Q1. What are the reasons I’m doing this renovation?
Firstly, you will need to be clear on your own reason for remodelling. Are you renovating to increase the sale price of your home? If so, the potential returns will affect how much you’re willing to invest in the renovation package. Or are you intending to renovate to live out your old days in comfort? In that case, your package will need to include age-in-place features like accommodating easy mobility for wheelchair and so on. Or perhaps you simply need a change because your current abode is starting to look a little dated. Whatever the reasons, you need to be clear with yourself and your contractor.
2. Do I know what I want?
It’s not uncommon for homeowners not to know the kind of look they want to end up with after the renovation works. It is part of the designer’s job to help you identify what you want, but there are certain steps you can do on your own to facilitate the process. Ask yourself general words that you’d want for your house. Do you want it to look warm? Minimalist? Country? Eclectic? Next, look through home décor magazines and tear out certain examples for reference to share with your decorator. Ask questions whenever you visit someone’s home and see something you like. Do you have a substantial budget or is the budget a fixed and limited one? To make sure you don’t go over budget, be upfront with your interior designer how much you’re willing to spend. Also double check what the package he has quoted you includes. Many times, the initial renovation quote may not include sanitary and lighting accessories, electrical works and miscellaneous costs like for example moving cost. These additional costs may easily double the initial quote, so be prepared. In addition, you might want to top up between 20 to 40 percent of the final bill in case there are unexpected surprises that crop up while the work is being done.
5. How much inconvenience am I willing to put up with?
Home renovation TV shows may make it seem effortless, but the reality of embarking on such a project may be totally different. If the renovation is an extensive one, it could go on for months. Particularly if you work from home or have babies at home, are you willing to put up with the dust and noise and general inconvenience this might pose? Always make sure you do background check before hiring renovation professionals like contractors, architects and planners so that your remodelling project will keep to its projected deadline.
