Ge 2011 Talk

Recommended Posts

How can a 27 yr old "elite" enters into politic to serve the general commoners, with too little yrs of working experience & worse part seen here that has been defended by the seniors and this elite has to hide behind the screen set up by the elites, in order to survive. This indicates 100% that elites protect "elite would be". Who suffer during the process? You know I know. Why the seniors talk so much, a fact is a fact.

Commoners pay to help building elites without realising.

if elites are chosen to manage, thats fine. what happens when the elite turns out to be not so "elite" after all? :P

heard a joke that even if u put a monkey together with the senior elite for GRC, the monkey will still "swing" his way into becoming a minister...

well, GRC often gave those they want a back door into becoming a "ministar". Like our dear MBT. :)

That's the elite policy's "wonderful system" - voters have no choice but to vote the monkey into parliament.

Getting more "Generals" into parliament, if you notice. The "original 4 generals", one of whom couldn't handle the job well during SAR period, but still remain in the cabinet because of strong backer(PM) who were army buddies, bo paiseh. Luckily our dear Khaw did a good job.

PAP MPs cannot say "I don't know", can say " let me find out more".

Mrs Chiam said "correct me if I'm wrong" over TV and telecasted, finished liao. Showed humble in the wrong way, but show her ignorance.

Sorry to steal this thread to vent my frustration. Just sign up an ipeptition tp ask Ms Tin to contest in SMC instead. http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/tinpeiling/

Reasons being:

- PAP has kept on stressing merit system, and this this the right time for Ms Tin to show her strength to contest in SMC, based on her merit, but not "hide" under the elite's system of GRC, to go into parliament.

- I guess PAP has seriously failed to understand the "common sense" and feelings of the commoners and does things one-way, to achieve its goals. It's its one-way wish to get youngster (Generals later)into parliament by GRC method. To sit in parliament has to be "somebody" with some weight lah, wake up!

Hope PAP can make a U-turn before too late.

Ris Low received no money from tax payers. If TPL kena MP, then tax payers have to pay for her MP allowance. If she enters parliament based on one-to-one ANC, I'll be willing to pay.

somehow the TPL episode is like a mini Ris Low epidsode! :P

PAP not out of touch: Foreign Minister George Yeo

Foreign Minister George Yeo has rejected claims the ruling People's Action Party is out of touch as "completely untrue".

Speaking to Yahoo! Singapore in a frank and honest one-on-one interview, the 56-year-old Minister said, "I know what I do as an MP and what my colleagues do. We spend a lot of time just working with ordinary people... We can't solve all problems but we do what we can."

He added, "So I would say we are more in touch than those who criticise us for being out of touch."

Even as the Singapore economy shot out of the blocks from the 2008 financial crisis to a record 15% growth in 2010, concerns about the rising cost of living, competition with foreign workers and housing issues have dominated discussions both online and in coffee shops around Singapore.

The year 2010 was also dominated by headlines surrounding the escape of Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) terror leader Mas Selamat and recurring flash floods around several areas of Singapore.

Asked about what kind of report card he would give the PAP for its performance over the last few years, Minister Yeo said it was not fair for him to assess he and his own PAP colleagues.

"It's hard, I mean here you are putting me in a position of a student and I cannot be writing a report card on myself. But if you take a step back, and compare Singapore to other countries... in every country, what sets their success or failure in the end is politics," he said.

But the Member of Parliament for Aljunied GRC encouraged voters to look at the big picture ahead of the impending General Election.

"If you are to rank countries, Singapore comes right near the top. And people marvel, you have nothing, just a little speck of land, but out of it, just harnessing the ability, the energy of individuals we are able to accomplish so much," he said.

During the hour-long interview at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Tanglin, he also addressed those who were frequently critical of the PAP.

"Even those who are anti-PAP, who are critical, when they travel they feel so proud of being Singaporeans... When they come home, the moment they get the SIA boarding pass, there's a flutter in their hearts...yes, I'm on my way home."

For more on Minister Yeo's interview with Yahoo! Singapore, listen here.

In the next part of our interview with the Minister, he talks about social media and the effect it will have on the Election.

‘PM Lee, I don’t get upgrading, can I pay less tax?’

An engineering student living in Hougang Single-Member Constituency (SMC) ward posed a candid question to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on whether he could pay less tax since the opposition-held ward does not enjoy upgrading programmes.

At the Kent Ridge Ministerial Forum organised by the National University of Singapore (NUS) Students' Political Association on Tuesday, fourth-year engineering student Seah Yin Hwa, 25, asked PM Lee why residents living in Hougang SMC are penalised for picking "a 'Teochew nang' (dialect for Teochew person) who doesn't wear a white uniform."

When asked by PM Lee on how he was penalised, Seah said, "When it comes to upgrading, what is being told to us is that we don't have the funds to actually go ahead with lift upgrading, as well as shelters to the bus stops. When I look across the road to Aljunied GRC, they have everything."

Paraphrasing the question posed, PM Lee said that what Mr Seah meant is why the opposition wards are not treated at least as good, or maybe even better than the PAP wards.

PM Lee added, "And the answer is that there has to be a distinction. Because the PAP wards supported the Government and the policies which delivered these good things."

He said that while the basic goods such roads, transportation, housing, healthcare and defence apply to Singaporeans, the extras — which come down to the upgrading programmes — is a national programme.

"Between the people who voted and supported the programme and the government, and the people who didn't, I think if we went and put yours before the PAP constituencies, it would be an injustice," PM Lee told the 1,200 students at the forum.

In response to PM Lee, Seah cheekily asked if he could pay less tax and maybe "take one or two years off my NS?", which drew laughter and applause from the audience.

But PM Lee said that this is not possible because the SAF, defence, taxes and all the facilities which have been provided, are enjoyed by every Singaporean.

Rounding off his reply, PM Lee said, "But you can do something about it, you know. You don't have to keep voting for people not in white-on-white."

PM Lee explains ministerial salaries

The contentious issue on ministerial salaries was also discussed at the forum after a Nanyang Technological University (NTU) accountancy student brought it up, comparing the salaries of leaders from Singapore and the United States.

"The US president is actually paid less than a Cabinet minister in Singapore. I'm sure we agree his job is a lot tougher than our Cabinet ministers," said the student.

In his response, PM Lee said that US President Barack Obama may be earning less than a Singaporean minister, but the American system is not without its flaws.

For example, he highlighted that the US had different ways of rewarding its presidents and that the low salary of the president had suppressed salaries down the line, reported The Straits Times.

Explaining his first point, PM Lee said that former US presidents are involved in money-spinning book and lecture tours which are almost a tradition for them.

"Retired US presidents go on book tours, they write books, they are paid US$10 million (S$13 million) advance, they get somebody to help them write a tome and they make a lecture tour…Every lecture (by former president) Bill Clinton: US$100,000 to US$200,000 for half an hour.

"That's the system. I think that's not a good system for us. We don't want ministers to retire and go on lecture tours."

Touching on his second point, PM Lee discussed the impact that the low salary of US presidents had on the rest of the civil service.

"Because the president's pay being set at a level which is not quite right, all the rest of the civil service and government pay in the US system has to take dressing from there and come down…and come down," he said.

PM Lee also stressed that Singapore's ministerial pay system was one that works.

But when asked if salaries should still be pegged to the private sector given the many candidates taken from the civil service and unions, he replied, "The reason I can get good people from the Government and the unions is that I have a pay system which is working properly.

"People do not enter politics to get rich but neither will they enter politics and as a result, they and their family will become poor."

He added, "It is something which is not easy to accept emotionally but is the right thing for Singapore. If you want the system to work for the long term, you must be honest about it. What do I pay for? I pay for the importance of the job and how difficult it is to do…"

I am proud to be a singaporean. It doesn't mean that i am proud of your PAP. It's dangerous that he actually associated our country, Singapore = PAP.
