Hi tarzanboy, Sorry I haven't actually bought it yet. We saw it at Gain City Sungei Kadut though.

Hi foxygal! Yeah my husband is also slightly uncomfortable with the idea of an Ikea kitchen, though I really believe that certain pieces in the Ikea range are different in terms of level of flimsiness. For example, I've had the PAX series for a while now and they are really hardy, but the Billy series 80cm wide is not that great (40cm wide is okay). I've even been able to pass down my Ikea bedframe and mattress to my niece after using it for years and it's holding up fine. It's a matter of knowing what in Ikea is okay and what is not good. So far, my data gathering from people who actually own Ikea kitchens seem to indicate it's about the same probability of failing as any other ID/contractor created kitchen (you run a risk with carpentry as well) so I figured why not. Buying stuff before we get our house is a bit of a dream right now. We're probably only going to move in around June-ish so that's 6 months more of trying to store it somewhere in my parents-in-law's place lol.

Hi Changbp! Actually the current range does have acrylic/laminate (or at least non-veneer non-wooden) wood-style countertops! They only have the Saljan series online but if you go to the actual Ikea store there are quite a few. Still trying to debate with myself whether to get the wooden ones or just the wood like ones. I'm actually quite curious about this Ikea-cabinet-need-flat-walls issue. We are going to be redoing the kitchen almost completely and thought that it's just a matter of running the plumbing and electrical wires at the leg area and then finding spots to pull it up to the countertop, is this not the case? I've also seen someone build a false wall for this.

Old flats are sometimes the best, but also sometimes such a drain on the wallet! Everything must go hahaha oh well. Yeah fortunately or unfortunately for us, most of the places don't hold pieces for that long so we've not bought much yet. Our budget also had to go up quite a bit! But hopefully with our chosen ID/contractor it can be slightly closer to our original budget than our raised one. For us, we preferred not to get carpentry (I've had bad experiences with carpentry and would much rather get non-built-in furniture) but also had to give up buying certain pieces till phase II, or phase III lol. But because we don't intend to get carpentry, doing a phased approach for furniture is actually possible.

Ooh! Haha I'm with you on this! But how did you manage to buy your furniture so early? Most places we asked would only hold it for us for 2 to 3 months only...

Actually my ideal kitchen was indeed blue and gold but not even sure whether it's possible here! Picked my second choice of black /dark brown fronts and brass instead with wooden top but I sometimes go back and swoon at the picture of the blue cabinet doors!!

Hi hellofromtheotherside!! Haha oh gosh although I wouldn't say my theme is bohemian but my intended kitchen theme looks so much like yours?? I'm also a big fan of Apartment Therapy but perhaps not a big fan of vacuuming carpets! At the end of the day I feel like our house is really more themeless and based a lot on practicality (rounded corners, materials that last, no open shelves so no need to dust, darker materials/grout for areas where we don't have to worry as much about it getting dirty) but we also love darker wood, eclectic furniture and pops of colour! Though for us pops of colour will be more teal and yellow, some purple and blue. Looking forward to your place!

Alternatively, maybe try a sliding door instead of a swing door for your entrance into the toilet? Maybe slide towards your vanity if towards the right is not possible (I'm guessing those are pipes the box with the X on it). You mentioned your vanity pipes are in but the actual vanity isn't yet right? Can mount slightly away from the wall so that the sliding door can fit inside?

Hi twinklecloud! Yeah I was thinking if you didn't want to feel so cramped you could just have one fixed shower screen (not L-shaped) because actually the spray from a showerhead/rainshower wouldn't go super far and at most you need a screen to shield the sidespray onto your WC or your vanity. Also less glass to have to clean. For us, we are keeping the original configuration of the MBR bathroom so we are just sticking the shower area in one quarter and not building any shower screen at all since the bathroom is so big.

How come you've closed off the entire length? For the shower area? But I thought the MBR toilet should be quite big, a quarter for shower area should be more than enough?

Hi!! I see you have Inovar vinyl tiles! We are also looking to get vinyl and were recommended Inovar by a friend who also has it installed. Just wondering, is the installation by Inovar via glue-down instead of locking? and is it only water-resistant not waterproof? Trying to decide between Inovar vs Eco vs Evorich...

Oh gosh your place looks amazing! Extremely unique and very very nice now! Congrats on moving in as well!

Hihi!! Haha I saw some of the photos already ()! Looking good! Andrew says if I want to see his workmanship I should just wait till your house is done and I come see yours? Heh heh. Oooh! You bought your recess area? But keeping the louvre window wall? We decided we wouldn't buy our recess area muahaha but still use it to store shoes anyway. As for lighting at the staircase, our own preference (but of course doesn't mean it's the best) is to get LED lights which are uplights and downlights concurrently, and mount one above the staircase mid-level landing, and also one on each side of the Void area next to the staircase. This way they will work to light up the staircase area as well as provide lighting for the first floor at the edge of the dining room and the living room. And then wall lights on the second floor landing. Uplight+downlight LED light something like this? We saw what we wanted from Chan Huat but no pictures of it: I was quite interested in a good hanging light from the ceiling but we really couldn't find one that we liked that would be easy to clean. And if it was a normal ceiling light it might be difficult to reach in order to change the bulb next time or do any kind of maintenance. We did think the along-the-stairs lighting effect would be good but that's way too many lighting points to do for us, not to mention we intended to just keep our staircase as is mostly without needing to do much to it.

Gosh I really love the concrete floors and also how well the wood-like tiles in the kitchen work with the darker kitchen cabinetry!! Excited for you!

I like cornices too! Well, I like the current ones that we have in our flat but we will have to rip them out as we are doing re-wiring. Not sure whether we would get new ones or just plaster over after.

Merry belated Christmas to everyone and a Happy New Year soon! Nothing much to update except that we met up with ID #4 over the weekend and he seemed really promising, so waiting for ID#3's revised quote and ID#4's quote, and also going to meet with ID#5 next week. Hopefully we can settle on our ID by our 2nd HDB appointment, which is end Jan, so that actual planning can start before we get our keys in March! Also, finally bought a mattress vacuum (Dyson V6) because both my husband and I have been getting terrible sinus issues recently which we suspect might be due to our mattress being dirty, so we fast-forwarded our planned purchase and will start using it once we get it! Hope to update on a review of it soon. Lazada.sg was having a sale on it so we managed to get it for $462.90! Usually it's around $499 or $500+ when we see it in the departmental stores.

Hi matchalatte! Sorry for jumping in! Like panjangowner, we also bought our place without an agent but I think the situation is more complicated for the seller than it is for a first time buyer. It's not compulsory for the seller to have an agent though I think HDB probably would encourage having one for the seller. If you want to try your hand at it apparently HDB runs resale seminars. You can try the checklist for how to sell your HDB flat here[

Hi kaisermisaki! We do have android phones but when we were looking at the brochure, none of the functions for android TV really appealed to us. Do you have it? What is useful about it or what do you use it for?

Hi arturobinewski! Haha how did you know I've already been to Tan Boon Liat? But yes, we did. It's really quite nice but the price range was beyond our budget. We set ourselves budgets of around $2k for sofa and we were originally looking for L shaped sofas. I don't think any of the L-shaped sofas were anywhere near our budget so we bowed out. Actually I think Tan Boon Liat is not as ulu as some other places . It's within walking distance from Great World City!

To finish off the living room, I thought I'd might as well also list down the electronics we've already picked out for it. For our TV: Sony R550C 48" We didn't really do that much research on TVs, just that Sony was more well-known for its visuals and we didn't want a TV that was too big. Out of the Sony TVs, this one caught our eye because it is supposed to be dust-resistant with no-ventilation hole design and protects against humidity, surge and lightning. Plus it was Full HD and not super expensive. We didn't need a super-top-of-the-line model really and will probably hook up the TV to our own media console (maybe a Mac mini) so we didn't need the Android TV functions. Soundbar: Philips HTL5140B/12 Again not much research done, just based on the fact that Philips has a good reputation for their audios. Generally good reviews online. Ceiling fan: Fanco FFM7000 White 52" We wanted a simple white fan with no lights and no need for remote. My mother-in-law's house has been using a Fanco for years and it's been great, and the online reviews seem to indicate Fanco being a good brand. We will have white track lights in our living room to account for the ceiling fan. Also intending to get a PS4 for the TV, and bring over my old Xbox 360 with Kinect.

Hi twinklecloud! Wow! Heh heh. Is Andrew going to do your kitchen up then? Does he do it with Kompactplus or with something else for that wood-feel countertop? I was quite set on my dark-coloured cabinet doors and my wooden countertop because I was worried about discolouration of the cabinet doors and didn't want a white (stains easily) or a black (cannot see stuff like ants or water on it) countertop!

Hi sarah833, Oooh thanks for the link! I actually read through that T-blog some time ago and forgot that they had an Ikea kitchen (I remembered it for their amazing tips on leaving space for roombas to charge and all those little bits catering to being a new mother!)! Shall go read it again! Hi kaisermisaki, I know what you mean, I actually can't figure out what is the difference between the Dyson mattress vacuum and the DC61, but I would probably go for the mattress one.

Hi nextstep! Thanks for the PM! And wow Dyson Roomba... Not sure whether I would wait for it the hole in my wallet might spontaneously combust. But if it's already out when I'm buying my Roomba maybe will consider if the price is right! Hi Reiki! Thanks for the "upvote" for drawers in the kitchen! I used to use my mom's old kitchen including having to clean them out during CNY so I know the pain of being unable to reach deep into the back of shelves for that last pile of bowls/plates and having to squat to do so if its the lowest shelf near the floor! I'm definitely for drawers! They are indispensable for the lower cabinets! Thank you also for the advice on the furniture! Actually we have been using Google Sketchup to do both our own 3D (before we got furniture in mind, we plugged in generic furniture models from online to get a feel for how the space felt in 3D) and also 2D floorplanning. Just yesterday we stuck in all the furniture that we've already picked out into the 2D floorplan to see how the space worked, and it looked good! There were a few surprises like how we didn't realize how long our TV was going to be as compared to our TV console but it was nice to know beforehand.
