Where To Buy Woods, Timber, Planks, Plywoods, Laminated Sheets
YoloDIYReno replied to KayLan's topic in DIY Corner
Anyone know where I can get large sheets of self-adhesive high gloss white laminate for walls? Intend to use it as wallpaper for my walls to give it a futuristic look. -
Hi, Does anyone here have experience changing the new HDB wall socket? I used to change the wall socket of older HDB flats (just unscrew, replace wires, screw back) but the new HDB BTO flats uses a slightly different wall socket.. Can't seem to find any screwing point. Anyone know how to change it? Care to share? Hiring electrician to replace for $50 is a bit too much for me given that I supply the new power socket too.

I have tried buying lights direct from Taobao before but officially can't buy it because Taobao official forwarder does not support shipping LED lights. Talked to the online store owner and they suggest finding forwarding agents instead. Just ordered alll my lights using ezbuy yesterday and hoping all goes well as I paid about $80 for all the lights. Yes it's way cheaper than the many shops I asked in Jalan Besar even if the ezbuy delivery cost $20 later on... Don't know the actual price of delivery until their forwarder receives the goods. I bought switches directly from taobao. Search for "英标带USB插座面板英式13A插座" Mine even comes with self-enclosed usb ports so that dust won't fly in. Really a good buy.. Will be asking my friend to help install. If you are asking contractor to install, do check first before buying as not all contractors will install taobao stuff for you because they don't want to be held accountable if the goods has defects.

Don't mind if I crash this thread as my thread still awaiting approval since last night... I am also wondering if my contractor provide a fair quote... The full story is still pending approval but if you look at the prices, what do you think?

Based on my research.. can be as cheap as $0.50/ft for cheap China made 3mm kinds (find on carousell) without installation to very expensive 6mm premium vinyl click-lock system made in Italy/Europe by renowned local company. If you ask me which is best value, I also don't know as each vinyl flooring quality differs and cheapest doesn't mean best. Plus if you count installation, have to look at worksmanship and look through hundreds of Facebook pages/sieve through potentially fake reviews to find the 'best' one. End of the day, I think it's more or less like a gamble. Just find one, pray doesn't chop you too much carrot and hope he does his job properly. Now if you ask me the average price for a 4-room "average" 5-mm click lock vinyl tiles + installation cost about how much? I would say about $3.5k as that's the amount I pay.

Read here to avoid the same mistakes with contractor

Thanks for this amazing thread! A pity I signed with a contractor for my kitchen renovation before I came across this... Will be more vigilant the next time before I commence works for other parts of my house. -
Is this contractor quote considered reasonable?
YoloDIYReno replied to 21stDecember's topic in Renovation Packages
Hi, can you pm me the contractor's number? -
I recently met a general contractor online and decide to engage them as their office is very near my house. After their initial quote, I decide to scale down the scope of works as I can't find much independent reviews online and I have a pretty tight budget to work with. My current requirements as follows: HDB New Type BTO 4-room Need to have water heater storage tank in service yard with pipes connecting to Kitchen and common toilet pipes. Need to install Kitchen sink (600mm++), Kitchen Hob, Kitchen Hood (chimney type), Oven, Dishwasher (free standing type). Lower cabinets only. No upper cabinets. No additional walls, tiles, etc as I don't see a need for very good aesthetics. Just need a functional kitchen. Windows (privacy if possible) and grilles at service yard as the orientation of my service yard expose my kitchen to people walking pass. After signing, the contractor told me that might be additional cost which wasn't factor in: Extension of sink support to include dishwasher to prevent leaks - $300 Inlet & Drainage works for dishwasher - $120 Kitchen Hood installation - $80 Additional 15amp socket for oven/hob to be quoted by their in-house electrician - ??? Soft-hinges only for casement door (EXCEL), drawers are normal type. No BLUM. Also, there are no clauses for workmanship warranty, schedule, etc.. although the contractor did assure me 1 year workmanship warranty and provide the schedule separately. It's just quotation which I signed + pay deposit. While I wouldn't cancel as there will be penalty of 30%, if the pricing is not good, then I will probably need to get them to finish the task stated in the quotation and get another contractor to settle the rest if they are over-pricing their services. Would like to hear from the rest given that I'm not in this industry.
