Article : Stylistic Modernism

Photos by Ideal Design| Text by Edgar Kieu

Upping the style quotient of an apartment is not difficult but it requires a high level of trust between the designer and the home owner. Here in this article, we feature a bold contemporary modern design with just the right blend of the tasteful and the artistic for that home you desire.

The hall and the adjoining dining area is playfully decked out in ultramarine and white tones with yellow lights augmenting the colour scheme. Neat symmetrical lines stand strong in the design scheme with ordered shelves featured prominently on the TV console area. Complimenting the yellow lights is a table lamp with a yellow lampshade which gives a quirky visual distraction amongst the blue background.

Meanwhile, the dining area is uniquely designed to be surrounded by clear glass panels with the seats on one end forming part of the partition. The glass table compliments the panels and the chandelier above adds the perfect finishing touches to the dining atmosphere. Recessed cornices above provide the rest of the necessary lighting without being too harsh and it itself serves as a design feature of the dining room.

The kitchen strikes a radically different tone with stark black and red taking centre stage with strongly lit bases of the cabinets helping to disperse any unpleasant hollow design spaces. Functional appliances are uniformly silver coloured with the selection of a multi-coloured knife set adding some colour to the strong tones. The fridge with its pure white colour helps even out the intensity of colour and provides visual continuity with the plain white ceiling and floor. Over near the bar counter, unique space-age lamps cast a blue tint upon the counter and the ceiling above, adding to the retro-inspired look.
The other kitchen design featured is more muted with its use of colour, choosing to stick with the modern dark brown, black and white with glass finishing providing some sense of space in this room with very little leeway in terms of space for design. As such, the careful placement of the various essential features in the kitchen makes for a functional living space without the clutter. Neatly stacked, the microwave and the oven sit at arm’s height for easy cooking and baking and the space above and below is not wasted with the placement of cupboards and shelves. Alongside the traditional gas cooker are two induction cooker tops to save space as they can be used like a normal counter top.

The bathroom featured is reminiscent of a spa with earthly tones being the predominant feature. A bath tub feature is built into the bathroom alongside a shower area. The motifed wall behind the shower  head adds a touch of class to the bathroom while breaking the brown monotony. The vanity top area boasts of a designer water faucet which maintains the sleek style of the washroom.

The boldness of design returns in the bedroom with red and black being prominently featured, this time carefully laid upon with floral motifs that are also present on the bedsheet. Luxurious crimson coloured silky curtains provide for shade and privacy while the panels behind the headrest give the bedroom its unique finishing touches.

Interior design is but a culmination of an exchange of ideas and the compromise between the artistic ideals of the designer and the needs of the consumer. As shown by these designs, the two need not be antagonistic and the needs can easily be matched with good communication and rapport.
