  1. I need a circular saw for a few random jobs. Nothing more than DIY. I was planning on spending lesser on a makita corded saw. However, a friend has suggested I spend slightly more and buy a bare cordless Dewalt saw and use my two 1.3Ah batteries from my drill. I don’t need a cordless saw, I’ll never be far from a plug socket. My drill doesn’t get a great deal of use (once a month maybe) so it would be good to get my monies worth from the batteries. That said when the batteries die that probably means a new drill and a new saw. A corded makita saw would probably last me a lifetime. Any other suggestions?

  3. We finished our rather major renovations few months back but just found time to share some pictures. We engaged an ID but in the end, he was doing mainly the wet works (hacking, cementing, marble, tiles, electrical, plumbing etc) and playing more the role of a project co-ordinator. We engaged specialist contractors directly for many parts of the works (cabinets, kitchen, wardrobe, glass works, painting, landscape, pond etc) with my better half doing a lot of the "interior designing" herself! The result is not too bad. Learnt quite a number of things which we can share. This will also serve as a record of our renovation journey. Please excuse me if my posts are not in chronological order, "terbalik" or all over the place. 4. Hi guys, Few years back i painted my bedroom wall a dark red color. Immediately white patches begin to show up. I tried wiping them off but it came back shortly after. I didn't use any primer for that paint job. Now i am sick and tired of these ugly wall and planning to paint them. After reading thru forums, i believe the root cause is the absence of the primer cause the water from the previous paint job to seep into the new paint. My question is, before I prime these walls, do I need to completely remove these white patches first, then prime them or just leave it as it is and paint over them? I am afraid I might make matters worst since i will have to wipe them with water, and prime them after would cause more disaster since the issues is water to begin with. Also I realize that place where my head always lean on the wall when I have hair oil(olive oil) seems to clean of the white patches really well. I thought maybe I should wipe my walls with light coat of olive oil and then start with my paint job (primer included this time). Do you think this would cause any problems? Next what primer do I use? Is water base primers that claim to be have amazing sealant power be sufficient? or is it a must to use oil- base primers? I read it's a huge hassle to use oil-primes, I really am leaning towards water-base primer because of this. I am looking at Benjamin Moore paints which are latex base-paints. Can I use a latex-base paint as a top-coat over a water-base under-coat? same goes for oil-base under-coats, is it advisable to use a latex-based top-coat? and have anyone tried using Benjamin Moore paints? which ones do u recommend for our normal HDB wall. You can see I am truly armature here, I hope anyone who is knowledgeable can shine some light on this. I have also attached the photo of my horrific wall.
  5. I decided to write about my "resale flat" reno (I lump under this category as flat is 16YO!) which cost us less than $10k for - 2 new bathrooms - 1 slightly remodelled kitchen, - 3 new cabinets - whole housepainting excl ceiling which was painted 4 years ago - plus miscellaneous like hacking and dismantling Hopefully, this will help homeowners on a budget save money, and I'm also hoping to do a good one for my contractors and to give credit to these good contractors, many of whom are not tech-savvy and do not know how to promote their biz! Good things must share right? ? first, to clarify, the reno is akin to that of a resale flat cos my 5-room is 15 1/2 years old. We stayed for 6 years, rented out for 9 years, then decided to move back. We have always DIY-ed our reno and this time is no exception. No doubt interior designers may give a more polished look but they charge a 33% premium, and I'd rather stretch my dollar to do more stuff! Of course, these disgusting toilets had to go first! The tenants have trashed them up so badly, they are worse than public toilets! Sorry if I spoilt your appetite for a meal! I nearly threw up when I came to inspect the premises!?
  6. Picture are usually exceptionally demandable couple of years because of several colors and designs. Women and men in many cases can give you a new look into the retaining wall strategy picture of assorted smoothness which often can’t be manageable having paint job. Assuming online surfers make use of https://www.mahonescommercialwallpaper.com/ site, they are pick up details of corporate office wallpaper.
  7. Anyone has experience/tips on doing a DIY feature wall? Just looking for something simple with textured wood or brick (I know this is harder) that is easy to DIY. If you got any suggestions on what tools i need/ways to do it, or places to get materials, please let me know as well. Thanks!
  8. I am wondering if any home owners here has been their own project coordinator. Though I would love to be my own builder, I can't possibly DIY from scratch as it is too time consuming and HDB does have rules and regulation on these and that. Now, i am doing my homework on what I need. It will be great help if anyone has some good trips or experiences to share.
  9. Hello all, First time posting and would like to share our journey on renovating a 4A resale flat from start, this is still an ongoing project and your contributions do matter! We have decided not to engage an ID firm as my missus herself already know what design/color/idea our flat is supposed to be. We will be engaging direct contractor for each leg of the construction. The flat: 4A flat, 105 SqM, squarish layout. We are going to hack a wall, combining 2 rooms into 1. Cement wash vinyl flooring, re-do all electrical points and wires, new A/C, new kitchen & bedroom carpentry, french door, barn door. The whole flat be very industrialized feel. Our carpentry will be a mix of custom and Ikea to lower cost, custom carpentry will be for bedroom and kitchen while shoe cabinets will be purchased from Ikea. Our process: hacking of wall > flooring & ceiling > electrical points > painting > air con > custom carpentry > Ikea carpentry > touch up paint > furnishing/furniture Currently we are on the lookout for quotation for hacking of the wall and painting of the whole flat.We would appreciate if there are any recommendation from flat owners. We are not in any rush so this is more like our project home and further more we don't want to rush anything. Thanks in advance and I'll keep updating our progress!
  10. Anyone has experience with building smart homes? I am planning to start my smart home journey with my new home. Hope to get some tips where to begin and how I can do it myself (DIY).
  11. Hi fellow DIY-ers, I have been doing home DIY projects for a few years, but am new to Singapore. I am used to working with pine back home however am not familiar with a lot of the timber types readily available in SG. I’m looking for cheap construction timber that can be used for wall frames and basic furniture (shelves, desks and tables). Can anyone please provide any recommendations on what carpenters/hobbyists in SG would typically use? I emailed one supplier, who suggest Nyatoh, but from everything I’ve read this is more expensive than I’d like. I am looking for real timber and not plywood. Looking for typical standard sizes (1x4, 2x4, 4x4) and lengths of around 2.4m. Thanks!

    Wall Painting

Hello everyone, recently I decided to show creativity. Last time I did not draw for a long time and I decided to paint my wall. And so, how it works - requires a well-plastered wall covered with paint for interior walls. No wallpaper. If you only do repairs, but in the future plan to paint the wall by hand I advise you to apply paint on the wall with a spray gun - they look something like this - https://www.bestadvisers.co.uk/paint-sprayers, or a roller. With this method of application, the wall will be as flat as possible which will greatly simplify your work. Step one (when it is taken into account that the wall is suitable for painting) - select the final image. Draw yourself using the pencil, or just find the picture you like on the Internet. I drew myself, for example. Step two - focusing on the sketch of our future art, apply a neatly simple pencil outline on the wall. Do not worry, it is easily erased by an eraser. Step three - buy and prepare tubes with paint. (yes, yes, you can first apply a contour, see if you like it, erase it if you do not like it and apply the outline of a new image, and then go ahead and choose the paint.) It's quite simple, squeeze out the little of paint you need at the moment on a pallet and from it accurately put in a contour. The process itself is very similar to children's albums for decoration, only a bit larger. If there are no pallets - do not worry, take a few lids - one lid - one color paint. Step four - after you have applied all the necessary colors, inspect the work from a distance, maybe there's something you want to add (I added the falling petals so much) Step Five - Admire yourself!)
  13. One of my tiles, the grout came off. Is there a place I can buy toilet grout off the shelf for a small quantity? Is it available in any hardware? Need help. I don't Want to call a tiler for this since I am able do it. Appreciate Any help I can get from here. Thank you so much.
  14. This is my 2nd reno-t blog in renotalk. Well, I guess I might be one of the oldest member in this forum, I was already a member over a decade ago. That time I was busy with my HDB 5 room renovation and this forum has helped me tremendously during my renovation journey. However this time, it is slightly different; I will be helping out my mum's condo renovation. Although the scope of renovation work is smaller, I foresee there will be other challenges waiting for me.
  15. Hi All, I have updated my HDB checklist. Thought it might be useful to you too. http://allthingscozyandhomely.blogspot.sg/2014/10/hdb-defect-checking-revisited.html
  16. Hi everyone! My hubby and I are so excited to share with you the journey of our renovation. It may be different from the usual space planning and decorative styles, but who knows if some of these quirky ideas could be useful for you Our home is about showing personalities and being ourselves. We want beach resort feeling with outdoors sittings and palm tree, yet modern and comfortable living room and kitchen. Pretty tough to combine both in a 900sqf HDB ya? Not to mention that our flat is an old model, more than 40 years old. Yes, you heard it right, 43 years old to be exact!! As you guys all know, the pros of an old HDB flat is squarish and relatively good size. The cons is, in our case, the two tiny toilets in the common area – one for WC and one for shower. I’m not sure if you have seen such configuration before. I remember coming across only a handful of threads here with a similar toilet arrangement. Here you go, this is our original floor plan:
  17. Hello, fellows! Today we want to tell you something about Water Bubble Panels. In order to get some new customers IMPORTANT! We sell not only Water Bubble Panels, but an e-book with all the instructions about creating them! I bet that not every one of you know what kind of thing Water Bubble Panel is. To put it simple, Water Bubble Panel is a flat aquarium without fish inside. But it has some air bubbles. Streams of illuminated bubbles rise effortlessly through water-filled chambers with the use of a quiet air pump hidden in the lower part of the design. And that's it! Very simple, huh? There are several types of this features: 1. Built-in type 2. Enclosed type Do you know how does this feature functioning? Well, everything is simple again Each design has a bubble aerator and an air pump in the lower part. When air pump is switched on, air goes through hoses to the bubble generator and a process of aeration starts. Bubbles begin to rise from the bottom to the upper part of the design and LED lights create a magical effect which attracts attention and calms a nervous system. Need to mention that high quality Water Bubble Panels are made not of pane or generall glass, but from acrylic glass (plexiglass). If you'll make a panel of glass, in a few weeks it will crack... We attached some photos of assembling process. As you can see, everything is very simple and you can easily make it by yourown! IMPORTANT! We sell not only Water Bubble Panels, but an e-book with all the instructions about creating them! ---- We work in the aqua design sphere more than 7 years, and we have an e-book in which we give people instructions about manufacturing process and all the other stuff connected with Water Bubble Panels. So, do you wonder how it is possible to make a Water Bubble Panel? Visit our website: bubble-wall.com Contact us by e-mail: aquamodaa@gmail.com

  23. I want to remove these wall hooks that are mounted into the wall using metal pins. I've tried to remove one of them by melting the plastic using a lighter and pulling out the pins using a hammer and pliers, but the pins broke and got stuck to the wall. How do I remove these stuck pins? Any help is appreciated.
  24. Now I have a wallet that will (hopefully) be impossible to lose! Not to mention, be a subtle *ahem* reminder for people to remember my name. I decided to take one more day to hunt down the metal letters, and was beyond stoked to find some I loved at the hardware store. Seriously so excited to pull out this wallet! BTW the hardware is not heavy at all, so don’t worry about weighing down your already uber heavy bag. Steps after the break! Source: http://bit.ly/1yXMpMZ *Removed ad*
  25. You have a super boring door? Well, let's try this DIY to top up your door to another level. For this DIY, the main thing you need a whole lotta patience. We used electricians tape for the straight lines, measuring and marking to get the even spacing. The triangles and circle were made by using a shape punch on black contact paper, and the yellow edge was created with duct tape. Finally we sprayed frosted spray paint over vinyl letters spelling “HELLO!” and then peeled off the stickers. Tip: make sure you do not stretch the electrical tape because it will recoil. Alright all, have fun! Source: http://bit.ly/1yXMpMZ *Removed ad*
