment. That son of b.itch actually had the gall to say "harassment ah? ok loh whatever you want" then hung up on me.

I am looking forward to see what the NPC will do, or else surely gonna write up to Town Council or SPF HQ liao..

:( I'm very sad that this happened.. And I was pretty scared when I was alone at the house just now.. Not supposed to happen at our first home!!

I googled Eurohub Credit and they've got a couple of adverts like "Eurohub Credit is a professional Licensed Moneylender company" so i hope they won't resort to Ah Long tactics.. I'm hoping that this is the last of this episode.

Quite an adventure if you think positive about it ;)

I also encountered the same thing as u! :horse:

Very pissed and angry that I went to NPC and the officer on duty told me "there's nothing that we can do"... :curse: Ask me to go to ICA, which I did by e-mailing them the very nite.. The whole family of buggers didn't changed their address for more than one year! :jawdrop:

Anyway, to cut the story short, the whole family of buggers (father, daughter and son) owed a lot of institutions money, both private and govt. In the end, the son and daughter finally changed thir IC address but not with the private institutions. The father bugger (Lim Peng Choon), apparently our SPF is out in force looking for him but still can't find him! :bangwall:

But now, I have something better in hand - the son's new address! So any financial institution looking for the father bugger, I will direct to the son bugger! :P The son has still not changed his address with some pte institutions, so I will too, direct them to his new address, esp the one that he owes money for his car! Let them tow away his car! :furious:

Anyway, word of advice. If u receive letters from govt sectors, u had better inform ICA coz it means the bugger if an ex-owner had obviously not changed his address! 8|
