Article : Geometrical Spaces

Photos by Brilliant ID | Text by Edgar

Nestled in the newly developed Punggol Central, this HDB flat designed by Brilliant ID showcases the timeless contemporary modern style weaved into a compact space without compromising on the quality and depth of living space.

Entering the flat, one is immediately struck by how neat and uncluttered the flat is. With a clean colour palatte of white and black carefully softened with the use of warm lights on reflective surfaces, the living space appears widened without sacrifices to utility. Quirky and geometrically playful, the shoe cabinet stands out as well thought out, having well compartmentalised cabinets interspaced with a seat to put on your shoes and display areas for ornaments.

Alongside the shoe cabinet and against the mirror panelled wall is a large glass topped dining table surrounded by high backed chairs. The selection of chairs and tables with metallic support complements the theme well while the mirror serves its function to generate the illusion of space. Topping off the area is a porous lampshade which hangs stylishly on metal struts extended from the false ceiling.

The living area is juxtaposed against the rest of the room by a solid colours of purple, red and black with textured wallpaper and playful red and white cushions. The dark colours of the the wallpaper conveniently allows the use of regal purple curtains which would have looked out of place if placed by themselves. The television console area adopts a different tack with a continuation of light colours and the placement of an S-shaped display shelf. Avoiding the glare, a striped laminate backing was placed behind the flat screen television. Nestled quietly beside the console area is a water feature, great for relaxing and giving the living area that little bit of a resort feel while drawing attention to the glass lined cut out that draws attention to the uniquely designed study area.

The kitchen is a picture of utilitarian bliss with neat, whitewashed surfaces with easily cleanable laminate tops lined with elements of silver and grey to break the monotony. Delineating the kitchen from the living room is an extensive bar top counter area, perfect for quick bites in the morning.

Specially designed with space constraints in mind, a double sided wardrobe was place in the master bedroom to cave out a cosy workspace with storage for both books and clothes, Striking in its boldness and stylishness, this feature wardrobe offers the space and depth of two wardrobes while serving its function as a divider.

Meanwhile, the master bedroom toilet’s is likewise conceptualised with space constraints in mind, with the placement of the sink and mirror which serves as a divider and splash screen against the shower area. Tall vertically striped tiles give the illusion of height while giving a sense of no-nonsense orderliness.

Thoughtfully designed, this project by Brilliant ID shows how creative placement and careful thought can help shape a design space to make a space very much more livable.
