A home robbery/house break in could happen at any place or time – which has prompted a responsible netizen to take the initiative to teach us how we can prevent such a thing from happening to us and loved ones. And while reported crime rates in Malaysia have been on a steady decline for the past few years, home robberies are still a legit concern for homeowners.

Also - though robbers and thieves typically prefer to just focus on stealing whatever expensive electronics and jewellery they find - things can quickly escalate into a life threatening situation if they decide to arm themselves with weapons in the event they are ever discovered or feel threatened. There is evidence that shows that robbers too often resort to violence if they feel trapped.

Realising that it would be a big help to people everywhere, an experienced CCTV technician on Facebook has decided to share his 5 best tips on how to prevent a home invasion in Malaysia, loss of property and, possibly, loss of life!

1.     Make it Appear that Someone is Home

To significantly improve the chances of deterring robbers bent on looting your home, turn on the TV or radio. Leaving the lights on won’t suffice. Also, note that most break-ins occur sometime around 12.30pm to 2.30pm or from 12am to just before breaking of first light (basically when they think the occupants are at work or sleeping), so step up precautionary measures particularly at those times.

2.     Trim Oversized Vegetation around Your House

Trimming bushy plants and low-hanging trees around your house will deny robbers places to hide and conceal themselves while they observe the home and its occupants, waiting for the best time to strike. Removing this source of concealment will, additionally, make it harder for them to retreat unobserved if they try to run away.

3.     Park your car in the front porch and activate it to scare robbers away

Robbers and cat burglars are extremely afraid of loud noises that will bring attention to where they areso if you spot them skulking around in your house you can activate the alarm in your car to immediately spook them and call neighbours to your aid.

4.     Report Suspicious Individuals to Security or the Community Watch

Report suspicious persons, particularly strangers and non-residents, who are consistently present around your area who and/or don’t seem to have any business being there. Chances are is that that person travelling back and forth your street or is idly hanging around your area is doing it to plan for a robbery.

5.     Install a Home CCTV and Make it Visible to Observers

This may seem counter-intuitive at first, but installing a home CCTV that’s clearly visible to observers (including would-be robbers) is more effective a deterrence than one that’s hidden and out of sight. In fact, a clearly visible CCTV camera is so such a threat to robbers that it scares them off - whether or not the camera is turned on! No robber wants to be caught on camera. Of course, it's best to install one that does work...
