  1. Sounds nice, can't wait to see it all come together. Do post the pics when it's up!
  2. Haha, your painter salah, it's not pink at all. You'll love it! Nice and bright I'll add another wise saying that I always hear: "Happy Wife, Happy Life"
  3. very colourful indeed haha. how did they manage to feel relaxed with all those vibrant colours in their face?
  4. hi rxgn, on the contrary we actually made better use of the space because there used to be 2 fat pipes there and the shower system was on the opposite side. By boxing up the pipes and extending the wall slightly towards the door, we managed to relocate the shower system to the side with the box up, freeing up the other side. From there, we simply asked for two holes to be cut into the wall (which is actually cement board) so that we can place our shampoo and soap there without having to drill those racks into the wall. amen to that, haha. Now I really can't wait for the furniture to come in. Thanks for the assurance! Hi Skorian, yes it's the HERF from Ev0rich - Durban Oak colour. They are using allure indeed, they just don't refer to it as such when they first introduce it.
  5. Actually the biggest problem I have with the skirting is that it disturbs the flow between our charcoal accent wall and the floor cos it's a different colour all together! Now we are thinking of whether to paint over it (which defeats the purpose of having a skirting) or just removing it altogether. sigh. decisions.
  6. thanks for the feedback PTopaz, my wife will be very glad to hear that! She thinks the tiles look "ghastly and hideous" in the pictures you see, she's overseas now and is only able to view the tiles through pictures. Too bad my camera can't capture the correct colour.
  7. ok found it! We used a white from Nippon Paint called Snow Flakes (code 1164) - it was the brightest white available from the selection. Loving the choice! tell me about it, feels like they ran out of the colour and just gave me something else and passed it off as 'normal' I actually don't like skirting, but for practical reasons (mopping etc), we decided to get it. Really can't stand the colour of it now. Paint paint paint!
  8. Hey claypot, it's finally your turn! Congrats on starting the renovation process. Which ID did you engage in the end?
  9. thanks! I'll check and let you know? I can't remember off the top of my head but it was a bright shade of white as opposed to cream.
  10. Tiling by Evorich So Evorich came down yesterday to install our flooring for the rooms. Here are some thoughts on that: - We hadn't thought at all about the orientation of the tiles until the Evorich installer called me up. I had to rush down to our unit to ensure that we laid it the way it should be laid, which is horizontal relative lengthwise to the unit (same as kitchen). - The skirting was actually of a vastly different colour (see below) than the tile. When I called up the Evorich salesperson, he mentioned that it was the closest they had and everyone had used it without complaint. Any thoughts? How can it be that they don't have skirting which is at least of a similar colour? Whatever the case, we think the skirting kindda disrupts the look of the rooms so we should be painting over them. - It appears that our contractor's tiler did not do a great job cement screeding the master bedroom where the wall had been hacked. As a result, the floor feels uneven in parts there, and creates a hollow noise when walking over. Getting our contractor down to rectify this and then relay the Evorich tiles. - Colour of the tiles: we chose Durban Oak for the colour of our tiles and it seems that it looks very different under sunlight and particularly in camera images. Think the colour rendering of my smartphone camera is not terribly accurate, resulting in an almost purplish hue *EEKS*. The wife wasn't pleased at all with the look of the tiles when I showed her the pics, but I assured her that it would work out fine with all the furnishings in. Does anyone else feel the same way, as in all the tiles seem out of place until the furniture actually comes in? Anyway, more pics of our place with the tiles up.
  11. welcome to renotalk cooknchill, from your handle I'm guessing you love to do both glad to also see you're adopting the scandinavian and industrial style mix! It will turn out fabulous I'm sure. Will stay tuned for your updates.
  12. Having a smaller wardrobe could actually be a good this - buy less, hoard less Quality, not quantity as they say! Oh yes, thanks for the lead on Best Light. Will check out the place the next time I head in. Good luck on your purchases this week!
  13. Hmm 1.5k amortised over the number of years we will be using the wiw is fine I guess, but you're right about the inconvenience and dust etc! Well, we've got 10-12 years to prepare ourselves mentally for this, so I think we'll be fine!
  14. Yes I think our ID did mention this problem of wastage, but I'm the 1200 x 1200 sized tiles will look gorgeous. $7-13 is really ex! But if your living area is not huge then I guess it's still ok.
  15. wah 9 am, that's really early. We were fortunate enough not to be stuck in too long of a jam when we went in at 1 pm. I was there yesterday to pay a second visit to Starworld lighting at Jalan Rosmerah. We didn't buy enough lights the first time around unfortunately. But guess what, they ran out of stock of the particular downlight that we previously bought! We were supposed to get 4 more downlights but they only had 1, so we drove around Permas Jaya trying to locate a similar piece but no one had it or was also out of stock. Looks like I'm going to have to buy it locally at a higher price. We also chanced upon this bedframe and mattress shop, ANZ Home Furniture around the area and apparently they are the local dealers for Dunlopillo mattresses. They had some pretty good CNY deals going on, but we have already bought our mattress, so no room for regret. The other couple that I went with are considering, and if you haven't already gotten yours, you may want to check them out. Where is hwa ann? Are their prices ok and how's the quality of their lights? Heard for quite alot of shops in JB, prices are cheap but the lights don't last very long.
  16. hey iceage, it definitely is a case of enjoy now, pay for it (dearly) later. Much like purchasing a car if you ask me haha. It's always difficult finding a balance isn't it, between luxury and practicality. In this case, luxury won the day. Hopefully practicality doesn't come back and bite us too hard in the a$$ later down the road. We'd better spend more time in our WIW now then, fully amortise the utility and satisfaction we paid for. Do you know how much it costs to erect a 10 ft concrete wall? At least we can prepare ourselves mentally to pay for it when the time comes (if it does).
  17. Morning all, hope everyone's weekend was a good one. Spent yesterday in JB buying lights for the place Songz, we have received similar reactions from the older generation, because cement screed was considered a poor man's way of tiling in the past I suppose? Haha But if you really like it you'll have to convince your mom by showing pictures of how nice this industrial/scandi style can be. hey diva79, thanks for the tip! I didn't even know you need to apply a grouting seal, thought since we'd chosen cement screed tiles we would have already rid ourselves of the maintenance issue. But I'll ask our ID about this. Thanks ya. most welcome! Along the lines of what Danmify mentioned in his last post, do check out a few other stores just to make sure that you've seen the entire range of options. You never know what better tiles you may come across. Trust that you will find the perfect one for you. Wow the black graphite tile sounds interesting. Did you manage to snap any pictures? Also, some people have mentioned that Rice Field's prices are more expensive, did you find this to be the case? Initially we wanted the bigger 1200 mm x 1200 mm tiles because that would mean less grouting lines, but our ID advised against it. On hindsight it could have been because he was afraid that his tiler might find it too difficult to lay in a HDB flat as opposed to a big bungalow where the floor area is larger? Hmm...
  18. PTopaz, we got the tiles at Soon Bee Huat at Toh Guan. Managed to find the code from the picture, just tell them the cement screed tile with code number: HT-AT6004. Just hope that they have stock cos another forumer tried to get the same tile but they didn't have it in the lighter shade, so she got the darker shade one instead. good luck and can't wait to see it up in your living room. for the other cement screed tiles that I showed you above, they were from a variety of other shops along balestier - hafary, lian seng hin etc.
  19. always good to do research btw, even for cement screed tiles there are many to choose from among all the tile shops. See below pic for example - got a lot of different marks and colours. Ours isn't even in the pic Take your time to select the one which you feel suits the cement screed look that you envision. Tried to PM you the cost but your mailbox is full! Anyway, the cost shouldn't vary too much - laying our tiles was $7 psf, which included a tile selection of up to $3.
  20. hi edelweissgarden, welcome to renotalk. Your space is huge!! You must have paid a bomb for it. Anyway, nice 3d drawings, and I am intrigued by the clear crystal white glass and am considering using it for our kitchen backsplash. Do you mind pm me the cost difference p/ft between the usual green tinge glass and the crystal white glass? Thanks!
  21. congrats plainsharon! hope overall it was a wonderful process for you
  22. Hi PTopaz! You will not regret the choice. Sometimes I still can't believe how identical it looks to cement screed (minus the grouting lines) without the required maintenance. When will you be starting your reno? Be sure to blog about your progress ya?
  23. hi danmify, this is the clearest picture I have now of the living room tiles. The 3d drawing isn't the most accurate as our ID outsources it to someone else, so pardon the inaccuracies. Anyway, our floor grouting is currently grey in a shade which matches our cement screed lookalike tiles. We wanted a seamless look across the floor to get the feel of real concrete screed, but having said that, since it is homogeneous tiles it is impossible for it to be 100% even in terms of colour. Still, we think our contractor did a pretty good job with it. Just before laying the tiles, our ID asked us to come down so that the tiler could mix the grouting on the spot and show us the actual colour. I suppose your contractor will be able to do that for you too. As for the tile itself, it comes straight edged, and I doubt the tiler will be able to do a 45 deg cut since it would be quite inconsistent I can imagine. For the grouting thickness, if I'm not wrong it's about the thickness of a 10 cent coin. Hope this helps
  24. Glad to hear that your reno concluded successfully after a long wait. Actually sometimes it isn't a bad thing to have a long reno, cos it really gives you time to browse for stuff to buy instead of buying the wrong thing in a hurry. That's what I've come to realize and "appreciate" I guess. I'm actually pretty curious as to how it is like to work with Mr K. Is he very friendly? Gives lots of suggestions? Willing to try new things etc?
