Mandy & Lincoln - Renovating Our First Home
mmycheng replied to mmycheng's topic in Reno t-Blog Chat
Yup. The electricians came down today and finally got the faulty sockets replaced... after giving 'feedback' to my ID, the electrician even offered to buy me a wireless door bell as the existing one has problems with the internal wiring. My hb bought the Pioneer Kuro 42" at 50% off for the 'display' set. I'm saddened by the news that a fellow Sg was killed by terrorists in Mumbai... life is so precious and yet these people treat it as if it's nothing. -
How come you created a new post? Haha... at first I thought someone else had the exact same design as you only to realise that they are both you...

My ID helped me settle liao and the elctrician will DEFINITELY come tmr...he even called me twice (once yesterday and once today) to confirm that he's coming, he still didn't apologise for the mistakes but oh well I guess that's his way of making up for his mistakes. Yesterday went with hb to SITEX...first day of the fair so not really that crowded. Went home feeling very poor cos we bought 2 TVs...faint ... To console myself, I will say that we got a very good deal on what we bought...haha... 自己安慰自己... Will post the pics when the TVs are installed next week. -
I think both your toilets but I find the second one nicer ehe ... but it means the shower screen will have a sliding door right? Is this good for showers as the rollers on the top may get worn down easily?...really not sure Most I know are swing open doors like in your 1st drawing. I like the 2nd design for your kitchen better but I prefer the colour scheme for the first drawing, i.e. darker brown laminates on the bottom and white on the top. Haha...I also can't really see any big difference with the wardrobe designs except that one is brown and the other black laminate around the edges.

Hehe...your fireplace looks cute already...
-
Hi, your designs are very classy and sleek. Good choice! I have to agree with the rest on the balcony not having a door though... unless you install grills or windows at the balcony??
-
Haha...if you can only view samples at the office, the touching probably can be done discreetly... but to whip out a damp cloth and to start cleaning...people think you siao one ah! haha Better put a disclaimer on my tips: Please ONLY try this at home!

Yesterday I 'showed face' with my electrician... My problem lies with the 3-pin sockets...Not 1, not 2 but 6!! sockets spoilt in the course of staying in my house for only 3 days... sighz...My plugs couldn't go in the sockets at all... that's annoying because 4 of them are in my study room and 2 in my kitchen next to the cooker hob. Now I cannot boil water or cook rice. So, anyhow, my electrician turned up and I told him where the problem points were... as expected, he shifted the blame on us saying that we anyhow plug into the socket and spoiling it as a result... said stuff like we are supposed to plug in the top part first before the bottom 2 goes into the socket...what bull**** I didn't bother to defend myself and so I just said, in that case, please try EVERY SINGLE SOCKET in my house to make sure. So he bo bian and then went round one by one... every one that was faulty he repeated the same thing, putting the blame on us... I just looked at him with an expresionless face... In the end, he stopped his 'nonsense' and said he will get the problem points replaced FOC. At first he needed 1 whole week to get the job done but I said no because that means I will have no means to cook or use my computers properly for so long... so I insisted by saturday and he said ok... My hb say he's the 'chao kuan' type and sure won't turn up by sat one... we see how... I have complained about his shoddy workmanship to my ID before...for example his trunking always cut too short and leave exposed wires, he broke 2 of my kitchen tiles, he installed my doorbell with 1 battery short so it's not working and he forgot to install a LAN point even though we paid for it... luckily the other team of workers doing carpentry and painting are very nice and they also help him 'cover up' by sealing his exposed wires and all that... Anyway, I will see how my ID settles this... I don't want to get upset over such stupid things. -
Haha...I see you went Karcher shopping... If your budget allows, buy the one with the one with the better air filter and rubber protector around the sides to prevent bumps. As for the size of the bag, I dunno... personally I don't like to have bags that are too big cos it means you store more dirt inside for a longer time... somehow feels yucky to me. Anyway, for the bags, I paid $17 for a pack of 10 for my model at HN. Not sure if it's the cheapest. If got cheaper lobang let me know. Cheers!

The metallic laminates look delicious! Wish I had seen them for my home... Anyway, just to share a few tips from my experience: 1. For solid surface, try to choose lighter colours with more speckles or patterns -- this way, scratches in future won't be obvious. If you have to take a dark colour, choose one with some patterns. 2. For laminates, try the following -- touch, touch, touch...does it easily leave fingerprint marks? Also, dust is more obvious on smooth and dark coloured laminates. Personally, I prefer those that are matt and slightly textured. I have a smooth, shiny black laminate for my living console and MBR bedside tables... everyday I see a layer of dust...I can wipe everyday but the dust goes back on again very quickly, or at least it's more obvious...sighz... 3. The samples are a bit small but you can try this. Use a damp cloth and wipe over the ones you like. Let it dry and see which ones leave watermark stains... try not to choose those cos they will be harder to clean.

Yeah... my sofa is full leather in white...I had to tell my guests who have very new jeans to sit on a cloth otherwise the colour will run. My dog's paw prints can also be seen all over now... Am thinking of buying some sort of leather cleaner to remove the stains. Have you tried that?

Welcome! Looking forward to see your transformation. Found an ID/contractor yet?
-
Oh dear... after reading your various entries...I can sincerely feel your frustration. I think you did the right thing by stopping his services as it will only lead to more problems in the future. Do you want a contact for ID or contractor to do your kitchen cabinets and shoe rack? You can try my ID or source around the various people others in the forum have used and found reliable. It's peak season now for renovation so prob best to avoid very popular ones as they may have a lot of jobs on hand or may not want to entertain smaller jobs. I hope you solve your problem soon. Take care.

Hi, here are pics of my wardrobe. It measures 20ft in total and is flushed from floor to ceiling. The full length mirror opens up to more shelving inside. Below the vanity mirror, there is a pull out accessories drawer. I am still in the midst of unpacking my things and so far, I would say that the wardrobe is just nice for me and my husband... On hindsight, I would have done the following differently: 1. Remove the bottom layer of open shelves - initially wanted to put shoes there but my shoerack turned out to be more than enough 2. Have a smaller vanity mirror - from waist height upwards enough already so that more of the bottom space can be used as extra cupboard space 3. Install sliding doors with full length mirrors for all sections except for the vanity table. This way, I can prevent my clothes from getting dusty easily... but of course... this will increase the costing by a lot more.

Home & Furnishing: The Kitchen Cabinet Story

Hi, mine is grey with yellow. Backing is black glass, solid surface is black with white and silver speckles. Don't do a full black solid surface top as scratches will be VERY obvious. -

Hehe...actually I bought the low end Karcher model... it's a simple machine with a powerful motor for good suction. I figured I rather spend the money on a simple, reliable German brand than pay the same amount for a more fancy model from other less reliable brands. For the other Karcher models with better air filters and more functions, you will have to shell out at least $400!! -
I'm happy to see that things are getting better. Say strong and I'm sure things will turn out fine. We humans are a resilient lot and often we don't know it until crisis strikes. Take care ok?

Hi BunBun, yes it's a Karcher. The model I bought is a wet and dry vacuum. In the dry, it can vacuum hard surfaces and carpets. The brushes provided are suitable for carpet use. As for the wet function, it can suck up water and people have used it to clean wet places like toilets, small pools, water fountains etc. The machine has separate compartments for wet and dry dirt. It's not expensive. I got it for $169 at HN. -
Very nice! I like it! $20 is a steal...have been oggling at christmas trees in shopping centres but they all cost a bomb... maybe I should try the 2nd hand forums like u did....hehe

Hi, Sharing pics of my glass doors. This full glass one is for my WIW. The two half pieces which slide over one another is for my MBR toilet...I replaced my old HDB bifold door as it would knock against my vanity top when fully opened.

Hi klip-klap, Don't worry...I am sure you can still have your green house through other purchases of furnishings like curtains, cushion covers, plants, paintings etc.

Only 1 of them is cordless and it's also a DECT phone. The other is not. The cordless I placed in the study room and can move around with it easily. The other is at the bedside so stationary also nevermind. I got them for 40 plus at HN. -

Thanks shogen79, I did what you advised. Hopefully, the pipe won't get choked so easily. Also, my plumber came down yesterday to rectify the problem...at first we wanted to drill a hole through the bottom of the cabinet but he told us that we can remove the top part of the pipe, move it aside and then remove the bottom part. This way, no holes needed. And guess what?? Our plumber turned out to be the boss's father (i.e. father of HomeSuccess's boss)!! shocking right?! So all these while I was talking to this uncle who actually is a multi-millionaire...and he was like getting down on his hands and feet, getting wet and grimy doing my plumbing...such a hardworking man at his age! Anyway, as promised, here are my two latest purchases for the home. We used the vacuum today and I must say it is very good! Simple yet effective, the wheels are very easy to turn too. The phones are ok too, just wanted something simple and inexpensive. -
The single tile idea will make your house look sleek but I agree that you have to do your sums carefully. The pebble wash near the door sounds like a practical solution.
