  1. I think you are really getting too sensitive and confused. I had tried to explain to you but I guessed it had fallen on deaf ears; nobody is lambasting the white people here! Its the system that we are not happy about, the attitude of our OWN Singaporeans favouring the whites. If you had not done this experiment before, I will be quite surprised: Try asking for a favour at any customer service centres, restaurants, hotels, etc. You go alone, then next time ask your husband to go with you or alone. See the results and you will know. In fact this actually happened during my own housewarming - my bosses were here, three australians, plump, short and not really handsome or anything. As they head for the door to leave, some of my friends/relatives who are sitting along the way would stand up, smile broadly and shake their hands to say goodbye. Respect, just being friendly, you say? Guess what? Some of them had not visited my grandma in the old folks' home for the past four months. I did tried to ask one of them why she did that, even though knowing she will never see my bosses again or have anything to do with them in future, but she got no answer expect to smile sheepishly, "Duno leh, just a natural reaction..."
  2. Wow u managed to find an article relating to both cases! So you see, whether its the driver or the pedestrian, the white man always wins...
  3. Yeah lor, I just joined their forum. Let's see what happens...the photos seemed very interesting... I also never go swiss before but if go there sure must go ski lah, nothing wrong mah. When u intend to go?
  4. Wow, sounds quite fun hor?? Wifey and me always avoided tours because always got old folks (not that we don't like old people but expectations different mah, eg old folks tend to like sightseeing but we want to SHOP and have fun!) and so very sianz. If this tour really is really for those aged 18 to 35's then want to find out more liao...
  5. Are you talking about the old coffeeshop directly across the road from our blocks?? Yes that is very good, but some would find it too oily with too much sesame oil. For me I just love it lor...hehe...with dark soya sauce and chilli, both sauces thick-thick one, never mix water like other stalls...yumm... !!
  6. Yeah I remembered that case as well; so the same saying still applies lor, when the white man is driving, you better watch out also, whether the traffic light is red man or green man. Remind me of the funny kopi uncle at a coffeeshop near my office. Whenever he is serving hot drinks, he would shout: "SIAM HOR!! LONG TIO BO PUAY EH HOR!!!" (Move away! No compensation if you get knocked!) Sorry if in any way I sounded racist to you, but really I am picking at the system, not the foreigners. Its the system/situation that had caused them to behave in this way, they are not to blame. We are all humans, if we go to other countries and get treated like kings and queens, surely some of us will take advantage of it too. Let's not get too excited the moment someone mentioned anything to do with race...
  7. Yup, in particular I recalled how a Singaporean driver who was turning a corner and hit a white jaywalker. She was charged for negligence, even though the court acknowledged that the jaywalker was in fault; she should have kept a lookout so she was fined and barred a number of years from driving. But what really irks me is that the white family actually sued the driver successfully for a compensation of millions of dollars! So the saying goes: "On Singapore roads, its not the red man, not the green man but the WHITE man that you need to lookout for!!" As long as it involves a white man, traffic regulations suddenly don't matter anymore...
  8. You know what? If anyone would anything about this, its the MEDIA. BTW if you want to keep the video, can use http://ripvideo.net/
  9. Saw this some time ago, when they posted as "slowest taxi in Southeast Asia". The video had since been taken down by the guy, probably kana lambasted very badly, email-box all full or something. Frankly, chunky, I dun think the authorities will do anything here - they had not broken any law. And sorry to say, this is a case of whites bullying a local, nothing will probably be done. Can't say the same if there's a video of locals bullying a white; they track them down in no time. This is not a racist comment, mind you, its just how our system works in Singapore, if you haven't already known. BTW the old man is always at the clarke quay or boat quay area, in his usual gang of trishaws. Maybe if can find him then can shed some light. Unfortunately cannot see the taxi number, otherwise can also hunt down the driver to see whether these jokers are tourists, international students or working here.
  10. Hey congrats!! Finally your turn to start reno ahh! Hehe... Make sure you take progressive photos of the reno, so that at the end you will find the end result really amazing. This is a very fun process, enjoy it!
  11. JS21, aiyo why you do reno until so stressed up?? Don't worry, like sakae sushi says, rule of thumb is, "no work done, no payment"! Frankly the terms that you wanted to put in are abit too detailed, which I also never do it (you can go ask my ID how niao I am). But its not a bad thing, but just that there is an easier way to do it. You can put a clause like "all materials, colours and measurements are subjected to selection and confirmation as signed by Client at no further cost unless otherwise stated herein". Voila, all the colours, materials, etc no need to state inside liao! Whenever he buys a material or custom-made a carpentry area, he got to give you a drawing or make a small note for you to sign in confirmation. Otherwise, no money! However, a point to note is that there are always stuff that last min need to change, like on-site situation that we will never be able to forecast. So in that sense we need to also remain abit flexible here lor... Regarding handover date, you already have a very strong point to make him handover on time: 30% payment upon handover! This is quite high, cuz most of us are only 10%, if not some are only 5%. So dun worry about handing over, he will be more anxious than you when comes to the time!
  12. You can try it out at the retail shop in Centrepoint, really good one lor. My wife and me had been organising group-buys with alot of our colleagues and friends...
  13. Hehe, their company name is being censored off by our admin, so what do you think?? If you like to be pushed around by ex-MLM sales guys (oops, sorry, its SALES DESIGNERS), explain a simple concept for a good half-hr before the 'so-called' designer will understand, pay $500 on first appt to 'book' exhibition package and end up with an expensive but simplistic decor, then sure, go for it! Otherwise, give their excellent offer a miss and go for other lousy IDs instead...
  14. Haha, ya I also read until I blur blur liao... Did you go and ask the forummer who had painted his door?? Hehe... For the rest, hehe not that I don't want to tell you but its other people's house so got to wait for him to answer... Think its because of the building designs, first look very nice like condo-style, but after awhile like not very practical. The airwells and wide corridors allow the litterbugs to fling stuff down without being caught. Even if police come and put a camera, may not catch him also, unless bring 40 cameras and put one at each floor, but in which case it will be too obvious and the litterbug will go into hiding! You should have taken a snap of the broken bottle and another snap of the airwell, then send in to stomp. Some reporters who got no stories to write will go in there to pick up stories, and voila! We got our publicity liao; next day HDB/TC officers' backsides all must apply butter thick-thick...
  15. Maybe wait for him to post here himself; not sure if he want to reveal or not...hehe...
  16. Is your toilet the same as mine; open the door you see the vanity on the left, toilet bowl in the middle and behind the opened door is the shower area? If so then its ok; I installed for mine and the shower area is still quite spacious, sit on toilet bowl open big big (oops) also can. I am on the plump side, unless you are even more plump than me (which is quite rare), then you should be able to fit in also lah...
  17. To tint your windows really dark, you dun need to spend so much on vkool; just the usual films can liao. Vkool is for those who do not want the heat yet still not dark.
  18. Yes I think they should cover this. The people at the centre are quite ok one, even my little complaints like main door doesn't close properly and bomb shelter door too tight, they also come and rectify.
  19. I hope you have more reasons to trust this contractor (eg got reliable referees, its your relatives' company, etc), rather than just trusting that "he concentrate on condos thus do not have HDB permit", because this excuse is used by many rogue contractors after their licences had been revoked. Its a fact that more than 80% of the population in Singapore stays in HDB flats; how many contractors can afford not to venture into this market? Please be careful and do more research before you sign up... If he is really so influential in the private properties' renovation that he could afford to ignore HDB projects and not have a HDB licence, why did he take up YOUR project?? Think about it...
  20. Maybe Jean can go find a good counsellor first, met up with him/her, and ask for advice on how to get the hubby to come, or maybe the counsellor can talk to the hubby on the phone or pay a house visit to the hubby. Take the first step and see how things go lor; I really don't have a sure-win advice for you, because going for counselling must be a willing party, he must be talked into it. Only Jean, relatives and/or close friends can help to persuade him to go; what to say, how to persuade, only you all know best.
  21. Most of the time, I think it would be like Cokelight's case, where the seller needs the transaction to go thru before they got money to pay for their next housing. Thus they cannot delay the 2nd appt. However, as above advised, you should treat it like you are renting to them; no need to sign tenancy agreement, but at least an agreement to say they will leave the place nicely. Whether to charge rental fees or not is up to you (for me I will charge), but you MUST at least get a deposit to make sure they do not leave the flat in a mess. Last but not least, you want to ask about legalities, yes it is ILLEGAL for others to stay in a flat when the owners are not staying there, unless the owners have approval from HDB to rent the unit out. Your newly-bought flat will never get approval for rental, so don't even try because it will alert the officers that you might rent illegally. In short, you must realise that you are doing a 'good deed' to let them stay, plus it will implicate you in the worst case scenerio. So its up to you whether want to be a nice buyer or not lor...
  22. I think there had been alot of assumptions on our part but the fact is, if her really hubby doesn't want to be with her, why doesn't he sign the separation letter? At this point, no matter how confident is Jean or you about the hubby's attitude, you are only at most 99% sure that he does not want the marriage. As long as he does not say the word "No", you cannot be 100% sure. Thus we cannot just assume he doesn't want to pay alimony, want to wait for better price to sell the flat, does not want counselling, or "judging from his behaviour", etc. Even if the wife judge her own hubby this way is unfair, somemore we are outsiders and judging him! Maybe I am being too optimistic, but the fact that he does not want to sign the papers goes to show that there is still a chance. In order to help your friend, you should try all means to get the counselling done. BTW counselling does not bring the couple together; counselling let the couple understand each other, understand themselves and let them decide if they should stay together. Many couples had actually go on separate ways after counselling, maybe they are very sad, maybe they will hate each other forever, but one thing for sure, there is an ENDING. Yes it might be very painful for Jean to hear from her hubby's own mouth that he does not love her anymore, but its more impt that she can move on. Forcing the hubby to sign the papers when the answer is not out yet will make her live in doubt forever; many years later, she will always think, "Does he really not love me??". Those of you, during our younger days, who have experience what we call the "silent break-up" will know what I meant - at one point or another until today, you are always wondering what will happen if you had been still together with that guy/gal, maybe she or he still loves you, maybe, maybe...
  23. I can't explain everything lah, but just like its an ugly culture for a man to maintain his wife even in today's modern society where both are equally educated and earning same salary, its also an ugly fact that man do take a serious note on physical appearance and attractiveness of their wives. Nothing is fair in the world mah, we just got to live with it lor. As for handphone password, well the next question is why would the wife want the password??
  24. One of the few occasions that I would agree with you. Let's not forget also that the Singaporeans asking for protection and spoonfeeding from the government are also the same people who lambaste our systems for being too rigid, "Law By Law", no democracy, no media freedom, etc. Classic example of wanting the whole cake and eat it too.
  25. Hehe, today very lethargic, slept and eat only, then go shopping in the evening, never do anything!! !! Hmmz I guess the grilles are really sharp huh? I think will standby newspapers and bubblepack to wrap first before moving them. BTW I suspect the grilles are cut on the spot after measuring the windows (which may explains why its so sharp), did you check if they are the same size? If not better label them first before keeping because next time take out duno which one goes where...
