  1. I talked to a F&B Manager about installing kitchen Hood in my HDB flat, and he said many Singaporean home owners commit the mistake of not making sure that ventilation duct are installed to the back or top of the kitchen exhaust fan to vent it outside of the kitchen. Thereby making the kitchen hood useless in many cases and spoiling faster. In some ductless units, the kitchen cabinets get very sticky and oily too. I have been googling about this and saw that he is right : I am going to talk to the ID firm about this, but would like to hear about any others who have experience in building the ducting requirements in their HDBs. Would it be allowed under HDB regulations?
  2. hi kim76! i love your kitchen cabinet layout, but have a few questions for you as i am in the midst of cracking my head to confirm the cabinet layout with my ID: 1. What appliance is being placed above your inbuilt oven? Is that empty space for microwave oven? 2. The wall tiles and floor tiles are the same homogenous tiles or ceramic? Can u tell me where u sourced them? I love the color u chose! Very earthy and beautifully sized. 3. Did u fix a lighting under the top kitchen cabinet and if so, what is lighting fixture u used? thanks kim76 if u can answer the above, i am seeing my ID on Monday and have to firm up the quotation then and look at the tiles already..
  3. ]My ID firm is a registered Pte Ltd company, but not yet registered with the HDB due to a one-year rule it needs to fulfill. It's a new firm less than 1 year old, they said they will apply for HDB licence for the works using another licensee's name. I decided to mention this in the agreement so that it's clear cut in case of disputes in later years -- HDB said they will only look to the registered licensee to make good any problem with the renovations, not the ID firm even if ID firm later get it's own registration.
  4. Due to design changes of the new kitchen cabinets we are building, we cannot use this powerful free-hanging chimney extractor for our kitchen renovations. The brand is Turbo Incanto, Made in Italy. It is brand new and still in the box. Original price $799. Asking for $300. Model no C593N/90F 220-240V/Vac 50/60Hz
  5. One of the older forummer Reiki did that ... instead raised kerb, they had a ramp that drops down to a drop to the bathroom floor level.. are u planning to do that for both your bathrooms??? I am also planning that too.
  6. They are nice! Very Ikea.. Are they good for the shower area?
  7. The ID at ***** is also suggesting the same idea of plastering over existing kitchen wall tiles with cement screed and plaster.. I am wondering how our fellow forummers who did that are doing with their kitchen walls???
  8. I just got a quote from their project manager, Sam Tien.. so far, i must say they aren't ID firm, more like direct contracting... i saw their work for a neighbor, the floor work looks fine, but the kitchen cabinets were a cock-up....
  9. A contractor told us that detergent waste water flowing over homogenous tiles will corrode the tiles over time and make it turn into black hue? Has anyone come across this?? Thanks!
  10. i loved reading your journey to your new home in the East! i live in the East! And i can say ... East is relaxing.. especially when u are near the Loyang, Changi Prison areas... quiet, serene and tranquil... ehehehe
  11. really? glass backsplash costs as much as wall tiles? so what type of paint do u recommend for the kitchen walls that won't have this problem that matt walls suffer???
  12. is it only glossy tiles that have this problem with watermarks and dust stains??? a neighbor's brother who is a contractor advised my mom to choose "teh cherng" for tiles, what's that in english? ceramic?
  13. I noticed this too from their namecard which says idealhouse.com.sg. Does this mean we cannot lodge complain against them if they aren't HDB registered?? Anyone dealt with Kevin Yap before?
  14. yeah, like for mine, the alternative door entrance can only come from my master bedroom, and we already have our MBR toilet there...
  15. I was quoted $45 by Elmark contractor for installation today...
  16. i thought about hanging bamboo curtains which would at least let in some air and light....
  17. even if u decide to do gardening on the balcony, u need to check the sunlight conditions... does the space get enough light for the plants or will u just have mould on them?? i often wonder why did the HDB build these kinds of balcony which become "dead" spaces in so many homes? why didn't they turn it into proper terraces like those in southern europe where people could actually sit out in the afternoons and cool off and have a meal on the terraces... the size of terraces are bigger there obviously, enough to even fit a barbecue!
  18. Hi, my flat is a corner unit, where one of the bedrooms and the living room windows faces west. In the afternoons, the afternoon sun heats up the wall and the retained heat is tremendous... you cannot basically sit in that bedroom unless u have the aircon on. The living room similiarly gets alot of heat coming through the windows. Also the living room faces a school's play compound. Is there any tips and ideas on how to reduce the noise level from the school? As well as heatproof the wall of the bedroom with maybe wall-paper? Will wall-paper adhesive withstand daily heat? Or should i have to put in a false wall as a means to put some insulation between wall and room? tx...
  19. That's good to know this so i can check with the IDs... when we do the planning.
  20. hey zhiz, can u tell me what's Opennet? I live overseas but have a flat in Tampines which i am going to renovate soon..
  21. Has anyone got bamboo flooring for their homes??? Any comments on their wear and tear, maintenance and repair issues? Are they suitable for the humidity in Singapore?? Just saw the blogsite of a local bamboo floor supplier here, and wanted to find out if anybody tried this environmentally friendly floor option?? http://www.starbamboo.com/

  23. I hv the same problem for the common toilet, and am planning this to build a glass wall or half concrete wall divider to demarcate and keep the WC and sink areas dry, while the shower floor area will have a drop. It will be strange to walk straight into a wet shower area, but at least a dry area can be maintained..
