PangTan76 0 Report post Posted April 1, 2008 hi ppl, seek your expertise to advise on the following issue for renovation. 1. for marble flooring, is it ok to overlay with laminates? One contractor told me it is ok to do so as long as the workmanship is good and there is allowance at the edges for the laminate to "move" slightly. The other told me cannot cos the marble is porous and the water moisture from below will affect the joint/groove of the laminates and there wil be problems 5 yrs down the road... which is right? 2. Is there a saying that marble will harden over time if not maintained regularly and thus it would be useless to polish it after that?3. Can the walls of the toilet be hacked so that I can relocate the toilet door? One told me it is fine to do so as long as u apply for the permit from HDB while the other told me cannot as it will affect the waterproofing. 4. Is there any old folks saying to that the kitchen stove or sink cannot face the kitchen door? Appreciate all advice given. Thanks.

Is there any old folks saying to that the kitchen stove or sink cannot face the kitchen door?yes.of cos.
lifestyle 0 Report post Posted April 1, 2008 (edited) Agree with what MaCe mentioned above.Definitely need to apply permit from HDB as you are hacking a wall. Decribe in your application your details requirements (e.g. only hacking wall for relocating toilet entrance door AND not waterproofing the area surrounding the knock wall, door or floor) and see what the response will be like.I'm not sure by knocking the wall, will it affect your existing waterproofing? This you need to check some professional here or HDB.We relocate our toliet entrace as well but we redo the whole waterproofing in the bathroom.3. PangTan76 0 Report post Posted April 1, 2008 hi ppl, thanx for the advice. For overlaying on marble, cos for the rooms, it is hard on the elderly if they wake up to a cold floor, be it due to low temp at night or aircon. furthermore, we are considering using platform bed, n marble n platform bed dun go together well. For the marble, one told me tht "old" marble will harden over time, so even if u use diamond grind, it will not help.... got such theory? all along thought marble is marble, grind it and it will be fine.yar... interested in relocating the toilet door more to the side so as to have more space for the bed... since i am going to hack off all the toilet wall and floor tiles, I do not understand why i can't relocate the door too, as long as it is not a column.Any idea how much it cost roughly to install a hidden sliding top-hung wooden door?Any advice is welcome. I am having a platform over my existing 'broken marble' flooring in balcony area (levelled) and MBR. Dun go well? We just treat the marble flooring as white color. White and dark brown do match. I suppose it's really depending on the color of laminates...
