But now when buying a car, you can actually order some kind of report from insurance or official databases to check things. Don’t you need that? Maybe you’d find all the info you need there.

If you mean the VIN report, that’s not optional, it’s basically a must because how else are you going to get reliable info about the car? Maybe it’s important to pick a good service, but I’ve used FAXVIN and the report there is cheap and quick to get. In other words, if you’re buying a used car, you should definitely get a VIN report and look at the real facts instead of trusting what the owner says.
