  1. I know that the HDB guidelines state that you can only extend the bathroom by 600mm or 0.6msq, and only used as dry area. Later on, I saw a couple of floor plans that actually extended the boundary of the bathroom more than 600mm out. One person actually commented that "the HDB guideline technically means: 600mm is the distance of your wash basin's pipehole to the original bathroom boundary". Meaning to say, as long as the piping of the wash basin is within 600mm distance of the original bathroom boundary, you can build the new walls however big as you want. Can anybody confirm this? Attaching my floor plan for reference

  3. I decided to write about my "resale flat" reno (I lump under this category as flat is 16YO!) which cost us less than $10k for - 2 new bathrooms - 1 slightly remodelled kitchen, - 3 new cabinets - whole housepainting excl ceiling which was painted 4 years ago - plus miscellaneous like hacking and dismantling Hopefully, this will help homeowners on a budget save money, and I'm also hoping to do a good one for my contractors and to give credit to these good contractors, many of whom are not tech-savvy and do not know how to promote their biz! Good things must share right? 😁 first, to clarify, the reno is akin to that of a resale flat cos my 5-room is 15 1/2 years old. We stayed for 6 years, rented out for 9 years, then decided to move back. We have always DIY-ed our reno and this time is no exception. No doubt interior designers may give a more polished look but they charge a 33% premium, and I'd rather stretch my dollar to do more stuff! Of course, these disgusting toilets had to go first! The tenants have trashed them up so badly, they are worse than public toilets! Sorry if I spoilt your appetite for a meal! I nearly threw up when I came to inspect the premises!🤑
  4. Living in a 20+ years 4-room HDB flat. That was the only renovation then. Have an elder with walking and balancing issues. I would like to do a full renovation for both the master2 and common1 toilets in two separate sessions. URGENT, the common one first. The master can wait. Top priority, I would like to reduce the toilet entrance kerbs’ height, ~11cm2 and ~10cm1. There are shower separation kerbs for both toilets at ~6cm high. I am considering doing away this shower kerb separator because I do not intend to install any shower screen which are dismantled a couple years back. Not sure whether it’s a good idea. Both toilet bowls and basins to be replaced. Smaller sizes for the common toilet. Basin and 2/3 way taps too. Naturally, water pipes will be replaced. PVC, stainless steel or copper? To install water shut-off valves for future repairs/replacements. Both toilet doors to be replaced too. Non-glass. Translucent or opaque? I was considering cement for the toilet walls and floors. However, I have seen pictures in this forum and read about it elsewhere. Seems like not a good idea for toilets. But I don't really like tiles. Why? They are popping off the walls. The gaps in between the tiles, dirt and mould are corrected. Tiles or cement? If tiles (anti-slip a must), I prefer white. A white clean toilet look. I may have to replace both instant water heaters too. Or should I go for a central storage water heater? Not sure how much electrical work is needed. No change in toilet lighting. Undecided to put electrical socket inside the toilet for stuff like hair dryer or shifting the water heater switch inside. Grab bars and accessories, to be determined. I have done a quick shop at IMM and I do not think I need an interior designer for the toilets. I just want a function toilet (both) for the elderly. It should be bright and spacious with normal maintenance. I spoke to a bathroom accessory store and was advice to seek a contractor before purchasing any toilet item e.g. toilet bowel and basin measurements. The store staff gave me a contractor’s contact too. I am considered a newbie at this. I am not sure whether I should go a toilet renovation package found online. A quick Google search and the results kept directing me to one particular company. I have a small budget in mind and have very little time. I need to get the common toilet done by the end of June. The average reno cost I have gathered is about 4K per toilet. Budget is tight. How should I approach this? Contractor recommendation? I need as little complications as possible for this renovation.

  7. May i ask if anyone has puchased mixer, rain shower from bathroom warehouse? Hows the quality for their inhouse brand h+m? Any other brands/shops to recommend? Thanks in advance
  8. Hello guys, I have a problem with the air and sewage pipe that runs up the middle of my bathroom area. My contractor has kindly boxed it up nicely, but it looks really big and disruptive to the space (like a structural column just popped up). My question is, can it be done any better? Is there a minimum thickness for the calcium silicate boards and metal framework used to box up the area? Suggestions and solutions much appreciated. (These pipes are terminated at the top with a false ceiling that covers all the "twists and turns", so what needs to be concealed from the bottom to the top is just a straight pipe.) Thank you :) Regards from a New Homeowner

  10. Hi all, Im looking to renovate my home’s 2 bathroom and kitchen sink area. ID quoted $25K which I thought was rather expensive and wanted to get a 2nd opinion. ID did not mention floor area of work (cpsf). 2 bathrooms: - hacking of floor and wall tiles. Screed and tile relay. - Installation of bathroom fixtures and stainless steel pipe replacement. This alone costed close to $12K. - swing and slide doors installation Kitchen: - main work at sink area (est 5ft), including design and fabricate sink bottom with laminate finish with trimming door. - fabrication and design of dish rack on TOP of sink area.
  11. Buying a resale 3i hdb flat and looking for proven solution on the net. As you all may already know, 3i hdb flat comes with two separate cubicles, 1 wc, 1 bathroom. which is only 1.68m in length, with the bathroom slightly wider than the wc cubicle by 1.5m Vs 1m. Most likely, I will be renting out the common room of the 3i flat. What i'm thinking is to seal up the bathroom door, and hack the wall connecting to the masterbedroom. Means now, the "attached" bathroom is only for bathing and a sink. Next,is to install a shower in the wc cubicle, which i know is pretty cramp. So that tenant(s) can use the 'common' toilet for their showering. My biggest concern is this. This maybe a show stopper for me to rent out, as tenants may feel the wc cubicle is now for 'wc' AND showering. Since HDB does not allow a second wc to be installed in the 'attached' bathroom, guess i have to make do with sharing the 'throne' with tenants. Does anyone has a better solution for this 3i bathroom? Or what's your take on this 3i wc/toilet issue?
  12. Hi, Just got a resale HDB flat and need minor reno. Am a reno newbie so hoping some of the old-timers here can help me out a little. Just wondering... if I need to change a kitchen sink, I understand I will also need to remove/re-tile the counter top for that area (the previous owner put the sink in the service-balcony area so it's sort of separate from the rest of the cooking/work-top areas). But do contractors do just that small amount of work? Or should I just get a plumber/tiler who can also do that + change toilet bowls + wash basin? Sorry if this sounds silly, just not sure if I should find individual vendors or get a contractor. Thank you in advance for your advice/help! cheers, WH
  13. Hi everyone, anyone can help me pls. The toilet outlet is very near the wall, hence looking for toilet bowl model that can fit my bathroom. Any recommendation? My ID say need P Trap model. So I'm thinking Inspire 6075. http://www.watertapz.com.sg/CERA-MIQ-6075 Any advise please msg me.

  16. After 20 years of living in my apartment, the kitchen and bathrooms are getting old. For examples: 1) the bathtub has a few chipped surfaces in a few areas; 2) the kitchen and bathroom wall tiles are showing some small cracks; 3) the vanity top has a few chipped surfaces and small cracks. Instead of doing the standard hacking and renovating which can get very messy and noisy as the occupants have to continue to live in the apartment, I am exploring the option of refinishing and reglazing the affected bathtub, vanity top, and wall tiles. Has anyone done this in your home before? Does the finishing quality looks good? Do the refinished/reglazed surfaces have quality issues such as peeling, cracking, bumps, etc.? Do you have any good contractors to recommend if you are pleased with the outcomes of your refinishing/reglazing work? Thanks!
  17. What to use to seal back the rubber of bathroom transparent door? Does silicone help? (Can see the picture attached?)
  18. Hi My bathroom sink got detached due to too much loading. Luckily there are brackets which prevented it from falling to the floor. Any recommendation on who to engage to fix this, and and idea of how much it would cost ? If I want to DIY, any suggestion on how? I found this video but I wonder how to keep the sink in place for my situation while the silicone cures. Thanks! Photo of bracket captured from below the sink :

  20. We just bought a resale 4-room HDB. It is about 10 years. The previous owner did not do renovation for bathroom before, so everything is from HDB. The existing wall tile looks okay to me but the flooring is a bit messy due to wear and tear. Here is some photos: I was thinking to hack everything(wall and fooling) and lay new tiles. Then I found it's a bit expensive for us. (after get some quotations) Just want to ask for advice if it is okay I just overlay the floor tile. Then I can save money for hacking and laying wall tile. Of course I do not want to save money now then later end up with spending more to fix in the future.
  21. Hi guys, do you all have any contacts for wash basin and cabinet installation? I have already bought the basin and the cabinet (the type which is below the basin), so now am looking for a contact which can help me do the installation. Thanks in advance!
  22. Most people choose to have their bathroom designs as bare as possible, especially when it comes to the toilet and shower stall. Of course, this does not mean that that simple design is not or cannot become interesting in its own capacity. But, there are actually many models of bathroom designs that you could use to make your bathroom much more interesting like Natural themes.
  23. Hello everyone, I am a newbie here, and hope to ask a question to the renovation veterans on this forum. I am thinking of buying an HDB, and plan to do the renovation as indicated in the figure below. What is my chance of getting HDB to approve this renovation plan? I need to know my chance before buying this flat -- if the chance is too low, I might give up on this flat -- since I really want to have a 1.7m long bathtub. I really appreciate your expert opinions on this. Thanks! Alan.
  24. Hello, does anyone know whether it is possible to move the position of floor traps in the bathroom/kitchen of an apartment? Some of them are in the middle of the room and i would prefer them to be at a corner instead. OCD issue. Otherwise, is it possible to totally get rid of them from the bathroom/kitchen (i.e. renovate such that no floor traps at all in the bathroom/kitchen)? For example, i know bathrooms and kitchens in the UK do not have any floor traps in them. Thanks in advance for your help and insights.
  25. $25. A mirror with real wooden frame. Purchased from Courts Tampines - never used and still all wrapped up.
