1 pointWas looking for a storage solution for our storeroom and bought this metal shelf from a store in Geylang called JunYu after seeing it on a blog in renotalk. Renotalk is awesome! It was about $190 + $30 for delivery and set up. It was a very simple set up and you can do it yourself, but since I got the 1.5m long model, transportation home was the problem. Simple, metal, black. Perfect!! For those people who would like a close up view of the blinds. Just before we shifted in, they installed the Electronic lock on the gate and I couldn't be happier!! Installation took about an hour but the gate was made with the lock in mind so it all went smoothly. The outside is beautiful and its been a joy to use. The inside looks like this: The buttons on the back have all been disabled so that people can't just reach around the gate and let themselves in. Instead, they give you a little remote like this that you can either hang next to the door, or carry with you around the house as you wish. We placed it inside the house to let ourselves out. I was surprised that the autolock function wasn't instantaneous. Meaning you had to close the gate and hold it closed for about 3secs before it engages the lock. Anyone in our day and age will tell you that's 3 secs too long when you want to be on your way. Thankfully, the installers told me that you could place your palm over it after you close it to instantly engage the lock. We found that this also works when you're coming home and you close the gate. Then we just reach around to the outside and tap the face of the lock to get it to hold. I think the convenience of being keyless when I go out has given me the most pleasure! So much freedom!! A totally worthwhile investment to me.

1 pointIts been a crazy ride but we are finally in our flat! We have stayed the first night and the feeling of being home owners is just AMAZING. We kept looking around the house and thinking how beautiful it all was. Not to sound mushy, but a large part of that joy is finally being able to have a space that you can both own and share. Something that belongs not just to you, but the both of you as a unit. All these musings we shared over wine during the first night in our living room, admiring our brick wall. *Of course I understand that this musing is fairly unique to singapore where you can only buy (more) affordable housing once you're married. Enough of that, let me give you what you all want! Pics! Our new sofa! Custom made and kindly sponsored by my parents in lieu of the 5 "dian jin" (5 bits of gold) during our wedding. The dimensions are perfect! Deep enough to sit cross legged but not so deep that you feel like you're falling when you try to lean back. The firmness is ideal as well! Just wish that the legs were less chunky and more sleek. The fabric makes it look slightly brown but i suspect that its just the lighting off the slightly shiny material. Looks great at night at least! The beautiful brick wall that we were admiring from our couch. our kitchen! A very clean and simple bedroom. We have different schedules so it was important that we just sleep there and get out to do everything else so we don't disturb each other. You can also see the pretty blinds! And this is my beautiful study! I LOOOOVE it. Wife won't get me out of it.

1 pointI'd used Blum in almost all hinges and runners in the house, except for some minor carpentry where usage is not high. Asked my carpenter, he has experience with other make but still find Blum the best in terms of quality. But I do agree with you that they are pricey, however per hinge set is about $2 if I rem correct. Hinge set meaning hinge and soft closing. And by hinge, referring to those open to 90 deg and not those 120 deg or more. Then again, you wont need so many hinge set. A HDB full height cabinet needs about 4 hinges and 2 soft closing is enough. So meaning, 6 parts a door. Base on this, you can add up and make an estimation of the quantity needed. I had extreme amount of carpentry, I was told by my carpenter to get 180 hinges but 90 soft closing. Still the sums adds up. The killer is actually the "Aventos" hydraulic arm, one that is commonly fitted at the dish rack that use to conceal the dish rack. This piece alone is SGD$100 plus. Then comes the runner, think mine are using Movento, can hold up to 40kg per drawer, good for kitchen for keeping bottles of oil, sauces, seasoning. If one roast and bake, those cast iron ware are pretty heavy but these runners can hold them up if kept in drawer.

1 pointHi JohnB, these are working very well. I really like the integrated sink as there is no joint with the solid surface and hence no bacteria will be trap there. For typical sinks, silicon will be applied along the joints to prevent water seepage. However, the silicon may be worn out in time, Dirt gets trapped there easily too. Unfortunately, Ikea only carries white sinks for such integrated types. There are some slight yellow stains on mine already. If you are buying such sink from other sources, you can consider other colours for the sink. I did asked Ikea's supplier to quote me for a sink made of the same solid surface that I chose. However, it was too expensive. Actifry is really useful. It produced really yummy and crispy fried drumsticks. I only had to marinate the drumsticks with salt and pepper for 5min, place them into the Actifry and the machine will fry on its own for 25min. There isn't much exhaust. However, the floor do get slightly oily. It is good to do a quick mop after frying.

1 pointThe "fish tank" look. Looks like an enclosed space in the carpentry. The frame amplify the "fish tank" feel. So instead of solid top of granite, stone etc, we replace with carpentry. And the top layered with tempered glass act as protected against the carpentry. Additional lighting are added, as ceiling lights are not bright enough due to design. Another design idea from Mr. Foo. The slide out is good for using rice cooker/electric kettle etc where the steam can emit directly and not onto the carpentry. Further to that, can act as an "island" for food preparation with things within reach.

1 pointI was using one previously for a decade. Brand is Rinnai. I have no problem with it, water is hot and bills was low. So right now in our new place, we purchased another gas heater together with gas dryer from CItygas. This time the brand we took is Ferroli. No special preference, simply went for the biggest capacity here. I prefer gas because of the long term lower cost which has proven to save me cost. Am not a fan of hot shower, mainly for the missus only. As long as she is ok, I am fine.

1 pointNot necessarily the case as it depends on your usage pattern. If you switch on both a 4.5 kW Instant heater and a 1.8 kW storage heater for one hour, the instant heater will consume 2.5 times more power at 4.5 kWh as compared to the storage heater at 1.8 kWh. However, the nature of the instant heater is such that you power on only when you use it. So, if you need to take a 10 min shower, you will switch on the instant heater for only 10 mins. For storage heaters, many users have the habit of turning on the storage heater 5 to 30 mins before use, in order to heat up the water in the tank. Assuming you switched on the storage heater for 20 mins before use, and then use it for another 10 mins (total 30 mins), the energy consumption is actually slightly more than the instant heater (0.9 kWh as compared to 0.75 kWh). The current electricity rate should be 0.2568 per kWh, so the difference is only about 4 cents for this one use. I hope my calculations are correct!

1 pointHaha I insisted on sitting on the toilet bowl like an idiot to test all the positions before he installed it. Felt rather self conscious being on the toilet with a few people watching but what to do? The water that slides backwards is in your shower area right? Won't that get wet everyday? However if its drying fast then that means that the problem isn't that bad to begin with. Main door is actually the same light grey as most of the walls of our house. But yes, I wanted a white door to constrast the black scissor gate at first! But both ID and the mrs shot me down. HA! So thank you for justifying my choice!! (I gotta admit that her choice of the grey was a better idea though) ((also, she reads this blog... ))

1 pointOur renovations are about to come to an end. Now is the laborious period of cleaning and CLEANING!. We found a couple of chipped tiles, after cleaning spick and span, and we had the contractor to come back and RE-TILE! Yes! A bit heart pain but well, we will just have to re-clean and re-wipe everything again. Not that we are complaining. Here are a few pic of our Kompac Plus kitchen table top, combine with the white glossy laminate and black grouted white sub-way tiles. We got our inspiration from, no other than Kompac Plus website itself. HAHA!
