How to Transform a Small Space into a Spacious Environment Within Your Home

Interior Design & Decor

Living in a cramped space can create stress and often, makes you cranky. Who wants to wake up in the morning in a room which makes you feel claustrophobic? Right, no one. Regardless if you are renting a studio-type apartment or you want to make the most of the space you currently have, there are different approaches to your problem.

1. De-clutter!

This is the most basic point to consider when you want to have larger spaces in your home. This one is so simple; you do not need to purchase anything at all.

Look at the pieces currently in your space and weigh if you are still using them. If not, take them out from the room to make way for more useful furniture. Do not get too attached to furniture.

Additionally, when picking out hanging decorations such as picture frames or artwork, do not overdo it. Do not fill your wall entirely with knick-knacks, as it can make the room feel too busy and crowded. It is better to have one large painting over than a group of small paintings. Having too much in the room can quickly create the environment of being too stuffed, so you want to avoid that.

2. Use mirrors

Most designers recommend using a mirror to trick the eye into seeing more space. And an oval mirror can create an impact. You can use this strategy anywhere in your room. All you have to do is place a mirror in a central location to create a focal point – in the center of your living room or bedroom, perhaps? You can also put the mirror behind a light source such as a candle or lamp, to reflect light and to add ambiance to the room. If there is a window in the room, place the mirror on it to give the illusion of having another window.

3. Draw the eye upward

A room has both a horizontal and vertical dimension. If you want to decorate a room with high ceiling, aim to draw the eye upward. It will look like you are making most of the extra space. You can achieve this by using floor-to-ceiling drapes. Just make sure that the colour you choose for the drapes match well with the colour of the room and take time finding the right size. For example, if you use a small to a midsize piece of artwork, it will make the room feel larger as it invites the eye to roam beyond eye-level horizontal space.

4. Use neutral colours

Using a palette of off-white and beige is a great way to create a larger space than you have. You can have this colour palette on your walls, floor, ceiling and even with your furniture. This colour expands the space in your room by appearing to push back the walls. Choosing to go with soft hues also allows light to reflect in the room. Additionally, these colours instantly add sophistication and class to any room in your home.

5. Consider the lightweight appearance of the furniture

Lightweight appearance is the concept used to perceive the heaviness of the object based on its size, colour, and design. When you shop for furniture, consider this to create wider spaces for your home. Select pieces that have a lighter appearance over heavier ones as the latter will appear to restrict space. Avoid furniture which is too boxy and goes for ones which have legs. Tables will look like they are taking too much visual space once you see through them.

6. Use multifunctional pieces

You do not want your furniture to take up so much space in your home. This will give you and your visitors the feeling of smaller spaces. Look for pieces that serve more than one purpose for you. There is a lot of furniture out there that does this; you can have an ottoman which doubles as a book organiser inside or a sofa chair which can double as a bookshelf. You can even look for DIYs online!

Wrapping up

When deciding to re-decorate your home, do not be scared to try out new things. You can even try everything all at once to know which works best for your style and your home. After all, it is your home, so you have the liberty to do whatever you want.
