Help needed for white patches/stains on wall
gumbokins replied to MikeKlaus32's topic in Home Maintenance & Repairs
Hey I had the same issue a couple of years back I wasn't convinced it was mould, i didn't see any mycelium and it definitely felt powdery. I believe is some kind of salt deposition... you could use a damp rag with some diluted bleach and wipe down the wall (test on a small area first for colour fastness). if its mould the bleach will kill it and the white patches will not return. -

Any EM owners care to share their laundry/clothes drying area? The current arrangement is the laundry is hung outside the MBR window (balcony area is sealed as extension to living room) but we plan on reinstating the balcony. I saw some wall mounted racks that would be feasible, and some of the neighbours use bamboo poles still.

Start to renovate before completion of sale
gumbokins replied to gumbokins's topic in Housing Rules, Policies and Procedures
Hi bipps, thanks for the reply. But is it a HDB requirement thing? if both buyer and seller are agreeable...it is still possible? -
Feeling a little cyberstalkish at the moment, the fittings from hansgrohe fit alright? No compatibility issues?

Hey guys, saw this on ST Forum yesterday: Home makeover ends in mouldy disaster Dec 11, 2010 Home makeover ends in mouldy disaster MY FAMILY repainted our house recently using Nippon Paint and we were utterly disappointed with the results. Three months after the painting, the walls in one of the rooms started developing white patches that looked like mould. Soon all the walls having the same colour had mouldy patches all over. We called Nippon Paint and they sent one of their salesmen down. After doing some tests, he concluded that the white patches were probably due to the cement (salt water soil) in HDB walls. As we were unconvinced by his explanation, he arranged another appointment for his technicians to come and do a more thorough check. After another round of checks, the conclusion was that all paints were like that and the reason we didn't notice was that the white patches were not visible against light colours. Furthermore, a sealer must always be used before painting the walls. If what he said was true, then why do they still sell dark colour paints? And if a sealer has to be used every time, why are such instructions not printed on the tins nor communicated to end-users? Tan Peng Lee -- I noticed the same problem on my MBR wall, painted moss green. I think we used Nippon paint too, but I don't think it's a Nippon paint problem? We managed to wipe the white stuff off with a wet rag, earlier my husband thought it was just dust from when they were building the sheltered walkway downstairs (we stay on a low floor). But now we're thinking that it's this cement-salt thing too (also known as efflorescence?). Funny thing is, only one of the walls is affected (the one that separates my unit from the common corridor). Anybody encounter the same problem?

Is It Possible To Stay In The House While The Reno Is Going On?
gumbokins replied to iamyun's topic in RENOVATION WORKS
My parents did their toilets and kitchen about 10 yrs back, when I was in poly. I had a huge pile of cement right outside my bedroom door. It was noisy, dusty, all sorts of inconvenience. It was awful! So one night I decided to stay overnight at my friend's house, to get away from it all, and my mother FORBADE IT SHE SCOLDED ME until like what and I believe she accused me of abandoning the family and how if they had to put up with it I had to blah blah blah blah blah. good. grief. When i bought my current place, there were tenants staying there. I already had legal ownership of the flat and needed to start my renovations quickly but the tenants were not happy with the prev owner (their landlord). Long drama ensued, but I had to put my foot down and tell them that they're going to start the works regardless of whether they all moved or not. At first they said OK OK, no problem, can renovate while they stay there but after 1-2 days they decided enough was enough. -
Small Insects In Rice
gumbokins replied to Deodar's topic in Moving House: Packing, Storing, Moving To Your New House
One small bag of rice can last me forever, so I actually store mine in the freezer haha. I read that you only need to do this for overnight with a sealed bag of rice, then store in a dry, airtight container but i tend to keep mine in the freezer long-term. Also read about the garlic thing..whole cloves, with skin on? -
Any Legal Actions Tat Can Be Taken?
gumbokins replied to jeffcraze's topic in HDB New/Resale Flats, Executive Condominiums
We've been receiving letters from COURTS also for the previous owners, owing them about 10K. I open and read...it's quite amusing to see how they 'threaten' to take legal action, then after that take soft approach, say can work out financial plan etc. My husband called them 2-3 times already, they even sent one young boy to check up on us, but they still keep insisting on sending the letters. So we're just going to ignore them lah. Of course, I have this irrational fear that I'm going to come home one day and find repo men at my unit taking my stuff but it shouldn't happen, right? Stay here 3 years already. -
it's gorgeous! luv the wall colour too...looking fwd to more of your projects

usually when a salesperson starts singing the praises of one and bashes another, it's very obvious who they are 'working' for liaoz... -

well i'm just going to tompang to share my good experience with them...coz it can't be all bad. my samsung LCD started acting weird a couple of weeks ago, and it was under already in the last yr of the 3 yr warranty. i was also dreading to call because i had a bad experience with them with my Samsung LCD monitors but to my surprise they picked up almost instantly, and a technician came down to my house on time 3 days later. (btw the problem with the tv was i was experiencing colour bleeding..dark parts of the image would have red streaks and sometimes the left side of the screen would be all weird. the guy took the back panel out, borrowed an eraser from me and rubbed the points clean with it. and it worked fine -_-) so i guess they don't have QC when it comes to their customer service..

well i think curtains are an essential part of the home, it makes it look like a home? maybe i'm biased, coz my mum used to sew curtains, so i've been surrounded by them from young, and everytime you draw a house, don't fget the curtains in the windows actually i think day curtains are the sheer ones you use during the day, perhaps to reduce glare. then you have the, urm, regular curtains, usually heavier, thicker, printed fabric. depending on your house, the amount of light, you can use either, not necc. to get both. my house is pretty dark, so we made do without the day curtains.

Baby Detected, What Next?
gumbokins replied to kensanctuary's topic in Pregnancy,Parenthood and Education Matters
when you have kids, money is never enough. firstly, during pregnancy, the cost really depends where you deliver and how often you go for check-ups. at KKH, subsidised, natural, i heard some ppl don't even have to fork out a single cent. i delivered at eastshore, C-sect, took my gynae's package and i think it cost almost $5k. then there are the jabs, the clothes, the necessities. jabs, if you take just the basic ones, can be done for free at polyclinic. otherwise can also take at PD or GP for a hefty premium ($50-100) and all the optional ones that can cost up to $300 for a complete curse (but can use Baby Bonus to pay). milk, best if breastfeed coz IT'S FREE but if cnot, formula can set you back about $100-150 a month. definitely i feel sourcing for second hand stuff for clothes, toys, cot, playpen, stroller is ideal but sometimes us first time parents, everything also want new new new. but babies outgrow everything so fast...even a cot is questionable because babies (and parents) need to be trained to actually use the cot. HTH.
