Any Ideas How To Conceal Ugly Retaining Walls?

We just bought a semi-d located along a down slope. There's a tall vertical retaining stone wall at the back of the house and a shorter sloping retaining wall along the side of the house. I've heard from a builder that we cannot plaster over the wall or do anything drastic without reconstructing. Could anyone advise on what we could possibly do to conceal it, has anyone had any experience with this?

Yup, have read about climbing plants and seen some pictures of them. My concern is if it would start to overgrow eg into neighbour's compound and if it will attract more insects?
