Article : Cosy Simplicity

Photography Tan Jian Xiong Text Samuel Lee

The stark reality for ordinary new couples these days is that the new HDB flats are getting smaller. This is certainly so for the today’s feature, sited in the virginlands of Punggol. But for what it lacks in space, it makes up in its simple beauty, coziness and the prospect of easy maintenance.
180 view The decorations were straight forward and comely and stepping through the front door, one is immediately greeted by their neat display on this surrealist cuboidal shelf, with the dark tones nicely matching the white background.

The dining area consist of a simple Japanese looking table and chair with matching lights. Again, the choice of dark coloured materials contrasts nicely with the lighter surroundings and together with the simple lines and clean angles, helps bring about a gentle simplicity about it.

Serendipitously, because the owners prefer dark coloured furniture, within each area the function of each room is ‘coded black’. So in the dining area, the dining tables are darkly coloured. It gives one a sense of categorized order about the house. Look out for it in each area- it’s an accidental recurring theme.

Stepping into the living room, again things are kept simple. The prudent choice of a white leather sofa combines both comfort and easy maintenance and it helps brighten the room by reflecting off ambient light. This brightness is in turn nicely balanced by the dark themed media entertainment devices. And the sharp contrast of colours is mediated by the medium toned brown curtains which give the living room and earthy feel as well.

The highlight would be the divider separating the dining are from the living room. The plasma tv sits on this cleverly designed swivel wall which allows for 360 degrees rotation of the tv set, allowing one to view it while having a meal at the dining table, or simply chilling on the sofa in the living room. This clever design tv viewing capacities in 2 separate rooms for the price of only 1 tv!

Any newly weds with a busy schedule will appreciate their simple, functional and easy to maintain toilets. In the quest for simplicity again, aesthetics are not neglected.

The kitchen is designed again for simple cooking being rather basic. No point possessing appliances that would hardly be used, ask any experienced home maker and they’ll agree a good kitchen is a neat and tidy one, not a fanciful nonfunctional one. Here, the neat and trim basic kitchen set up fits nicely with the busy lifestyle of today’s ordinary couple with little time for extraordinary culinary feats.

To close, the inevitability of smaller new flats sit well for most couples so long as it’s easy to clean, cosy and comfortable. It’s very easy to get discouraged and give up on aesthetics with such space constraints but so long as you get a designer with a good sense of taste to help around, a nice cosy little pad for you and your sweetheart is more than possible.
