  1. How have you been bro? Hope your renovations coming along nicely man. Anyway, here is a pic of the sofa. I finally uncovered it a couple of days ago. haha
  2. Sure thing man, will PM you in a while. Yes, please don't show her, otherwise I can't help you already But truth be told, everyone deserves a nice wardrobe, guys included haha. We are sacrificing one entire room for that though, so it may well come back and haunt us in the future! In the meantime, we're just going to enjoy it as much as we can
  3. Oh, I'm just as clueless as you when it comes to final inspection. My wife is a lot more rigorous in that department, scrutinizing our house for every bit that she doesn't like. It really depends on how good or how bad the workmanship is I guess. Best tip I have received is to get other homeowners who have gone through the renovation process (e.g. your parents) to point out obvious flaws in workmanship etc. I think some of the defects/poor workmanship are generally very obvious. The more experienced homeowners can help out with the less obvious ones I guess. But it's always best that you catch what is not to your liking, you'll have to live with it after all haha. If your husband is the more detailed one, get him to do a thorough inspection of the house haha. If you find that your cleaning lady is good, would you care to share? We also desperately need cleaning services. The wife has been cleaning her brains out in our home.
  4. Thanks bert! It's been such a busy time - you'll experience it soon too haha. We got the singer legs from Second Charm - look for Sharifah. She will be able to custom make a table top for you too I'm sure. Looking forward to see what you do with it buddy.
  5. Hi guys, About time I gave the long awaited review on the Crestar ICOL matte black fan. Gonna be a short and sweet one: Material: The blades feel very plasticky and are kindda soft, but that's not a problem cos if the fan drops *touch wood* it's not going to injure anyone seriously. Looks: Simply gorgeous Performance: 4 speed analog fan. For a light breeze, choose speed 2. The curvature and design of the blades make it such that quite a lot of air is generated for such a small fan. So quite pleased. Noise: This is my biggest gripe about the fan - it is very noisy at high speeds! Even on speed 2 you can hear a bit of the noise, but after a while you begin to block it out. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the ball bearings in the fan (maybe it's not greased properly or something?) Overall, the looks and performance trump the noise problems. If you're a person who needs the fan just to create just enough breeze and not a typhoon, this is the fan for you!
  6. hi inthechouse, just dropping by to say congrats on completing the reno! Ours is also awaiting final inspection right now and we can't wait for everything to be over. Instead of hiring movers, we have been bringing a few boxes over each time we go to our new place. Nothing like the feeling of settling into your new house eh? Btw, how many rounds of cleaning have you done so far?
  7. Guys, as you know I have fallen off the grid recently. haha. apologies for the late response! Been busy in HK and had reservist as well, not to mention all the house moving and constant cleaning!! Anyway, now that we are more settled I can get back to blogging again Time to clear some messages. Once again, sorry for the delay. I can only send you a rough breakdown but I'm afraid to be fair to our contractor I will not be able to give you a detailed quote. hellonub, we got the tiles at Soon Bee Huat at Toh Guan, code number: HT-AT6004. Don't think there's a description for the colour though. Can only give you a breakdown by category but not a detailed one to be fair to our contractor, sorry! oh that's actually an original window from HDB, the colour just so happens to look like wood haha. We actually wanted to paint it black or white. baulthaup does have some very good kitchens. We are trying not to do too much drilling in the kitchen, so we managed to get those suction type bars to be put in the kitchen. Doesn't look as nice or sleek but I think they will do just fine. May also get some of the black kitchen accessories from ikea to add some flavour to the kitchen. Right now, we're just adding as and where we feel necessary I guess. hi mrbytez, some of our visitors have been quite perplexed and confused by our singer sewing machine legs haha, but after we told them it serves no practical use besides to look pretty, they kindda got it. Since the old sewing machine legs are presumably cast iron, it should be quite sturdy for the toilet environment. With the additional paint coat we got for it, it should hold up to rust quite well, at least for a while haha. But you're absolutely right, most of the time people us it as support for table tops. In fact, our sewing machine legs can be taken out since it's not attached to the vanity top. So if we ever decide to use it as a table support, we can still do so! Nope, it's a PD door - so it slides to one side first, then swings inwards. Cheers Ok! PM you in a while. Thanks greg! Haha yea a big bulk of the costs went into carpentry. The quality of the carpentry could be better though. Edges seem a bit rough and you can see the edges of the laminate. You know what, the previous owners also had the same basin and tap! I just realized it after looking back at our old pictures. Could have kept it and saved money OK guys, I'll be posting the latest pictures real soon,. Stay tuned!
  8. Thanks! Yup I think we're almost at the end already, can't wait to move all our stuff in and start decorating for real. Actually I think decorating could be equally challenging. hmmm ours is definitely smooth when walking over, but there are quite a number of different cement screed lookalike tiles out there so maybe he's referring to a particular type that he saw before. Most if not all of the tiles that have seen are smooth though, so I don't think you'll have a problem
  9. Another quick post before dinner - the LED lights for the living room display cabinet and MBR dresser mirror are up!
  10. Just some updates and pictures taken before I left for HK. I think reno wise we are almost there - final painting is being done today and the 2nd chemical wash will be carried out tomorrow! After that we are waiting for the final piece of the puzzle to come in on Tuesday (the glass backsplash) and we are done. Took a while to get here but I'm pretty sure it's worth the wait. For starters, here is a picture of our MBR door with the other side of the handle up. Previously, the door people said that it could not be mounted because there was some mechanism missing, but it turns out that it was just a case of miscommunication as they didn't know we wanted the handle to be a dummy handle - meaning it's just there to look pretty. So after they understood that, all they had to do was drill a hole and then glue the handle in place. Door is now looking good and awaiting white paint. Quartz top for the kitchen is finally in! The look is finally close to being completed, although I must say our kitchen is in desperate need for colour to avoid it from looking too sterile. Likewise, the quartz tops for the bathrooms are up, thus allowing for the sinks to be up as well. The singer sewing machine legs have not been placed underneath the guest bathroom sink yet, so I'll post pics again once it's positioned. For the MBR toilet, there was some issue with the sink's hole where the tap is supposed to go in - it was too small, and so the guys from wasser bath had to come down to enlarge the hole. shucks. Anyway, the light above the mirror is now up, giving a really nice feel to the place when it's turned on. Very cosy as it lights up both ways - up and down. Dining light is up! There was a bit of a comedic error with the placement of these lights. Our electrician got the measurement completely off! Instead of measuring 45 cm (which is half the width of our dining table), he measured the full 90 cm instead which meant that the lights were placed way too far to the right. Anyway, they have since gotten it rectified or so I hear. Just a preview of the placement of the TV in our MBR - I have a feeling that it's going to be utilized much more than our living room TV haha.
  11. Greetings from HK once again (which explains my absence)! Hope everyone is having a good start to the weekend. I will try not to turn this thread into a car discussion forum, hahaha. not ready yet! Sofa is in but hasn't been unwrapped cos the place is still very messy and dusty! How's your place coming along? Hi bianzi, I just pm-ed you good choice to get the 500 - did you get the gucci edition? Hahah Hello hellonub, the flooring is actually smooth homogeneous tiles which happen to look like cement screed - it's as easy to maintain as other homogeneous tiles Life is about bringing happiness and laughter to other people
  12. hi there jczm, unfortunately I still haven't had a chance to test it out yet cos they have yet to put up the fan control switch and other light switches on the feature wall! Don't worry I won't forget your request as a lot of people has been asking me for a review of the fan too. Guessing it's rather new to the market that's why. Get back to you guys as soon as I can on this. Cheers. you very funny la bro, thought you gonna ask me about my doors instead. Yes I drive a punto. You too? Small and zippy but useless to transport stuff haha. So for people doing reno or moving house, definitely not good .
  13. hello hojichalatte, dropped by to say hi, and also to tell you that there is someone called Andy who is advertising his aluminium works services here in Renotalk: http://www.renotalk.com/forum/topic/49500-home-aluminium-metal-works/page-9#entry832814 You may wish to check out the thread and call him for further advice if need be. Hope this helps
  14. based on your existing colour scheme, I would vote for iZen since iQuartz could be a bit overpowering.
  15. hmmm yours looks about right actually, but maybe my eye not as sharp as yours
  16. hi jiawen, Was looking at your space planning bearing in mind the space considerations. I think you could consider moving the sofa closer to your feature wall, and then put the dining table behind, cos 5.3 m length for your living area is very wide. Ours is only 3.4m! As it stands I agree with Harriette - the dining area seems a bit small. For your MBR, I think it's about as wide as mine. Shouldn't have a problem with your proposed layout. Cheers.
  17. sorry you didn't get to choose the black framed doors! but hopefully your husband is pleased with his choice of with bifold doors at least? as for the cement strip area, we also have the same step, but ours was covered by the same floor tiles. If I'm not wrong your contractor should do that for you too, otherwise it just looks strange. beautiful choice of floor colour! very cosy feel indeed
  18. hello inthechouse, came by to check on your progress and am glad to see that things are coming along. I too am of the opinion that your kitchen tiles look nicer, mainly because it looks more streamlined. The difference between yours and the internet picture is just the thickness of the grouting (correct me if I'm wrong). For grouting, I always feel that thinner is better. As for the smudging, I think it depends on the extent. For our black grouting in the toilets for example, there are some areas where the width of the grouting is not 100% the same, which makes it look like there's some smudging. From what I can tell from your picture above, I believe it is within the tolerance - the tiler isn't going to get it 100% perfect I feel. So not to worry! Your renos are coming along just fine
  19. thanks alfred! yup we have and they've already sent it to our place. They gave up tapered legs of about 5 inch high so that should provide plenty of clearance for the robot. Hooray thanks for the compliment hojichalatte! the subcon for our frames is Wellmax Metal Works. I just did a search on them and found this thread: http://www.renotalk.com/forum/topic/13338-wellmax-metal-works/page-3 So it looks like there are mixed reviews about them (mostly bad it seems), and if you're intending to engage them directly, you may have to be mentally prepared to do all the chasing etc. Btw, there was a problem with our study room door frame - they made it such that it couldn't open fully into the room However, our contractor got them to bring it back and fix it so all is good now. If you want to take the risk and contact them: their contact details are here under the HDB Infoweb page: http://www.hdb.gov.sg/bn25/isos118p.nsf/0/3B564D9274E5A57048256DE100236AF0?OpenDocument&ReDirectFLag=1 Good Luck!
  20. Hi LionFlyer, Our laminate wall cost about $2100 to make. The fan is from Crestar's ICOL series, costs $220 for the analog option and can be bought at Chan Huat Lighting at 391 Balestier Road. Cheers! Nicely done Harriette, and a brilliant idea at that. Unfortunately we didn't factor in the robot vacuum so it'll have to hide at another corner of the room. Thanks for sharing!
  21. Morning all, wishing you guy a good week ahead at work and for renos! thanks jiawen! Can't wait to see it with all our clothes and barang barang inside. Hopefully we can keep it nice and organized ya. That's something that we're certainly thinking about, but not too sure how much something like that would cost though, any idea? In the meantime, we are also thinking of putting a long ottoman in the middle so that the wife or I can sit and browse clothes to wear. ahah. hi qus! the fan is from Crestar and the series is called ICOL. The fan itself is matte black. You can find it at the Chan Huat branch located at 391 Balestier Road, near Boon Tong Kee. thanks inthechouse! Understand that your reno w Alan has been a bit frustrating, but hang in there! The end is in sight. pm-ed you PM-ed you too thanks! tried to send you a pm but I think your inbox is full?
