  1. We need to fill up our stomach. You can do what you like provided you have a rich daddy, or you are financially stable. Ask yourself, by doing what you like, what are the risks and gains? Can you & your wife pay for the bills, be it housing, phone, electricity, transport, food etc? Alternative is, be practical now, try to save as much as you can, then do what you like later. I have been wanting to study TCM since years ago but no time & $ for it.
  2. Rang Mrs Quek just now to arrange for a day so that Patrick could drop by my place. She told me Patrick has been pretty busy these 2 days cos they gotten a new carpenter and Patrick was busy bringing him around. Looks like Ho Bee is not partnering with Ah Keong for reno projects. A total break off between them??
  3. Mine 3-room flat is > 30 years old, ceiling very low, not even 8.2 ft Got to drop the idea of putting ceiling fan due to the extremely low ceiling Yes, condo's ceiling is higher than HDB for sure.
  4. Yah, have to squeeze those sales guy real hard Is yours the Msian made series by Pergo? With 15 yrs warranty? How thick is the laminate, 12mm? A pretty good deal though, would recommend friends to go for it.
  5. I am using granite for my kitchen top. Blue Pearl from India. Maintenance is easy. In fact due to the dark colour, I can hardly see if it is dirty or not. So far, didn't see any ants on the top. Used to see 1 or 2 ants crawling on the floor when I moved in. My floor is light grey tiles. But they died after a few days cos couldn't find food in my house Colour should not be an issue, it is the leftover food on kitchen top that lure them
  6. First to spam chop Wah, your ID selection is so tough leh. Anyway, happy reno
  7. It probably won't look nice. 1/2 height, neither here nor there. Very old fashion too. The tiles for my kitchen wall is 1/2 height, done 30 years ago. I didn't hack the tiles to cut cost for my reno when I bought the flat few mths ago. Frankly speaking, a little bit regret cos don't find it nice now To cut cost, don't do wall tiles for kitchen lah, save the $ to do full wall for bathroom.
  8. tommy_moby used them for his house reno. He claimed that their workmanship is great and price reasonable too. Worth to consider. See his remarks here, http://www.renotalk.com/forum/lofiversion/...php?t12797.html
  9. Hi, you have to ask BlueFly as he was the one who gotten $4.50psf quote from Pergo. Try to pm him
  10. Hi guys, I have PMed the contact to you liao. That is for Japan-made pulley system. The lady is very friendly and knowledgeable. Feel bad that I didn't order my roller blinds from her I just want a cheapo blinds lor, so decided to go for Msia-made system
  11. Hi jeddie, my pulley system is not made in Japan though my fabric is from USA. My pulley system's technology is from Australia but made in Msia lah. If you want those Japan-made system, I will pm you another contact. Pretty cheap too. Use it as a comparison. Hi sparkles, what pulley system do you want? If you want Japan-made one, then more expensive. Mine is from Msia. Let me know so that I can pm you the contact. IKEA's roller blinds are cheap, but no customisation unless those they have can fit your windows size. Also, I realised their blinds are very long, more for full-length windows. Which I find it adds unnecessary weight to the pulley system if your windows are just half-length. So if the pulley system is not strong enough, don't know how long it can hold.
  12. Very curious leh apple jie jie, Human Social Biology was introduced in which year hah?
  13. Try this website, it will give you most of the info you need. http://www.hdb.gov.sg/bb33/ispm051p.nsf/Search It is not a matter of wise or not to buy old flats, sometimes, you just don't have a choice if you are looking at a particular area. For eg. I want to stay in TPY but there is no new 3-room flat in TPY, so I have to buy old resale flat. Of course there are newer 3-room flats in other areas like SK, I reckon. As for problems in selling 3-room flat after some yrs, can't answer you though I heard that one will not get a bank mortgage loan easily if the flat is too old. But this is for buyer, not seller. HDB loan should not be an issue. So far for 3NG, lift upgrade is the only concern cos they already come with store room, extra utility room for them is not necessary. Only 3I or 3S have extra utility room during upgrade. However, you will never know if Sgp govt wants to give something else to 3NG when they are due for upgrade.
  14. True true... Cos to many people, including me, our mathematic is pretty simple, HDB = ordinary people, condo = rich people, landed = very rich people
  15. Bro MaCe, pls help I cannot find this Kam Bong Yan at those incense shop I went to leh. They sell other brands but same shape same colour. Can I buy those brands? Or must I look for this brand call Kam Bong Yan? Another qtn is, which type of TV is more energy saving? Old fashioned bulky CRT TV or slim LCD TV? Was in Harvey Norman and saw some CRT TVs, 29” selling at $199 only. I don’t need HD ready, just wanna save my utility bill and go for a TV that eats least electricity will do. Thank you
  16. What is the total square feet of your windows? I ordered dimout roller blinds for my 2 bedrooms + living room, cost is $300. Blackout is more expensive, so based on my windows size, I think that your price of $360 is a good deal. I have altogether 10 panels of windows.
  17. Ever read from an article that this is a kind of mental illness, people just keep collecting unused/unwanted stuff and refuse to throw them away. She needs to see specialist lah.
  18. Unlikely it will grow back. The root of your hair has probably closed up due to the strong chemicals in your previous shampoo. Once hair drop, can't wind back the clock liao. Unless you see hair specialist. But by switching back to your safe shampoo, the speed of losing hair may slow down or even stop.
  19. Brother zirhk3355, cannot understand teochew leh, can translate into cantonese? Yah lor, how come our salary doesn't go up as fast as those ministers ah? Like that not fair leh
  20. Sorry, but I think Terrazzo is diff from broken marble. They are in fact 2 types of marble flooring, marble and broken marble. I don't know how they are formed but in the old days marble used to be very expensive, so broken marble is a cheaper option. Of course broken marble is not as grand looking and nicer colour as marble. My living hall is Terrazzo flooring. It was installed 30 years ago and still in pretty good condition. Cost is in the range of $10-$15 psf depending on the types of marble you choose. This is last year's figure. Bear in mind that marble is probably not so common now with large supply of granite in the market, you might have left with limited choices to choose from.
  21. My flat was also painted by the same guy as yours. I won't say I am very satisfied with him, but I didn't set high expectation on the painting job, unlike my kitchen cabinet. Yes, a bit of paint on the sockets, skirting lines also not neat etc, not very serious to me though I hope he could do better. I think most guys are just not as careful as women Also if one needs to run a few houses for painting, he probably has to do a quick n fast job Actually, he is still serious with his work, that's why I didn't complain to Patrick on this matter. One of my bedroom wall was in pretty bad condition due to water seepage from external surface, though I didn't notice the greyish background wall colour, he painted it 5 times! He missed out 1 coating on one section of my kitchen wall cos the tiler was doing my concrete support. After the final coating, I told him that piece of wall looked darker, not yellow enough compared with the rest. Although he did not see any difference, he painted it once more upon my request, no question no angry face. Unlike the tiler who felt that I was too fussy and trying to challenge his expertise You can ask Patrick to touch up if you are not happy with the paint job. I am sure he will try to do his best to make you happy. I used to disturb Patrick by saying that if I am not happy, I will deduct his "salary"
  22. No material is perfect, it depends what is important to you. For tiles top, very solid, need not worry abt heat, scratch & water but might chip/crack if chop too hard on it. I mean chopping food hor Also, grout lines hard to maintain unless you brush them everyday. Some might not like tiles support cos it is old style. For granite top, acidic liquid will stain it if leave overnite. For solid surface like corian, not heat resistant and some say prone to scratches too. As for the support material, either wood or concrete lor. I used concrete support with granite top for the whole of my stove, chopping & sink area. I cook everyday (dinner only for weekdays). I always buy chicken/pork bones from the wet market to make my soup, so I do chopping work every weekend. I have the habit to wipe the granite top of my chopping area with towel everytime I finish my cooking, so no worries on staining it overnite.
  23. I have laminates in bedrooms and tarrazzo in living. I didn't regret doing laminates for bedrooms as I really enjoy the cosy feeling the laminates give me when I am in my bedrooms. The comfortable and relax feeling from the laminates are what tiles can't give. My mind always cool down and gotten ready to sleep when I step into my bedroom Having animals or kids at home might not be suitable for laminates cos need to watch out on them reguarly. However, it depends on individual lah.
  24. Why drill hole? What my contractor did was, hack off the old bin, smoothen the wall/tiles with cement for damages made during hacking, fit in the new bin, apply silicon on the surrounding area between your new bin and the wall. This is provided that your new bin can fit into the hole nicely, else more work is needed. Eg. customised bricks or cements to fill up the gap. Any contractor can do the job but if you can’t find any, try to call Ho Bee @ 67885841. Tell Mrs Quek that you were introduced by a friend from Toa Payoh. I live in Blk 169 and they did the reno for my flat recently.
