How to choose the right aircon for a room

Choosing the right air conditioning system is one of the most critical decisions for any home renovation in our hot and humid climate. Getting it wrong can lead to freezing rooms, warm spots, or skyrocketing electricity bills.

 

To help our community navigate this, the Admin team has put together this quick checklist on how to choose the perfect aircon for your space.

 

1. Size Matters: Understanding BTU (Cooling Capacity)

The most important factor is the BTU (British Thermal Unit) rating. If the BTU is too low, the aircon will overwork and fail to cool the room. If it's too high, it will cool the room too fast without removing the humidity, leaving the room feeling cold and clammy.

 

Quick BTU Sizing Guide:

 

• Standard HDB/Condo Common Bedroom (10 - 15 sqm): 9,000 BTU
• Master Bedroom (15 - 20 sqm): 12,000 BTU
• Standard Living Room (20 - 30 sqm): 18,000 to 24,000 BTU
• Large / Open-Concept Living Area (30+ sqm): 24,000+ BTU (or two separate units)

Tip: If your room faces the direct afternoon sun (West-facing) or has very high ceilings, bump up the capacity to the next tier.

 

2. The "System" Setup (System 1, 2, 3, or 4)

In Singapore and Malaysia, split aircons are sold as "Systems," which tells you how many indoor blower units connect to one outdoor compressor.

 

• System 1: 1 indoor unit + 1 compressor (Best for a single room).
• System 2/3/4: 2, 3, or 4 indoor units + 1 compressor (Best for whole-house cooling, common for HDB BTOs and Condos).

Important: Be mindful of the compressor’s maximum capacity. If you run a System 4 with all four units turned on at the same time, they share the compressor’s total power, which might reduce the cooling speed in each room.

 

3. Inverter vs. Non-Inverter

Always go for an Inverter aircon if it's for your home.

 

• Non-Inverter: The compressor turns on at 100% power to cool the room, then shuts off entirely when the temperature is reached. This constant on/off cycle consumes a lot of electricity.
• Inverter: The compressor smoothly adjusts its speed to maintain the temperature. It is much quieter, cools more evenly, and saves up to 30-50% on electricity bills over time.

4. Energy Efficiency (The Tick Rating)

Look at the NEA Energy Label (or the equivalent energy star rating in Malaysia).

 

• More ticks = More energy efficient.
• A 5-tick aircon will cost more upfront than a 2-tick or 3-tick model, but if you run your aircon every night, the 5-tick model will easily pay for itself through lower electricity bills within a year or two.

5. Maintenance and Piping

Even the best aircon will leak or break down without proper installation.

 

• Piping: Insist on high-quality, thicker copper piping (at least 22 Standard Wire Gauge / SWG) and upgraded Armaflex insulation (at least 1/2 inch thick). Thin insulation is the #1 cause of condensation and ceiling leaks!
• Servicing: Choose a brand known for reliable after-sales service and easy-to-find spare parts (e.g., Daikin, Mitsubishi Electric, Panasonic).

Picking the right AC for a room is tricky. Too small and it struggles, too big and it feels cold and wet. You also have to decide between a split system or a window unit. I did a lot of research and ended up getting a split system. For the installation, I found product air heating and they are a Mitsubishi preferred installer. That gave me peace of mind because Mitsubishi makes great units and you want someone who knows them inside out. The team came out, measured my room, and recommended the perfect size. Consider the size of the room before choosing an aircon

The size of the room where you intend to put the air conditioner is essential in deciding what type of air conditioner to get. If you purchase an air conditioner that’s too small, it will not be able to cool down the air well enough. On the other hand, if you buy an air conditioner that’s too big, it will cool down the room quickly, but only remove some of the humidity. This can make your home feel cold and clammy as if there was never an air conditioner running at all. As such, it can cool larger rooms more quickly than a window air conditioner. In addition, the compressor is located outside of your home, so the noise level can be greatly reduced.

On the other hand, because they require installation by professionals, split air conditioners tend to be more expensive than window models.

Window Air Conditioner

The main advantage of a window air conditioner is affordability. They are much cheaper than split models and are easier to install. If you only have a small room that needs to be cooled and doesn’t want to pay for installation, this model is right for you.

Energy Efficiency Ratio

Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) measures how efficiently an air conditioner uses energy in its cooling process. The higher the EER rating, the more efficiently it uses energy.

Consider additional features like an Anti-bacterial filter, Dehumidifier, etc…

Depending on where you live a dehumidifier can be helpful (especially in a monsoon climate). An anti-bacterial filter can be handy if you have kids or someone who is prone to asthma at home. One of the most important things to consider is the noise level of the AC unit. Many people forget about this and end up buying an AC that sounds like a train and keeps them awake every night.
