Building A Play Room
Date: 01 Feb 2010

Kids, toddlers, babies. It is undeniable that they need to play and playing is part of growing up well. You can build a playroom that allows them to explore their senses of touch, show their creativity and have playdates in a nice cozy environment of your home.

Playroom Flooring

Ceramic or vinyl tiles are ideal for craft areas and area rugs can be added to make activities like putting together floor puzzles or building skyscrapers more comfortable. Provide soft play surfaces with good quality playmats or interlocking rubber tiles. The popular ones are those LG/Parklon Korean Playmats which are non-toxic and the heavy-duty, non-slip material is easily cleaned with a damp sponge and soap.

Furniture

Playroom furniture should be lightweight and easy to move. You may introduce a tent with a comfortable matress underneath instead of a bed.

Writable Wall Decorations

writablewall Instead on spending money on expensive paintings, why not let them draw on erasable walls? Here are some options:

Install color-in wallpaper. This wallpaper comes with black-and-white designs drawn in. It's like a giant coloring book for your walls. You can use markers, crayons, colored pencils or paints to fill in the designs yourself with your own custom color selections, or install it in a child's room and let her imagination run wild

Use chalkboard paint. Paint a small square or a whole wall and use it like a regular chalkboard. This is especially popular in kitchens and works great on a pantry door. If you find it difficult to brush the paint on your walls, you can paint large sheets of steel with the chalkboard paint instead and hang them up. This way, you can even stick magnets on them!

Stick up dry-erase decals. These are essentially dry-erase boards in fun shapes. They have an adhesive backing like a sticker, but peel off the wall without harming the paint or paper underneath. They come in a large assortment of colors and shapes and are relatively inexpensive.

Storage

Hanging shoe holders make great playroom storage tools. These versatile holders can hang over the door and work well on the outside of closet doors, or may hang on a nail anywhere on the wall, depending on the selected style. Shoe holders can be used to store small doll accessories, collections of race cars or small stuffed toys, or even arts and crafts supplies.

Let your child decorate sturdy, oversized cardboard boxes with paints, markers, wrapping paper scraps, stencils, etc. When the boxes are finished, use them in the playroom as toy boxes for dolls, stuffed animals, or big cars and trucks. Toy hammocks that attach to the corner of the wall are also a cute way to store stuffed toys. Outgrown cots, toddler beds, or playpens can become a home to these adorable toys as well.
