Land is not infinite, and in our Little Red Dot, homes seem to be shrinking in size by the day. The benefit of having a smaller place is having less area to clean, but the downfall is that we’re challenged with having less and less storage space to keep all of our clothes, books, gadgets and knick knacks (plus, with shopping being Singapore’s national sport, it doesn’t help that we keep accumulating more and more stuff!).
Keeping small homes spacious doesn’t necessarily mean decluttering and getting rid of your belongings - we know how hard it is to let go of things. Sometimes, all you need is to create space in places you didn’t think space existed.
Here are our top tips for making the most of your cozy, humble abodes:
1. Go vertical
Wall space is valuable real estate in a small apartment. Make as much use of your walls as you can by adding shelves all the way to the ceiling. *Bonus tip*: Remove your bed’s headboard for that extra wall space and use it to display your favorite photos.
2. Raise the bed
Exchange your low platform bed for one with pull-out drawers and storage compartments, perfect for putting away your extra clothing. This is an ideal space-saving tip for your child’s bedroom too, with various kid-friendly loft bed designs offering study or relaxation spaces in the bottom bunk.
3. Explore above the door
Always wanted a personal library but could never find the room to do so? Build in bookshelves in the empty space above your door, giving your house a cleverly integrated storage solution.
4. Lose the walls
Break down those thick cage-like walls and replace them with sheer curtain room dividers. Doing so will help to make your house look lighter and create a feeling of space.
5. Extend your tables
Give your dining area flexibility with extendable tables. Collapse or extend the table ends at your wish, making the space ideal for a meal for two or a larger dinner party for six.
6. Less is more
Avoid cluttering your home with bulky, unnecessary furniture. One large coffee table in front of your couch is better than having three smaller side tables surrounding your couch.
*Bonus tip*: Opt for a rectangular or square coffee table over a round one, and use the empty under-space for chic and handy storage baskets.
7. Clever corners
Make the most of every nook and cranny in your home. If you can’t spare a room for your study or office needs, build in your workdesk into the corner of a room to minimize the amount of floor space used.
