Looking for good contractors? Click here for your request

Yes, I have timber flooring for my current home. 6cm x 120cm strips. Timber makes the bedrooms look luxurious and beautiful but they are expensive.

Over time, these strips will shrink and you will see gaps between these gaps. And that's when you will need to call in the timber floor installer to use matching wood putty to fill up the gaps again.

If you want very good installation, you need to ask your ID to make sure that the timber floor installer allows time for the timber strips to shrink before vanishing the timber floor.

And ask for matte vanish for an elegant look.

!!

Good question. Here's a website that shows swatches of different types of wood species, and also describes their most common uses. http://eth.com.sg/default.asp

I believe the most common recommendation by contractors is Burmese teak.

I honestly didn't specify the species that I wanted. I left it to my main contractor to choose for me. I was however particular about the colour and varnish. I didn't want too much red in the wood stain, and I made sure I asked for matte varnish. Glossy varnish looks cheap.

I think for quick advice and discussion, call Wood Doctor to talk to a sales guy.

You might want to know that the broader & longer the timber strip, the more expensive it is. Depending on the area that you want the timber flooring, get advice as to what is the best size. These days, most installers use the tongue and groove method of installation. Which I believe helps to reduce the risks of timber strips popping up or warping.

Mine are only 6cm strips. I think 10 - 12 cm wide strips are actually more elegant.

By the way, I replaced the timber on my internal stairs, and each of them are 26cm wide (width of one step on the stairs), and the cost came up to S$6K. Very ex.

Anyone has a contact for reasonable pricing for Teak timber flooring? Is it cheaper to source from manufacturer or obtain from ID?

I am intending to do the flooring for 2 bedrooms, the dimensions are 1) 3.5m X 3m and 2) 3m X 4m

Pls advise.

My undersanding is, parquet means short strip timber laid in a pattern. The longer stripes would be called timber flooring. IIRC, it is $5-$7 psf for Burmese teakwood parquet. Indo parquet is about $5. The longer timber strips would be $10 and above. I went to both Jason Parquet and Wood Doctor. Wood Doctor gave a packaged price, quite expensive. We were attended by Mr New from Jason Parquet, very nice chap who gave us a special price for the Brazilian teakwood. Told us he was clearing stock, I guess we got lucky, asked him the right question at the right time. :sport-smiley-018:

Just a tip here:

Calculate the floor area yourself using your floor plan. VERY OFTEN, and I mean VERY OFTEN, the usual practice is to inflate your floor area so that they can charge more.... :sport-smiley-018:

anyone know what is the price, psf for burmese teak flooring? Thanks.

:dancingqueen:

For Burma or Indonesia teak flooring, try Nature Wood Pte Ltd.

Tel : 63630030.

They are specialised in teak flooring in Singapore.

The price is subjected to the followings ..

the thicker it is the more expensive.

the wider it is the more expensive.

the longer it is the more expensive.

now. comes to the part of what is the difference between indo and burma teak.

Indonesia Teak. (tectonas grandis)

Mainly plantation teak. this means they are planted by the Dutch in the 1800s.

Now managed by Indonesia government.

Trees are chopped down at 30 years old to 50 years old.

Hence, considerable young tree.

The color is much ligher and the grains are much further apart.

the tree grows bigger faster and hence the annual rings(grains) further apart.

There is not much difference from Burma Teak if you use parquet. small piece.

Price wise, indonesia teak is slightly cheaper than burma teak.

Burma Teak (tectonas grandis)

Same species as indonesia teak. but they are grown in the wild forest.

hence, there are trees as old as 500 years old.

the oil in the tree are much richer and the color tends to be yellowish brown.

the teak oil in the wood can prevent termite attack.

the color are mainly yellow to brown ... but more brownish compared to indonesia teak.

the rings are narrower as the trees grow slowly without fertilisers.

The reason for the high price is because it is a much older tree and it takes longer time to grow.

usually chop down between 50years to 200 years old.

However, both are still teak. the only differences is the soil condition and the number of years grown before they are chopped down.

hope this will give you some insight into teak.

By the way, Brazillian teak is NOT teak. it is cumaru. you can check this in the internet by typing brazillian teak. it is supposed to be cheaper than teak.

Moderator,

Can wood specialist companies market their serivces on this forum?

I seem to see Mr Wood Varnish appearing in all different forums marketing their services. I hope no offence is taken by my remark but it doesn't seem ethical to me that someone can market its own services on this forum.

Also, can anyone share their experience working with Mr Wood Varnish, other than So Confused who appears to be part of the marketing team of Mr Wood Varnish? Happy to hear your experience other than from Mr Wood Varnish himself!!

Like all other genuine customers, I don't want to be conned!
