  1. Sushi is halal when mirin is not used and also when there's no contact with any non-permissable ingredients/tools/surfaces while preparing and serving the sushi. Usually they substitute mirin with sweet vinegar or something. Ya lor Bluberi....must focus study leh Btw, what course is Blueberi studying?
  2. Yup, with the mashed potatoes u can experiment...a lot! It took me abt two to three times to get it right. And yes, KFC did went ahead with the certification.....only MUIS and KFC knows the 'secret' recipe. Anyway, those eating establishments who applied and got the halal-cert, they cannot play punk anymore. To get halal-certification, it's an arduous process in which they have to ensure all prep areas, tool, utensils, appliances have to be cleaned and inspected according to Halal Certification Guidelines, declare all ingredients, tools, machinery, etc. MUIS is very strict on this. And have to have at least one Halal Liaison Officer per company, who has to fulfill certain requirements by MUIS. Once a consumer finds certain ingredients and preparation methods seemed questionable, straightaway can email or call MUIS hotline to complain, and surprise checks are carried out ASAP. That's why the halal-cert is valid only for one year, renewal subject to approval after surprise checks and complaints database. No joke leh......
  3. Ok, I'll ask my SILs for the putri salat recipe next weekend ya. Yup, Bengawan Solo one is very nice based on my friends' feedbacks. Just too bad though, they're not gonna apply for halal-certification due to certain critical ingredients in their famous kuihs. I think they're afraid that their taste/secret recipe will be compromised should they go ahead with halal-certification. For the mashed potatoes, there are several types and versions. Mainly it's either the "sinful" version (aka nicer taste but more fattening) or "not so sinful" version (aka healthier, less fattening, suitable for kids too). U can choose to steam or boil the skinned potatoes until cooked soft. Usually I use the washed-potatoes in a bag kind - for its whiteness and faster-to-cook properties, not the loose unwashed potatoes commonly used for curry. Mashed Potatoes (Sinful version) for 3-4 adults: - 2 bags of washed potatoes, skinned and boiled until soft - One Bulla Fresh Cream 45% fat in 200ML container - One block of unsalted or less salted butter - Ground black pepper, to taste - Sea salt, to taste Method: Boil or steam all the potatoes until cooked soft. When fully cooked, if boiling - drain off excess water from pot, and then put pot of potatoes back to stove and heat up gently & stir potatoes until all moisture dry up in pot. Turn off heat when done. Mash the potatoes while it is still in the pot, as the remaining heat is sustained. Pour in the Bulla Cream and drop in the butter, mash and stir together until smooth and no more lumps. Add in ground black pepper and sea salt, to taste. Serve warm. Mashed Potatoes (Not So Sinful version) for 3-4 adults: - 2 bags of washed potatoes, skinned and boiled until soft - One to two cups of fresh milk for smoothness (whole or skimmed, is up to you) - 3-4 tablespoons of virgin or extra virgin olive oil - Ground black pepper, to taste (For kids or tots, can opt this out) - Sea salt, to taste. Method: Same as the Sinful version. Brown Gravy (Chicken-based) for 3-4 adults: - One whole chicken, cut into smaller pieces, leave skin on. - 1-2 tablespoons of virgin olive oil. Method: Pan fry chicken pieces (with skin on) with a bit of olive oil, until brown. Remove cooked chicken pieces from pan/pot and slowly pour in corn flour (pre-mixed with plain water and stirred until smooth and no more lumps) on gentle heat (stove). Stir until boiled gently and lower heat, keep stirring until thicker consistency. When colour change slightly, sample abit to taste if need to add in salt. If salty enough, no need to add in any salt, as the sodium from the cooked chicken fat/oils are already salty enough. Pour into a bowl and serve warm. Can also reheat in slow, gentle fire or microwave for abt 1 minute. -- MSG-free cooking advocate --
  4. Hee hee..paisey..I usually cook simple meals like western (pan-fried chicken with mashed potatoes and steamed veggies, that kind or pastas). Even Assam Laksa I also dunno how to cook, let alone Rendang. For putri salat, it's usually my sisters-in-law (I got 6 of them), to me they're the experts in Malay dishes, pastries and kuih-kuih. If you want the recipe, I can try get it for u.
  5. Sure, no problemo My kitchen can become the central kitchen. The only thing that I don't have is a convection oven and electric batter/cake mixer. For halal meat e.g. chicken, I volunteer. Yup, the MUIS guideline on halal food is a gd one for reference. Next time if your workplace need to get halal-certified catering companies for buffet or parties, can just check the MUIS database.
  6. At least better than carrying me.....
  7. Hee hee...I can imagine if all of us in this cluster "ambush" the MP....he sure say "Ok Ok Ok lahh!"
  8. Wah...lucky u mention u don't eat beef. I'll take note of that ya. FYI, you can check this out Halal Consumers Guidelines should we have future gatherings/potlucks. Don't mean to sound fussy or anything, but just to ensure to avoid any misunderstandings when it comes to the halalness of food/drinks. For the urut, mine was abt $50 per session including bengkung (waist binding cloth), home-made jamu for consumption and herbs for bengkung (optional), massage and her transport. I took 14-days urut session, cost me abt $700 in all. But that rate was abt 3 yrs ago, unfortunately I misplaced her contact number liao. But fret not, I also got other lobangs for u: Wayan Retreat Balinese Spa - Mum's Corner and House of Traditional Javanese Massage - PostNatal Massage. Now I think could cost slightly more due to GST, etc. Usually for the first few days of urut sessions, they will come to your house bcos they know new mothers need lots of rest and not out-bound yet. But for follow-ups then can go to their shop, to continue the post-natal treatments. For post-natal massages, it's best to ask if the therapist is intensively trained in post-natal massage. This is important bcos different bodies got different threshold of pain and fatigue after childbirth. Be careful if the therapist insist that u continue the next urut session the very next day, even after the first urut session the next day u wake up and your body feel very heavy and like glued to the bed feeling. It happened to me, so my urut lady told my mom that she will only continue the next session two days after, to give my body ample time to recover abit and get stronger. Subsequently, the following urut sessions were continued on a daily basis until end of the agreed 14-day session. U might want to know that some therapists or urut ladies are capable of providing an extra service called "sengkak" (pronounced as - sng kak -), which is a method (for married ladies only) to massage the lower tummy area to "push" up the womb, usually done on the last day of a 7-day urut session. Its purpose is to space birth and minimise womb prolapse. But make sure that the therapist is trained very well in this, as this is a very old method that traditional mid-wives are specialised in. If the therapist or urut lady says she doesn't know or won't do it, don't take it personally as usually they know that if they make one wrong massage move to do the sengkak, then jialat liao.
  9. I never ever been to a 'meet-the-people" session before Wait skali I go alone, sure "frozen" one. Anybody else been to such sessions?

  12. Hi aczeta If I'm not wrong, u can try browse at Harvey Norman stores or Happiness Pte Ltd at 55 Jalan Besar (showroom & spare parts centre). If you're not sure yet abt which types of hobs to get, u can try check out this thread Hobs & Hood as well. Cheers!
  13. Bluberi, It's urut, not urat liao. Urut means massage. Urat means vein (eg. leaf vein, blood vein). Sure, no problemo ....in fact got many urut ladies and Javanese traditional urut companies out there. But must know how to select the right one lah After 1 month after giving birth, I lost abt 8kg leh after urut sessions and breastfeeding. But several months later, weight loss was very very slowly going down, bcos I ate like a bodybuilder leh, although I was breastfeeding exclusively. Until today I eat alot, bcos I have to chase my son round the house everytime have to put on his pull-ups, he likes to be naked. Heee yerrr...he very active lah!
  14. You're very welcome, neighbour!
  15. Can try All Well Trading at Sungei Kadut Street 1. Spoke to a Mr Low mid-last year over the phone, answered my questions abt their Australian Jarrah wood EzyDeck tiles. Pricing is slightly more, compared to the ones at Home-Fix or other plant nurseries in Bedok and Thomson Rd, I guess due to the easy-click on system. But I have to abort the idea of getting it for the main balcony, bcos with my kid around sure heart-ache. Haizzz...maybe when got more funds, plus my kid older enough, then can consider. One good thing abt this DIY timber deck tiles, it's easy to take off and rotate places. U can also check out their SolarPave tile, very swee! No need wiring/electricity.
  16. Hi raincole Frosted is the effect/finish, etching is the process - acid-etched or sand-blasted. The basic difference between acid-etched glass and sandblasted glass is that acid etching creates a smoother surface that is less likely to show up finger marks (unavoidably caused by natural oil on our fingertips). Real acid-etched and sandblasted glass is much more expensive than film and more time-consuming to install (glass panels are usually either completely replaced, or removed and treated off-site). The cheaper alternative will be the adhesive frosted film.
  17. Wah....u've got the authentic one lah, deathcoth Send her my regards....Sawadee kah..

  21. After all, we are all neighbours...so no worries...help is nearby Ya lor.....after 1.5 years, me & hubby realised we saved abt almost $2000+ from breastfeeding, excluding diapers, baby wellness checkups & jabs, etc. The post-natal urut (massage) sessions usually starts after 3 days post-birth for normal deliveries or 3 weeks after c-section deliveries. Jamu (herbs) is actually optional, it's up to individual. Wah shiok you know....I booked for a 14-days massage session last time. Every morning must shower first before every urut session. Very refreshing If u want the urut lady contact details, let me know ya.
