  1. Here is a picture of our completed study room carpentry - gotta love the black and white look. A view from inside the kitchen with the folding doors closed Nice big drawers in our kitchen setup. We've got 6 of these bad boys which will provide us with plenty of storage of big pots or appliances. A nice shot of the lower cabinets, square tiles and wall lights with the roller blinds down Our black framed shower screen up in the MBR toilet! Looking good if I may say so myself We opted for a half shower screen so that 1) it looks nicer and 2) there would be less glass to clean. Speaking about cleaning glass, has anyone used rainex or any other water repellant on their shower screen glass? Might be easier to clean and maintain I was thinking.
  2. Carpentry Done! Just before I left for HK, I dropped by our place and was very excited to see all the carpentry items up. The plank feature wall was completed and cabinet doors all went up. Certainly was a great way to start the weekend! Here are the pictures: Completed full height cabinet cum bar counter area in the living room. The leftmost door is supposed to be painted with chalkboard paint to write our menu for the day etc, and perhaps uplifting messages for each other. Will post again when we've painted the door! Apologies for the poor lighting as some of our light switches have not been fixed up yet. Quite happy with the contrast of the wood colour and graphite. Our completed plank feature wall! The wife and I are pretty happy with how this turned out - no regrets over forgoing the white brick wall. Now just waiting for the light switches and sockets to go up. Btw, there is a space where the study room door used to be - the contractors took it back to alter because we complained that the door could not open fully into the room. A closer look at the wall - I must say that the workmanship on the wall was pretty good. The guy who did this for the first time must have taken quite a bit of pride in his work. It wasn't easy and I can see that it required a lot of work! Check out how they cut the side panels below Kitchen cabinet doors all up. Too bad the quartz top and glass backsplash is not in yet though, those would really complete the look. Anyway, we made a conscious decision to make the wood laminate grains run horizontally to elongate the kitchen and make it look a little more streamlined. Yard area, where the washing machine and dryer will be housed: Pardon the mess, they still haven't fully cleaned up the space yet. When I went down they were rushing to pack up and get out of there!
  3. Greetings from HK! I'm here for a week visiting the wife and so will not be able to drop by the house to check on progress. Hope everything is going well though. Anyway, we dropped by this really awesome store just yesterday in Wan Chai called mrBlacksmith selling mostly industrial items, some of which are apparently made by them. They also have quite a cool selection of small wares and knick knacks. I think this could possibly be the BEST STORE EVER for the industrial themed home. However, their prices are also jawdroppingly expensive. Whatever the case, if you're in HK, it is worth a visit just for the inspiration you will get from this place. http://www.mrblacksmith.hk/ Their website doesn't show or say alot, but trust me, it's a store worth visiting even if you don't buy anything. We also made our way down to Horizon Plaza today, which is a 28 storey building of pure outlet shopping. Let's just say that this is the place for rich people to outlet shop, since the prices are still expensive even after discount. For furniture and home accessories, they have stores such as G.O.D, FrancFranc, TREE and a pretty good local store called Indigo Living. We came out of the shopping trip with only 2 cushions and a black wine rack since everything else was so expensive. Is this place worth another visit? I'm not so sure.
  4. ya my wife just said the same thing, it looks like those black and white colonial buildings!! v v nice. Let's start a trend guys. The people doing the black aluminium frame doors will be very very busy soon I'm guessing. Looking good EMinlove. mavicaste, now we waiting on you and your doors alr.
  5. wow Harriette, that's a fantastic idea, but how do you incorporate the docking stations into the design? is there gonna be a revolving door for the roomba to go through? heh Hi EMinlove! I stopped by your blog earlier and saw that your black framed doors and panels are already up too, well done and congrats!! They really look awesome as expected. Also loving your chalkboard shoe cabinet - just beautiful. Everyone uses those black and white blinds nowadays, but I can't help but use it too cos it's very pretty and fits into our theme. You will not regret the choice as well. Hey your style and reno deco is super awesome as well!! I actually find that the hardest part is really to decorate the place in style, putting in personalized items, choosing art and knick knacks seem like a terribly difficult thing to me. We'll see how it goes. Wah self invite ah bro, haha. If I do open house you'll be bringing the alcohol??
  6. I shy la bro, hahahha. Nothing to see yet most welcome! it's quite a significant decision so take your time with it.
  7. thanks peacejr! Was originally quite scared that the quality of the pd doors would be poor, but the frosted glass panels and aluminium frame give it a nice solid feel. Much better than acrylic. ok OceanEleven already answered this for me (thanks buddy) haha. The question is how big your one panel is. If it can't fit in the lift then it's really difficult for them to move it up the stairs, not to mention costly and dangerous since it's glass. I'll just share what my contractor said, which is big panels look good but are more prone to breakage. Let's just say if *touchwood* your big panel shatters for whatever reason, you're going to have to replace the entire panel as opposed to a segment of the panels. So you might want to consider the safety, practicality and cost for the issue of the panels What you could do is to do away with the horizontal bar in the middle, giving you 2 or 3 long panels. As you alr pointed out though, the segmented panels give it a more industrial feel. Depending on your lighting, the shadows can be minimized I suppose.
  8. oh no sorry about to hear about the story of your engagement ring. Hey, at least you can look forward to another prezzie from the hubby ya? Who knows, you may actually still find it hiding in a corner of your house somewhere one fine day? Be hopeful!
  9. sorry to hear about the delay in getting your flat! The most frustrating period is when you're almost there and you can smell it but something comes in to throw it off its course. I know how you feel cos we also experienced some delay in the completion of our flat. Hang in there, it will all be worth it
  10. many thanks claypot don't use the word 'copy' bro, sounds so negative. Use the phrase "draw inspiration from". LOL This kind of thing no need to paiseh. I also "draw inspiration from" alot of other people in this forum. We're all here to learn and share our ideas!
  11. thank you gomugomu! wow you're thinking of a smeg? that alone is probably more than the cost of the bar counter cum display cabinet isn't it? Haha. Well life is about deciding between competing choices, so good luck on choosing the right one =) For our laminate feature wall, the first step was to create the plywood backing so that the laminate tiles can be mounted on top. Then the carpenters cut out individual planks to be pasted onto the plywood backing. The last step is then to mount the switches and sockets etc onto the wall. Our tv console is not built in, but will be pushed all the way to the feature wall. Since there is a gap in the middle of our tv console to place the Starhub box, amplifier etc, the tv console will cover the switches and sockets quite neatly! thanks for the kind comments Songz. We are glad we went ahead with the plank wall although we hadn't a slightest clue how it would turn out.
  12. WOW your carpentry is super chio. Jealous!! Especially your blum drawers, those are super nice. We couldn't afford the drawers themselves, so we're only getting blum tracks. Your carpenter really did an amazing job. Well done.
  13. Some more house updates - it's really starting to come together eh? We've really come a long way haven't we. Just seems like yesterday that our place was an empty shell, but put a door here, a cupboard there, some lighting and the place is instantly transformed. It's really great to see this all happen in front of our eyes, and we are glad to be sharing this journey with you fine folks. Anyway, thanks for all the support and comments thus far! So the evorich tiles are up, the skeletals of our carpentry are also up and more recently the lights, blinds and some toilet accessories here and there. Ok here are some pics! This is the display cum bar cabinet that we are quite excited about. The charcoal coloured center will be left open and it will house things like our coffee machine, wine bottles and well as wine glasses. We will also be able to mix and prepare some simple cocktail drinks here. As you can see, we did away with internal laminates cos (1) they are expensive and (2) we don't want to bust our budget too much. For something which eventually will have doors, I think it's something we can live with. Here is the laminate panel and tictac door to hide our storeroom. You may ignore our topless friend there. We clad the panels in the same laminate as the kitchen cabinets for uniformity. Yes! Bathroom doors are up - nice frosted glass panels with a black powder coated alum frame. It is the same for the MBR toilet. The uncompleted living room feature wall, but you can see where this is going. Quite pleased with the look of it, though the wife did mention it would have looked nicer if it were more rugged. I think I agree. A closer look at the laminate panels for the feature wall. Last picture for the lot, our study room blinds! Very pleased with the look of it, and even more pleased that it covers up our orange framed windows. haha
  14. Actually I think the vacuum robot has become one of the MUST HAVE things in the house. In our time pressed society, all the household chores can really add up especially if you don't have a maid. Investing in a good vacuum robot is really the way to go IMHO. Spend your precious time with your loved ones instead I heard initially it takes a bit of time to program the robot correctly but once it is set up, it's just plug and play. More well behaved than most kids, can go back to it's home after it's done haha. thanks! it's a smooth and matte surface, find it quite nice to walk on actually. hello kelhy, we will be trying out a "laminate plank" feature wall which we thought would be quite cool and different from the ubiquitous brick wall. They will basically paste the laminate on some wood, and then cut them into various sizes of planks before finally pasting them onto the plywood board wall thereafter. I do have some pictures of the half completed wall which I will post real soon. thanks fellow Anchorvale neighbour! PM-ed! jialat la I'm earning a bad rep in renotalk hahaha. Ok the reason why your man is pestering you to get one is simple - I'm guessing if you don't do the cleaning in the home, he will end up having to do it! hahaha. Bro, too harsh la. Not the camera man fault, but the camera. Blame HTC one. hahah Anyway, thanks for dropping by earlier. When is it my turn to go over to yours? Lol
  15. you guys are relatively close to Sengkang MRT right? so lucky!
  16. Lights continued & other purchases A close up of our kitchen wall lights - the lamps came bigger than originally expected, but hey it still looks good! The wife says that it's a bit too high though. What do you guys think? Anyway, we're gonna keep the plastic cover on the lights until all the works are completed. Still pretty dusty and dirty in the house after all the carpentry and electrical works. A side shot of our bedside table lamp. Out of all the lights, I would say that the quality of these lights are the lousiest of the lot - think it has to do with the number of joints it has. Also, the metal plate mounted onto the wall is a bit thin and flimsy. Not sure if it can withstand the weight of the lamp in a couple of years. I suspect we'll have to change it further down the road. The fancy Edison bulbs for our kitchen dining lights just came too! Very excited to see the beautiful filament patterns. LED Track spotlights - we will be using around 6 x 5w lights to light up our WIW. Good thing with tracklights is that you can focus on the spots you want to. For these particular lights from taobao, they came in a size much bigger than expected. Not as nice as the ones made in Germany that they sell at Chan Huat etc. Oh well, for the price you pay, can't really complain. At most just change when it's spoilt. Our fan finally got fixed up and I must say it looks fantastic. It has a matte finish and although we haven't tested the wind speed, the blades look like they can generate some serious air. Very happy with this purchase. Sometime last week I was researching on robot vacuum cleaners and came across this thread on hardwarezone: http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/home-decor-furnishings-188/lg-roboking-3692302.html Having been impressed so much by the reviews, I immediately msged E and told her that we need to get it haha. It is available in Singapore via autovacstore for $908 or from QOO10 for $699. Just so happened that the QOO10 store was having a promo price at $599 so I immediately bought it. Free delivery summore! Will do a review of it once we start using it.
  17. thanks for dropping by and for your input getzski. I haven't even thought that far about dampening the washer and dryer yet but now that you mention it, it makes perfect sense! In fact everybody should do this. Just curious, which brand of dampening or soundproofing material did you use and where did you get it from?
  18. Lights, Camera, Action Things have been moving at a slower pace that we'd like. The carpenters have been kindda missing in action these 1 or 2 days and I suspect it's because everyone is waiting for the quartz top to be delivered. However, the lights and some bathroom accessories have finally made their way into their respective places in our house, so that's been pretty exciting to see. Here are some pictures for you to see see look look First up, our so called "lighting plan" - sibei amateur Most of the 'X's indicate where our downlights will be. The yellow strips indicate LED lighting strips and the others are self explanatory. We're going full out on the layering of the MBR lights which include a 2 m tracklight for the WIW, a dresser feature light, 2 rows of cove lighting, 5 downlights w dimmer function, 2 bedside lamps and 2 recessed twin-headed downlights. Some of these will be remote controlled which will give us the flexibility to play around with the lights depending on the mood or occasion. Our trio of kitchen wall lights to act as additional task lighting. Not too sure if it's overkill to have them all placed at such a short distance apart but I suppose it's always better to have more rather than less lighting. E's overhead dressing table feature lights. This will be supplemented by LED light strips bordering her dresser mirror. MBR with downlights on. Still missing the 2 twinhead recessed downlights below. All our switches and sockets at home are from Schneider Electric's Vivace series as part of the electrician's package.
  19. Most welcome! Excited to see what you will be purchasing from them, do upload the pics in time to come. Tell me about it. From our walkabouts along Balestier and through browsing on taobao, we found that prices for the bigger lighting fixtures were generally twice as expensive here in Singapore, sometimes even 3 times more expensive. But then you're not paying for rental and labour costs in Singapore when you buy from taobao, so not surprising that it's that much cheaper. Of course, you may end up with a lousy product as well or it may come broken, so caveat emptor still applies haha.
  20. wah your electrical works finished faster than mine. Then again, it's cos some of my lights from taobao have yet to arrive. haha. Any reason why you chose legrand over schneider?
  21. hey, we are guilty of that too, the copy and paste part that is. haha. we are all here to learn and share with each other after all. We get so jealous sometimes when we see other people's houses on renotalk that we decided when we got our place we were going to do it up nicely and as best as we can too. Hi Danmify, yup the lights are from taobao and costs about $220 thereabouts including shipping. hey mavicaste! I would say the products come as described and as pictured, but in terms of quality I wouldn't say that it's outstanding. It is however decent and as some people have suggested in this forum, it would be better if you got lights with less (moving) parts. For the bedside table lamps that we got, they came with many joints to when we move it about we got to be extra careful or we may risk damaging the fixtures themselves. But July's selection is pretty good and the products came well packed, so it has at least that going for them.
  22. We're installing it tomorrow! For the big laminate pieces, you might have to make an appt to go down to their actual showroom (though I didn't) if you want to see the real deal. An easier (though less accurate) way is to just download the pdf file from their online catalogue by clicking on the code you want and then the downward arrow button.
  23. I also had the same problem, but I think the problem is because the floors are uneven. Before Evorich lays the tiles, gotta get your contractor to make sure that the floors are completely even, as far as possible. For our unit, the contractor did a terrible job leveling up certain parts of the ground, so we're getting them to remove the HERF, rectify and re-laying it again.
  24. wah your contractor sounds very steady! Looks like everything is falling into place really nicely for you. I think we are at about the same stage of completion now bah. I'm sure you're feeling just as excited as we are to see everything go up it their rightful place. Post more pictures when your stuff is up!
