  1. Parquet is nice too. Just polish and varnish and it will be as good as new. One flooring that is a good dampener of sound is vinyl laminate. It has wood grain designs too. Formica has it. Me considering putting it in the bathroom. BTW, anybody knows whether bamboo laminates can be put in the bathroom? What are the pros and cons? The offer at $3.80 seems good.
  2. Are you going to use it as a bedroom?
  3. Definitely difficult to close and open the windows. Moreover, natural lighting though beautiful but it's not suitable for desk work. There's glare, too bright, too dim are all bad for the the eyes. Light conditions varies even within minutes. Best for table to be away from windows and use artificial table lights like 3M.
  4. Alternatively, for a greener method, you can use wood putty to fill up the holes. And paint to your cabinet color. If it's really that bad, you can get your contractor to change. Discuss amicably.
  5. Maybe you can try painting your walls the same shade as your air-con casing? This will make the aircon casing blend in with the wall and the yellowness will not look so noticeable. People will even think that it is part of the design!
  6. Just wipe clean your pipes of dust, dirt and any oil residue. If you don't like your hands to get too close to the dirt first, use a vacuum cleaner with the brush head to vacuum the dust and dirt first. It gets rid of 80% of the dirtiness already. Wear gloves and wipe with damp cloth. And paint with oil-based paint using normal paint brush. You will need to apply at least 2 coats.
  7. Hi, I am interested to make a 60cm X 40cm opening in one wall. There are tiles on one side of the wall. Then framing (cheap ones in any material will do) have to be added on all 4 sides to make it neat. The measurements include the frames. Any idea what will the cost be? Thanks.
  8. Hi Ernie, That's really an ingenious idea! And to hack off the entire MBR wall and replace with glass looks great too! It lets in more light too! But what kind of glass will you being using? Clear? Frosted? Will it be sliding or folding doors? It seems like my hubby is bent on installing walk-in wardrobe. He finds the current layout of the wardrobe on the long side of the wall makes the bedroom too narrow. Also, he intends to remove the board that blocks up the small window on the west side of the wall. With this opening, it means that the bed cannot be there right? I understand that it will cause illnesses like flu when sleeping under it. In this case, we have to switch sleeping directions to face west, right?
  9. You have a right to be concerned. There is chances of peeling especially when the plaster is not completely dried before painting. Another thing is that plaster is porous. That is when you apply paint on it, moisture will be sucked out from your paint into the plaster, and in future, flaking will happen. To ease your mind, just request for a sealant irregardless of what the contractor says. Source: http://www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects/paintnewplaster.htm
  10. Any other companies besides Legate that supply invisible grilles too?

  12. Hi everyone, Currently we just bought a resale HDB flat where there is already a build-in wardrobe there. The bed will be in this location since that's the place we can put. Please see pic below. Since this is the master bedroom, so the head of the household will be sleeping in it. But in terms of fengshui, it is no good for the toilet door (in circle) to be facing where the head is sleeping right? So I suggest not to use this room but the room furthest to the right. The size is about the same. But my spouse insist on using the MBR as he loves the balcony. He suggests to tear down the existing wardrobe and erect a new walk-in wardrobe to block the toilet door. But I find that it will make the room smaller and reduce ventilation of the MBR toilet. Moreover, the wardrobe is still in good condition that I find it a waste to dispose of it. I am thinking of consulting a FSM, but I think there could just plain and practical common sense way to do it before I consult one. Do note that the MBR leftmost wall is facing west.
  13. Does it look something like an awning? If so, it is not allowed by regulation. Any fixtures that is mounted on the external facade of the building is not allowed. I approached town council before as I wanted to install a clothes hanging rack out of the windows.
  14. Hi Everyone, I'm interested in installing Vinyl Plank Flooring in my 2 bathrooms. Anybody has done this and would like to share your experiences? I like the look of wood grains designs in vinyl and yet they will not absorb water and swell like laminates or wood. Will vinyl be slippery when wet ? And will it withstand wet washing consistently? Thanks for your feedback.
  15. Maybe you could consider approaching those companies / shops in the industrial parks? They are definitely cheaper. I don't have any contact on hand now. Sorry not much help here.
