mscorby 0 Report post Posted June 24, 2008 Hi, am relatively new to posting here but have been a quiet observer for a long time. Just wish to seek the expert opinions of forumers here who have bought furniture online, especially from overseas sites. I am interested to get furnitures that are unique, and yet cheap from countries like US. Have realized that US have some of the nicest and cheapest furnitures around (at least to my liking) and am wondering if anyone has shipped anything big items from there before. How much is the shipping typically and also any good US home furnishing sites to recommend? TIA!
revieli 0 Report post Posted June 27, 2008 I haven't tried furnitures, but I shipped 7 lamps and a clock from US via UPS and it cost US$500.
SmartFool 0 Report post Posted June 30, 2008 Just got back from the USA agree with u basically that the furniture there is so cheap However shipping is a real challenge when i wanted to ship some basic stuff eg curtains back, is cost around 100usd for 20 pounds and the box was really small best if u can ship using sea freight, its around 500usd on average depending on US location oso when it reaches spore, u gota pay another round of tax and costs which i am not sure how much that would be weight for this freight thing is around 600 pounds at max so this is good if u wana move house other than that, it could be better if u actually seen some of the stuff online stuff photos can be quite deceiving anyway just places i went were Linens and things (which was going to close down) Target Walmart the Container Store Ross
patsy_sg 1 Report post Posted June 30, 2008 if you want to ship products from the US to Singapore, do not use courier services as the fees will most likely end up more expensive than the item. Like what SmartFool said, best if you can ship by sea, but be aware you will have to pay local clearing and duty plus GST here in singapore, so you must factor that into the costs. One thing to consider, a lot of the furniture in US sites are now made in Asia!! depending on your style.. some of the on line stores you can look at are: crate and barrel bed, bath and beyond target and kmart for towels/sheets etc macy's dillards bloomingdales another option is for you to find someone who is moving to singapore from the US, and piggy back on their containers coming here, just pay them a small fee which they are ok with since a lot of expats' moving expenses are paid for by their company. Good luck!
SmartFool 0 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 on top of what patsy said crate and barrel = vey ex but nice bed bath and beyond = not bad kmart/target = nice and cheap but kmart is not available in all cities so got to check which city ur shipping from if u were checking it like me (Texas) = more ex macys dillards and bloomingdales had nice stuff but were way over for me

MaCe 3 Report post Posted July 3, 2008 patsy beri beri experience on this siah.... ___________________________ biggest problem is still the shipping charges especially now oil price up up and away. * I used to use vpost - but i believe they have a limit on size. * if you are buying NON-antqiue/designer furnitures, no point - cos nowadays 99% of furnitures are made in asia(china). * if you thinking of the word CHEAP - go JB and see look see look. I am still looking for a sea freight(local US/UK courier) if anyone knows - pls share share.

Was just telling hb furnishing the house would have cost half if we lived in the States! For sea freight, you can contact most of the local freight companies to ship in for you... but the clearing charges are the killers... think for 1 cubic metre it can to up to $300-400 coz of all the little charges here and there! Exception are those designed by WORLD CLASS well known designers - but 1 sofa set costs 15k or more....4k for a table lamp...etc but antique furniture = it appreciates in VALUE, 10-20 yrs later you can sell it for a lot more than what you pay now.
